Really, everyone could have guessed this legislation would be in the pipe a decade ago.

Half the internet is campaigning against this, including Google and Facebook.

EFF has some pretty good links on their website.

https://www.eff.org/

There is literally only one witness appearing in opposition to the bill - a Google lawyer.

All I can say is that this is Bitcoin. I don't believe it until I see six confirmations.

**AA's have been playing the lobbying game since at least, like, when cassette tapes were around. They know how to stack this in their favor.

Fortunately even if it does go through, the opposition is much more likely to be heard in the eventual Supreme Court hearings

One thing that surprised me was that The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) came out in favour of the proposed Stop Online Piracy Act.

I sent them a note through their website explaining:
  • The proposed legislation would push Internet based jobs out of the country
  • That the Internet routes around censorship
  • That research and development in annoymizing software would move out of the country, much like the development of cryptographic software moved out of the country in the late 90's due to strong cryptography restrictions.
  • It would lead to the balkanization of the Internet with oppressive states like the United States and China, as well as darknets (running namecoin) would each have their own DNS "Islands."
  • Legislation implementing the 1996 WIPO "Copyright" and "Performances and Phonographs" treaties (such as the DMCA) will lead to the phase-out of the "general-purpose computer" (started with Vista, may be completed with Windows 8 ). The loss of cheap computing will further stagnate the manufacturing sector. Worker productivity will drop as formerly automated tasks are again done without the aid of a computer.

America is being left for China. All big business is moving over there in face of pending financial instability. China is the most sovereign and populous country on the planet. The support is there especially with its manufacturing clout and hardy workforce that has an affordable cost-of-living. America will remain to be an unsustainable empire while China continues to look towards a new dawn.
