In order to make the forum a more comfortable place for all of us, there are some very annoying things that everyone should avoid and some are even regulated by the rules of the forum. The vast majority of users, unfortunately, do not adhere to them, because they do not know the rules or simply do not care about anyone and nothing except themselves and their earnings from bounty/signature campaigns.

So let's see what anyone can do to make the forum a better place :

1. Quoting posts some use literally for each of their posts, and it's completely unnecessary and makes your posts pretty repulsive to most members. Sometimes it's enough to quote only part of the post (just edit it), or to use ~snip~ option (quote -> delete content - > insert ~snip~) so that users you quote knows that the reply is intended for him.

Here is example of one user who is using excessively quoting in almost all of his posts, doesn't look like anything you want to read, does it?

2. Promoting your links in a way that you post them in every post is not only against the rules, but it will also eventually lead to someone report you, and your account can be banned. Instead, advertise your service/page in the appropriate section of the forum, or in your signature/avatar/personal text.

Here we have a classic example of a user advertising his site on an inappropriate/against rule way, and why he probably got a temporary ban.

3. Necroposting (bumping old thread/s) is something we should totally avoid, even if we are interested in a similar topic it is advisable to open a new thread, where it will be much easier to have a discussion.

4. In order to combat spam try to open self-moderated threads (you can delete any message in such thread), and lock threads after receiving the answers you need, or lock threads after the discussion is over, and most posters start repeat previous posts.

5. Help moderators/admins to keep this forum better place for all by using "Report to moderator" button - and everything you can report is in the Forum Rules

The forum strives to allow free discussion of any ideas. All policies are built around this principle. This doesn't mean you can post garbage, though: posts should actually contain ideas, and these ideas should be argued reasonably.

5. Help moderators/admins to keep this forum better place for all by using "Report to moderator" button - and everything you can report is in the Forum Rules

You can just quote a part from the post like i have done now to answer or share your opinion and you dont need to quote the whole post !

I hit the " Report to Moderator Button " nearly every day in the last 1 and a half Years (maybe 2 dont know exactly) .

A lot of Users doing this already more and more now and its realy nice to see that growing.

Self moderated threads is a feature that really should be encouraged in our midst(though not by compulsion as some other users have suggested in the past), I do not think it should be a problem doing the job of a moderator on your thread, keeping it clean in the process and grooming valuable replies, for example, this very thread is self moderated, if I didn't have anything whatsoever to say in this thread, I wouldn't post here because it would be removed by the OP.

I think why some users do not use this option is that they run away and never come back to the thread after its made(to them the thread has accomplished it's intended purpose already) or they intentionally made the thread to open the flow of shitposts, so why moderate it.

Also you can add this

6) Avoid increasing the font size which is quite annoying to read that thread IMHO,it only needed in the rare case when in need of highlighting multiple title in a single reply but using the increased font size for a normal small OP is completely unnecessary.

You are right this is a common mistake we should avoid redundancy, there are plenty of duplicate threads now here in the forum. Everyone is posting new thread without having to use the search button to find similar topics that already exist.

I believe some new members may find those rules/recommendations annoying, specially engaged in signature campaigns.

However, if you play by the rules you will build a much better reputation in the forum. Additionally, if you don't follow those rules/recommendations you may also get banned (temporary or permanently).

The most important thing your account has is its reputation.

Probably many of the spammers use the Quote feature not just to reply for the particular post, but rather to make their posts look lengthy. This has been a repetitive practice and can never be reduced either through reports or actually educating them. Posters in Gambling Discussion and Altcoin Discussion use this very often to make their post look meaningful and constructive. I do quote posts rarely, but only quote a certain part of the whole post which I should give a reply to.

I believe SMF new versions have made the quoting feature a little more readable, but these older versions which bitcointalk uses are way really bad and at times doesn't look exactly like quoting a post. I have seen in some self built forums where if the quote exceeds certain lines, the content would automatically get snipped to look like the quote is short. This can be a better idea which theymos can use in Epochtalk in future implementations.

Regarding [6] I have been spamming the report section on some particular section (something like my Local board and sometimes in Bitcoin Discussion) where there would be far less reporters to report spams. While the latter is far from being drained with spams, my local board doesn't have a moderator and it has become a day-to-day activity for me to check and report posts very often there.

I'll have to disagree on this one, it's one thing if someone is just looking for an excuse to post to rack their post count for that weekly signature payment, and it's another if someone has something on-topic and relevant to say, sometimes just revisiting an old(er) conversation.

I think there is nothing wrong in bumping a useful thread instead of creating a new thread. If we create a new thread, then it becomes confusion and again the users come and discuss the same thing in the new thread which is already discussed on old thread. Bumping should be limited only to useful threads(The threads which should be useful for all the newbies on the forum).

It's always easier to work around the rules than to act on them, but that's not an excuse for the rest of us who care about how things work in this forum. While I do not expect my recommendations to bring about a major change, I hope at least one small portion of users will change their behavior.

The most important thing your account has is its reputation.

I fully agree with this statement, but it only applies to those who have some standards in life, others just looking for a way to make money, reputation is not a priority for them.

Probably many of the spammers use the Quote feature not just to reply for the particular post, but rather to make their posts look lengthy.

This is probably one of the reasons, but they should be warned that in this way of posting, in fact, they do more harm than good to themselves and others. Unfortunately, some habits are deeply rooted and difficult to change, so if there is not too much hope for today's forum users, I think that future users need to learn some things before they go the wrong way.

I personally don't see how useful it is to bump a 3 or 5 year old thread if this is not an exceptional case. I think most do this for completely different reasons, and we all know what exactly motivates them. I recently reported a few such threads where users of a particular signature campaign looking for an excuse to continue with spam posting with completely meaningless posts in relation to the topic.

All posts that completely ignored OP and other rules of forum have been removed.
