Enabling quotes in locked topics

Right now, it’s not possible to quote a post from a locked topic because we can’t reply. Quoting from locked topics could be useful sometimes to refer to a normal quote like it’s possible for every unlocked topic. I know, it’s also a solution to just quote the text and add a link manually but that wouldn’t include the date of the quoted post and need more time to type the author, especially for multiple quotes.

That problem doesn’t include only historical posts but also some recent ones like the 10-year contest from theymos where I tried to refer to in our local section while quoting it.




So, my suggestion is:

Enable quotes from locked topics and display a message that the topic is locked; people can only copy the text to use it as a normal quote but can’t submit a new reply:




Is it possible to implement? It’s not super important (like the new forum software) but would be nice in my opinion.

I am in favor of enabling quotes in locked topics. But you can use epochconverter for adding the time of quoted post.
Enter the exact time the post was created and click on "Human date to Timestamp" button. Then Epoch timestamp will be shown.

Yeah, there is some alternative methods to quote from locked topics, but I think that they require too much hassle. Simple solution would be really needed. Because we often need to quote from locked topics, especially when we are talking about historic topics. Personally when I need to do it, I just copy text, insert it into quote tag and add link to original post above or under quote. For me it's simpliest way to quote from locked topic.

This was also my problem yesterday. Simply copying the text from the post in a lock topic will not copy its format in bbcode.

This is very time consuming especially when you are making or posting very important notice in a thread or just lazy to edit the entire text with same format of the quoted post.

There is a fairly easy workaround for that. Hit the "quote" button on any post, e.g. a post in the thread that you're posting in. Replace post ID in the URL (find quote=MMM and replace the MMM) with the ID of the post you want to quote from the locked thread. You'll get the bbcode. To complete the quote you'll also need to replace the whole link (topic=TTT.msgMMM#msgMMM) in the quote tag. Author and timestamp are good.

A bit of a hassle but worked fine the few times that I needed it and I wouldn't want to postpone the new forum software by 3 more years while the OP's suggestion gets implemented here

This happens to me a few times also and would be realy nice to get this option.
But i guess we will not get it , as i remember there was already some kind of thread of that suggestion for it and its a long time ago.

Sometimes, I feel inconvenient with locked topics because I can not fully quote posts inside.
Sometimes, I think the disable of quote button in locked topics make sense. It help to reduce drama. People tend to more lazily to spend time to self-compose quotes from locked topics.

Does anyone know how to do an image quote? Or at least find out the "https://i.imgur.com/" link to the pictures, I get a URL that starts with https://ip.bitcointalk.org/ when I click on "copy image address."
Can this be done using userscripts?

I did it 2 or 3 days ago, and I discovered that method has its disadvantages:
For example, you want to quote posts of poster A:
(1) If poster A deletes that post, then the image link you get will be invalid.
(2) If poster A changes avatar to new one, then the image link you get to image of previous avatar will be invalid. In fact, it will be changed to the current one.

(2) In that topic, in early versions of OP, I was lazy and use direct links to avatars of users who made or worn those avatars. Then, I saw avatars in my OP changed, and I found out reasons. After that, I had to download their avatars, and uploaded to imgur, then posted imgur links to OP.

Anyways what I normally do is just use the link of that post and somehow give a gist of what I want to quote in there. Just by clicking on the #49321059 on the post and pasting it as a reference. This is when I quote in bitcointalk.

For other articles, I just put the author with the link, maybe you could use this too. Using the link coming from #59152874915 and posting that

Nice tools, I wasn't aware about their existence. That should solve the problem for long and specially formatted topics. However, the procedure is still quite complicated and I guess most users don't know about it (including myself)

Same here, I'm copying the text (unformatted) and post a link to the original post in the locked topic. It's working but I like normal (real) quotes much more...

Yeah... the imgur link is actually embedded in the ip.bitcointalk.org URLs...

So that's how it is, sometimes really I experience this one especially if the thread is locked and can't be quoted and just open a new tab or copy the image address of it but still goes through decoding that link and I didn't know what they mean, really helpful HCP.

Yeah, it's a hassle especially if you don't know to manually add the needed text to make it like the original quoted message, what I really do is really manual and the most hassle part is adding the date so I reach for help in this website http://www.onlineconversion.com/unix_time.htm it is same as epochconverter.[/quote]

A simple workaround would be just copying and pasting the contents inside the quote=author tags

While it might be a nice feature to add, there's a reason why the topic stays lock and hence, quotes/ replies are not allowed

It just takes several extra seconds. A little bit of a hassle but not much of a big deal.

This doesn't include the username of the poster, the link to the quoted post and the time that post has been created.
You should use the following code instead.

I still think this should be implemented in the forum.
The problem I face today is posting some connected accounts and all the proof is in locked topics. Editing manually all those quoted posts is just waste of time.

I know exactly that feeling, I got headache too many times when quoting post and then c/p author then numbers...oh, then archive everything because posts tend to disappear. When I am too lazy to do all this, I just quote post and c/p link under quotation.

Now, the only thing we can do is waiting for his response. Let hope that some suggestions above can trigger the expected decision.
