so in short
just think about the costs of running and operating.

This is also what I thought.  I have seen several people in my country (Philippines) scavenging for copper, and I see their troubles in removing those wire covers and effort in gathering these scraps.  For those who have the money, they would choose Bitcoin mining because it is more convenient to them.  They just need to setup, plug and configure and its done.  While scavenging for copper requires a lot of physical activities and it offer less profit.  sadly our government is not focused in this kind of eco friendly activity so people who are doing this kind of stuff have less support.

@lionheart78,

"....I see their troubles in removing those wire covers and effort in gathering these scraps...." Yes, removing the external cover could be challenging and time consuming if, you are new to this kind of task. However, the quickest way to do this is through the aid aid of tool's. You can get this tool for less than $25 on ebay

*Atleast, this will help fasten the process and save much of you time because you can same tool whenever, you want to directly separate the copper with the external cover.

Note : it's not encouraging if, the govt. of your country does not have such programme to compesate the dealer's. This will discourage most of the local buyer's and  the price of the could be very low.

There are already many junk shops that recycles or reuse Copper in order to be utilize again, also, there are enough copper in the market as the demand for it is not that high due to the fact that there's a plenty of it and it is not that hard to get. In my opinion, mining bitcoin should first be finished till all volume will be in the market, in this case, we support the cryptocurrency and help its market price to increase.

How much is it worth? Is it worth holding? Doesn't it just take up a bunch of space?

It depends on how much you have got. I doubt if I have got more than £5,000 worth, so it isn't a problem, and it is part of my asset diversification programme.  You can reduce the storage requirement by flattening copper pipe, and "top and tailing" copper cylinders so that you can flatten and store the sides. Stripping copper wire is a simple and mindless task, and you can do it whilst you watch Bitcoin videos on YouTube. There is a slight downside - if you strip copper wire, then you end up with bright wire, and this is probably the most valuable category for scrap copper. Unfortunately if you store it, then it dulls and drops a category, and this is slightly less valuable.

Stealing copper that is part of the infrastructure creates massive costs for the community, and you should do everything you can to reduce it, and to ensure that any thieves are caught.

I meant how much is it per kg or ibs or whatever, but I googled it. Wow 5k is a lot. You would need 100s of kg for that Asset diversification is very important. Good on you. How much weight worth do you have? Where do you get all the materials to strip in the first place? I can imagine stripping things down to be incredibly redundant indeed. Or while you watch cartoons lol xP

I didn't know the copper could go down a grade like that. Pretty interesting. It would be nice to get crypto involved with this somehow.

in my opinion it is not efficient to make copper as physical bitcoin, because copper is not very valuable, to make physical bitcoin has to be something very valuable like gold, because gold has a high enough value commensurate with the price of bitcoin.

It's a good idea
Here in my country there are thousands of people who lives only managing "garbage" like copper for example, and it's a win-win situation because they can gain their money and reduce the garbage put on our soil

Continue this work man, you can exchange the money for BTC

That is a very interesting idea and concept. I love when you can make money while also doing good things for the society and our planet. Was wondering if you can provide me with some kind of tutorials so I can learn how to separate copper from electronic devices as well? Sounds like fun if you are more technology oriented as I am.

If the profit is worth the time I would definitely transform this endeavour in a hobby for me and maybe create an organisation and get more people involved in this.

Picking up electrical garbage and scraping it, is something that homeless people do.
If you arguments about the high demand of Copper would be true then it would make sense to buy copper financial insturments like digital copper,no?

I've been HODLing copper for a few years, and I've even posted about it on Bitcoin Talk.I also save lead. It isn't as valuable, but the weight/volume ratio is good. It's called urban mining, and I've got some tips for separating copper/aluminium radiators and a few other things as well.

I've also got a few dustbins full of old circuit boards and hard drives, and I keep meaning to huntfor Bitcoin wallets on the hard drives.

Does it mean you have a shed full of scrap? Your wife must hate you Cheesy

Dismantling electronics is popular among the poor people especially in India but is also very unhealthy if you're heating the boards to take out smaller parts. Many people develop lung problems from it.

I know a guy who is driving around town collecting metal and electronics, dismantling them for recycling and selling. It's not a well paid job. More of a minimum wage type of thing.

In your case it may be easy to acquire copper but in cases of others it is very hard to do. First thing is that you must have access to some disposed electrical gadgets to extract copper but it is not always available in many areas. That is why even if bitcoin mining is difficult for us but it is more profitable for others to mine bitcoin rather than to mine copper. The thing is use the resources around you together with your skills and as long as you can gain profit from it then it is the best for you. For me it is not mining copper nor bitcoin mining which is profitable it is signature campaign and trading.

You don't need an entire shed for this.
He said he has about 5k £ so that will be roughly 1.5 or 2 tonnes.
It might sound as much but the density of copper is still high at around 9 tonnes per cubic meter, so all he needs, if he turns them into lingots, would be a space of 1x1 meters and 20 cm depth. Even considering scrap storage it will still fit in your basic storage closet.

in my opinion it is not efficient to make copper as physical bitcoin, because copper is not very valuable, to make physical bitcoin has to be something very valuable like gold, because gold has a high enough value commensurate with the price of bitcoin.

In my opinion, you should read the topic three times to make sure what's about before posting non-sense.

There are already many junk shops that recycles or reuse Copper in order to be utilize again, also, there are enough copper in the market as the demand for it is not that high due to the fact that there's a plenty of it and it is not that hard to get.

Actually there is demand otherwise we would see the prices plummet and be in the range of other metals, even aluminum is 3 times cheaper.

@mazdafunsun

"....homeless people do....."   homeless people do it most of the time because most elegant people  find this humiliating.

I guess, you don't want to face the humiliation of what your neighbour or girlfriends will say if, they sight you picking unwanted stuff from the garbage!

what about if, you have to pay half of your bill's or rent with the money realize from this source!
Will your neighbour or girlfriend see this as crime to the society? i guess not!

Well, i have seen people living full time reselling most of the crap's as you might called it on ebay or better dismountly them and transforming a part of this component into a more useful device. Our society need smart people who think in this direction.

In conclusion, i think the present generation are the SUPER-consumer of all time. And, this attitude is destroying our planet gradually.

However, there are few of us who are prudent enough, it's not because we lack something here but, it's because of our passion/creativity. We pick, recycle/dismantle, transform old stuff into a useful device.

Year back i taught most people  who go around hunting for unwanted stuff in garbage are metally retarded people but, now i know better and below is my redifinition for this kind of task.

UNWANTED STUFF + IN GARBAGE =  FREE MONEY  (this is not a crime) Shocked

NOTE : presently, i'm building alcool based heater & cooker that is worth $200 on amazon/ebay. thanks to most of the metal realized from most of these unwanted stuff.. Foto will be posted  soon within the discussion board.

Thanks for your comment

In your case it may be easy to acquire copper but in cases of others it is very hard to do. First thing is that you must have access to some disposed electrical gadgets to extract copper but it is not always available in many areas. That is why even if bitcoin mining is difficult for us but it is more profitable for others to mine bitcoin rather than to mine copper. The thing is use the resources around you together with your skills and as long as you can gain profit from it then it is the best for you. For me it is not mining copper nor bitcoin mining which is profitable it is signature campaign and trading.
Yes and another thing is even the knowledge of this, and if not because the op have something written on it, I would not have even known that much that they can also mine copper this way, but for me, I think that bitcoin may still be more profitable for me if not because of the cost of mining that is usually always the problem of bitcoin mining, and most especially the cost of electricity which the last time that I tried mining, I had to dump my rig when I saw the amount of money I was paying for electricity and that was the time that mining was not even profitable, but now that bitcoin is fully getting to recover again, I think that I can go to my rig room again and start the mining process allover which should give me profit to pay for electricity.

@darewaller,

"...I would not have even known that much that they can also mine copper this way, but for me, I think that bitcoin may still be more profitable for me if not because of the cost of mining"

Thanks for your comment. Yes, it's possible. You can start-up by mining copper in order to generate some cash which you can invest into your btc mining project(for purchase of the necessary equipment). all that is required when mining copper is sacrifice, see this a hobby (fun) in order to avoid getting bore with the task. I sugegst you only do this at your leisure hour.

*Note to member's who has been following this thread, I'm sorry for my absence within this period. I have a lot of task on desk and it's has been rainy cat & dog over here in rome which is very bad when it comes to mining copper . I hope to post some useful guide of how i'm doing this for the benefit of those who might be interested.

@Mandoy,

".......signature campaign and trading."

You are right!! signature campaign & trading. Trading,Nobody like to engage his or her time on something which is difficult to trade or sell out at the right time. But, don't forget that back in 2003 nobody believe that bitcoin will gain such popularity to the point that both those in govt house,media ... started talking about it.

Somehow, i think some group of people ( who saw the vision & the benefit of what bitcoin will become in future )kept the ball rolling back in 2003. Today they've passed the ball onto us.

Same applies to every other precious material's around us. inotherwords, the value of a thing is determine by the interest & curiosity of the masses. such curiosity leads to interest.

When it comes to mining copper, i've done series of research and found out the need. The problem is that a major part of the local seller's who are invole in selling & buying of copper donot handle the biz in such a way that it will give room for a further growth within the market.

So, i think a team of people who can create such curiosity is needed. And, this can be accomplish through the use of a virtual currency such as bitcoin.

Just immagine for a second what will happen within the bitcoin & copper circle if, 30% of the existing seller's start's paying their local customer's in btc in exchange for their copper!

Thanks
