Once a transaction has 6 confirmations, it is extremely unlikely that an attacker without at least 50% of the network's computation power would be able to reverse it.

As I've stated in many of my posts, I have not used the website myself (nor associated with them), but they have plenty of good reviews as you can see on the link given above. I see no reason to mistrust them, especially that they have been operating since 2013 with no scam accusations (at least, I haven't come across anything serious). Here is the announcement thread as well[1] If you want to read some extra reviews.

There are many stories of password recovery safely done by this service[1] [2]. Dave appears to be an expert on how to brute-forcing password algorithms.
You need to give him enough information to recovery the password.
Note if you have enough knowledge and a powerful computer you can do it yourself.

Thanks, guys for the references. I only saw one post of Mr omega star scream where he suggested this. Thanks for clarifying that you have always suggested them. I just did not happen to know the history. I also don't know this Dave person. But I might speak to him for a case for a friend of a friend of mine. Or just recommend him directly.
If anyone know a cheaper service, but reliable, also let me know.

Also, AFAIK there are ways of letting him try to brute force your wallet without actually handling it to him. So, he finds the password but only you have the wallet file, so he can't scam you even if he wanted to.

How is that possible since I am sure he would not waste his resources trying to brute force an empty wallet. If he did, I would gladly pay him 20% of the empty wallet hehehe just kidding. But yes, maybe he would agree to a try out of breaking into a wallet which is empty just to prove that he can help.

Why would he proceed on cracking an empty wallet since he knows that he wont benefit on bruteforcing that wallet? Anything can be seen so in short where this kind of question is nonsense. When it comes to wallet retrieval or bruteforcing then this site is mainly being suggested which means this one is trustable enough compared into other wallet recovery services. 20% might sounds too high but majority wont care out as long they will able to re-access those funds inside. So its just right for them to get some part out of their service rather than losing those coins  forever. Probability will always vary on how hard you password is that had been forgotten.

And anyone can say they have a wallet with 500 BTC, encrypt a random wallet and give it to him. How is that different from only giving the wallet hash? And why would anyone do this?

I don’t get your point. He isn’t even sure if he will be able to get the password, so obviously there are cases where he just waste his time and electricity trying to brute-force a wallet.

The point is. I have to agree to give him 20% of something. That something is what I claim is inside my wallet. What if I claim there is $1million in it and 20% paid to him. When he opens the wallet. IF he opens the wallet, he could sue me. Because he put in effort wasting his time. Legally I would be bound to give him the money. THAT is the problem. In any case, this is a problem that a friend of a friend of mine. I just needed to know if this guy was good. I have already forwarded the information.

I will tell you all later if they agreed to hire him. They will probably speak to him directly. I have 0 involvement.

I did not understand the reason for your fear, but I think it is either for fees or trust:
fees: you will get 80% of the value of your wallet balance without risking losing money in an attempt to Brute forcing your password. "This value may increase with forks"
Trust: I think they've explained how to do it with the disclosure of gossip information[1], or instead of giving the entire wallet data to a third party, I suggest you use ---->https://github.com/gurnec/btcrecover/blob/master/docs/Extract_Scripts.md  (test password without having full access)

Six years in service and no scam report and many testimonials, this is a sign that the service is legit, we need this kind of service, people lose their passwords and seeds, people sometimes become careless, I'm glad we have something like this I'll add this to my bookmark, because I might need this or those people I know might lose their passwords and this is a service that worth recommending.
