PSU directly close to miner?

Hello miners,

is it ok put the power supply very close to the miner? In newer models from Bitmain for example they always do it like that, but not in older models, why? I read somewhere that it is also harmful to place the PSU very close to the miner, so why is Bitmain doing it right now?

I've never had an issue with it. My 741's are 2 to a PSU and it rests on top of them. I think the biggest co cern would be if you don't have adequate airflow or cooling you risk tripping a thermal switch in the PSU. I always hated it more that older PSU'S usually forced you by design to pull warm air from the miner exhaust and vent their exhaust to the miner intake.

It is fine to put the PSU near to the miner it only creates more heat (means high temp) compared to separated one.

I don't think it is harmful, some vlogger from youtube they both put the s9 miner and PSU on the same box(silencer) they don't have any problem running the s9 miner even the PSU is close to the miner they just make sure the air comes on the front are cooler to get the miner temp low.

I don't know what is the reason why Bitmain combine both miner and PSU to newer miners but for me, it is fine and it is easy to handle compared to separated one and I think that PSU is cooler than the old one. Look at the power supply of s17 it has 3 fans and the fan spinning much stronger than the PSUs from old miner.

I'm pretty sure it's due to the efficiency you gain from a direct connection as opposed to using 6-pin connectors. They are also able to fine tune and tweak the miner performance based on a standard and known power supply. I don't think it's any cooler these current gen miners and their built in PSU'S draw a lot of power and require the additional fans simply based on design size

BM, Canaan, Inno, and MicroBT (Whatsminer) all do it for the same reasons:

1. Increased efficiency by losing the hash board Vcore regulators and using the PSU itself to set and regulate voltage to the chips. That in itself helps eff by several %. Yes losing the PCIe connections & wires and instead using solid bolted-in-place bus bars also helps but assuming you have proper sized wires and connectors are in good shape there should be little loss from those.

2. Allows for higher chip string voltage allowing for more chips per-string which in turn divides up the voltage across each chip more evenly giving a bit more headroom for what voltage each wants to run at. Most of the built-in PSU's can provide 15-20vdc to the hash boards with the final applied voltage determined by the auto-tuning process.

3. Uses a PSU with known characteristics vs whatever bargain basement/unknown PSU a user decides to try using.
