Bought a nano ledger s about 2 years ago.  Previously kept btc in electrum and when i got nano ledger s, i sent btc to nano ledger.  I do not send btc that much and basically hold most of the time.  So whenever i need to send or receive btc, i connect it to my laptop via usb port to send/receive.  Actually not my laptop usb port but like that thing that has multiple ports since i have only few usb ports in my laptop.  I have not connected my nano ledger s to my laptop i almost 2.5 months and just connected it to my laptop again.  What i noticed was... the letters/words on the nano ledger s looks extremely dim... like its running out of battery.

Whenever i used my nano ledger s, i rarely have it connected to the usb port on my laptop if i no longer use it.  I basically just unplug it and put it in my fanny pack so to speak.

I just checked nano ledger site and apparently the battery last up to 5 years.  Is that accurate?  It says

If you intend to store your Ledger Nano X for longer periods, the battery lifespan is best preserved by charging fully once every few months. Once fully charged, turn off the device and store it in a cool, moisture-free place.

It's best not store your Ledger Nano X for a prolonged period on a very low charge, since this may negatively affect battery capacity.

I rarely have my nano ledger s connected to my laptop more than like 20 minutes at the most.  But we have to fully charge it?  I never heard of this?  So because the words now on the nano ledger s is pretty dim, does that mean my battery is wearing out?  Now do i connect it to my usb port for a few hours to get stronger battery?  Or is the battery already worn out?

Also how do you check your battery percentage similar to like how much battery your iphone used up?

It also says

The battery is designed to last 5 years. Ledger does not provide a battery replacement program. If battery capacity has degraded beyond being practically usable, the device can be used by connecting it to a power source using the USB cable.

Can someone explain what this means?  So that means if the battery degraded, you can still use the nano ledger s?  Im confused what it means it can still be used connecting to a power source using the usb cable?  Because when i use it, i always connect it to my laptop so im a bit confused what is meant here?

Has anyone here notice when they connect nano ledger s to their computer, its very dim?  What should i do now?  Just connect it to my laptop for a few hours?

Ledger Nano S does not have built-in battery. Nano X is the first model with such a feature. It was released last year. You don't have to worry about anything.

By the way, you shouldn't keep lithium batteries charged at 100% if you intend not to use them. 60%-80% is more reasonable.

So what about the nano ledger s then?

I have already said that it doesn't have a built-in battery so you can keep using it as you normally do. I guess you meant the Nano X here. If so, what would you like me to explain?

jerry0, every few months you seem to wake up from a winter dream and start asking stupid questions (no offense). The specific question is completely missed because after all the questions you have already been answered you have not learned even the most basic. Even when you get a direct and precise answer, you still don't get it - the Ledger Nano S doesn't have a built-in battery, it is powered by a USB port on your computer or via an OTG cable on your smartphone.

And as for the blurred screen, you might need to wipe it off of dust (because you haven't used it for months), or if that doesn't solve the problem, send a query to Ledger Support.

Don't be confused on nano S and X, everything is explained above.

If you're concern of nano X which is battery powered (100 mah) it last hours if you unplug/take it off after use and few months if idle.

Right, so establishing that we are talking about a Ledger Nano S here (which doesn't have a battery), then there a couple of things you can try.

First of all, it has a brightness setting you can adjust to low, mid or high under Settings -> Display -> Brightness. See here: https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360017638473-Change-display-brightness

If that doesn't make a difference, there have been reports in the past of older models of the Nano S having issues with their screen, such as:
https://www.reddit.com/r/ledgerwallet/comments/76pxhc/issue_with_extremely_dim_ledger_nano_s_screen/
https://www.reddit.com/r/ledgerwallet/comments/7pzyg7/ledger_nano_s_screen_has_gone_dim_is_this/

So this could be a case of slowly failing hardware. First of all, make sure you have your seed phrase backed up somewhere, as if your Nano S dies and you don't have it, your coins are gone. If you don't have it, create a new wallet, back up that seed phrase, and send all your coins there. Then I would drop a message to Ledger support (https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/requests/new) and see if they have any solutions, or would potentially offer you a replacement unit.

I got this problem in the early days and have never really figured why. The brightness was set to the maximum for sure otherwise I can't read correctly. Perhaps because I dropped it on the floor. Finally, I gave up and I got rid of it by giving it to a friend of mine who was new to Bitcoin.

But honestly, some components of the device are of poor quality, particularly the plastic, I have another Nano S, it fell only once and that dislodged the cover. Cheap plastic from Aldi

Mine is rock solid. It's been dropped, crammed in travel bags, taken around the world a couple of times and I've even sat on it twice... and it's still pretty much in "mint" condition. Guess I just got lucky...

Mine is in great condition as well. I generally take good care of hardware I own. I've never dropped a phone, cracked a screen or broken a device physically. I keep mine in a box with the original foam protection they are shipped with to protect it from bouncing around in the box when it is moved. The metal cover protecting the screen does feel rather cheap actually and I don't think a lot of force is needed to make it loosen up or come off completely.

Failing hardware? I also got the similar issue and then restarted the device after which is worked fine. There was an invisible line that appeared on the screen and on restarting it, it disappeared. This device doesn't even come with a warranty nor any repair center in my country.

Ledger devices have a 12 months warranty. In case of issues with it, they recommend sending the device back and you will receive a free replacement. There have been cases where they have sent out free replacements even after the warranty expired.

For your own safety I would never send a hardware wallet to a tech guy. Especially one that hasn't been reset and wiped clean. It's not worth the gamble. Chances are he wont be able to do anything nasty but the 'what if' is always there. Just contact Ledger support and they will take care of you.

Hi.  I apologize for this.  The thing is i haven't used my nano ledger s to send/receive btc in a while.  And i don't always connect it to my laptop if i don't do this.  Again, i do update the ledger live when i see it.  As with the firmware updates, i done i believe 2 of them.  The first one i did, had a huge issue where i had to do lot of troubleshooting and HCP helped me a lot with it.

I took some pictures of my screen.  Do you want me to post the picture?  The issue is when i take the photos with my iphone up close, it doesn't look that blurry unless you want me to take a picture of it a bit farther?  Again, im 100% certain the screen does not look that bright like its running out of battery... which is why i asked this in the first place.  When i checked ledger site, i saw it talked about battery but then i saw it meant the nano ledger x... not the s.

There is nothing to wipe off on the ledger s... there is no dust or anything like that.  But where do you guys keep your ledger nano s?  Do you just keep it in the original box?  Or you leave it on your desk or something?  Like if your apartment is very humid, could that cause damage to it?  Im located in an area where its extremely hot/humid all year so i have to have my windows opened etc.  But keeping it in the nano ledger s box is good enough?  I actually put my nano ledger in like a fanny pack etc.

Also if you want to change the brightness, its going to display right?  The thing is i never changed the brightness ever.

But how common is the issue i have?  Again i read these ledger s goes for 5 years right?  So anyone here had the nano ledger s close to that amount of time?  I got mine back in early 2018 so around 2 years etc.  But should you look to get a replacement after the 3rd year in case?

I also like to mention...at the moment, i do not have my 24 word seed with me at the moment in my apartment.  Its in another apartment etc in another country.  So that is why when ppl say just do firmware update... im bit hesistant because i dont have my seed with me at the moment.  So any firmware update i do, i prefer to do it when i have the seed back in the USA.  I dont like keeping my seed where im located etc.

I suggest That you don't do the firmware update, because it will probably reset your device.

There is no brightness control or anything   like that.

Just plug and play your device.  There is no battery.

Something is really strange here, as the questions are too dumb for someone who bought and sent bitcoins to that device.

I have several. They are all stored at room temperature and whatever the ambient humidity is. I've had no problems with any of them, ranging from 6 months to several years.

Like if your apartment is very humid, could that cause damage to it?
Potentially, yes. Condensation from high humidity can cause corrosion and short circuiting.

Also if you want to change the brightness, its going to display right?  The thing is i never changed the brightness ever.

I wouldn't say "probably". I've firmware updated multiple Ledger devices multiple times and never once had a device reset on me. I still wouldn't do it if I didn't have the seed to hand, but it's not a common occurrence.

Maybe not probable...
but my experience was slightly different than yours.

My device already reset twice.

Once when I updated its firmware (there was a warning in the internet about this, so I was expecting)

and the second time it was completely involuntary. I just inserted my device in my computer and poof, reseted. Luckily, I had my seed close by. I noticed some other users reporting the same problem, and it was a firmware bug (already fixed and doesn't happen anymore)

Someone said there is a brightness option so that is why i ask that.  Again i never ever tried to change anything like this on the device.

I bought this nano ledger about 2 years ago.  I been using it ever since but i dont use it daily or even weekly anymore.  Previously i kept btc in electrum wallet on computer.

I wouldn't say "probably". I've firmware updated multiple Ledger devices multiple times and never once had a device reset on me. I still wouldn't do it if I didn't have the seed to hand, but it's not a common occurrence.

Thanks for that info.  Well i also dont want to put it out in the open in case.  Where im located theft happens.  And i dont want it out in the open.  But i think the humidity could be a cause... but again its already inside a fanny pack.

Well this firmware update im concerned because i read so many ppl talk about it resetting.  Again my issue is i dont have my seed with me at the moment... but also... i never did a reset of my nano ledger ever thus to test it out 3x wrong to reset it.  But i made sure i wrote my 24 word seed correct.  So based on that, would you say best to buy another ledger device and when i get back to the US, send a test btc deposit from this ledger s to the new ledger s... then reset the new ledger s by putting wrong pin 3x.  Then reset it with the 24 word phrase with the new nano s... and then send the rest of my btc in the old nano s to the new one?  I think this is probably the safest thing to do...

Yea for it to happen twice is very scary.  I mean if you dont have your seed ... i dont what to say.  But how does ledger have these type of bugs?  When you say the firmware bug is already fixed... u mean for those that are using 1.5.5 or the ones that are using 1.6?
