From what I've understood, Ethereum won't be a currency as such. however still buyable but not yet released.

Good question romeodamian, I recently heard about this ethereum and I read it was a threat to bitcion.  I've no clue what it is so thanks for bringing the matter to my attention and starting a discussion.  I'll follow this thread and see what others think.

Ethereum does not directly replace bitcoin. They are designed for two different things. Ethereum is designed to execute contracts. Bitcoin is a component of a contract. It is possible that Ethereum could be so popular that ether might be used more than bitcoins for payments.

Maybe not a threat to Bitcoin however this 'ethereum' project stays enjoyable.

I personally didn't think it would really wipe out BTC in any form of fashion honestly.  I just wanted to get a convo going here as this topic is very new to me and I don't have all the time i'd like to dive into the forum and dig out info.

ethereum will complement bitcoin.

the question you should be asking is:  ripple vs. ethereum, who will rule?

more about ripple here:  https://xrptalk.org/forum/61-faq-and-guides/ and here:  http://coinjoint.info/ripple-might-want-pay-attention/

Ethereum is closer to Open Transactions in concept than to Bitcoin.  Bitcoin is a currency and speculative commodity, whereas Ethereum is a platform that allows you to design digital financial products encoded in a blockchain - futures contracts, bonds, that sort of thing.  It is a cool idea and they have a slick website and a super smart team...but I'm also rooting for Open Transactions, its a little more in line with the principles of Bitcoin IMHO.
