Feature suggestion - Turn embeded images into URLs + thread topic hijacking prev

I have seen a common complaint about images being quotes and being loaded over and over again in threads making the page jump around and increasing load times. I was thinking a simple way to solve this issue would be to convert embedded images in quotes automatically into URLs. This way the image is still referenced but lazy people quoting it won't spam up the page. Of course it could be turned into an embed manually if needed.

Along a similar train of thought, another issue I have seen raised before is when people modify the topic subject in a thread reply, and people quote them without even noticing. Before too long the thread subject title is hijacked. A feature to make a subject title the same as the OP automatically even when quoting would be useful for this, because when this is abused it can be distracting from the actual discussion.

Automatic replace quoted images into URL links looks a good solution but there are some disadvantages.
URL links (in quotes) will blur original contents (infographics, charts, ie.) and make readers a litle bit confused what posters pointed out. Sure readers can click on URL link of image to see what it is but it will be a problem and might distract them from those images, then might miss some valuable information.

I propose to restrict a fixed resolution for all images in quotes.

I disagreed because OPs have to update their threads over time and at different updates their threads need to have different titles for posts inside threads (not OPs). I think only allow OPs to edit titles of OPs or posts in their threads are more appropriately.
Any posts quote post A or replies later the post A of OPs with the title "project X, update in November 2019" will have only one title "Re: project X, update in November 2019". But once again, I think there are many people disagree with my suggestion too.

And I disagree with your disagreement. What is stopping people from just... scrolling up to look at the image? No one said only allow the OP to make subject headings. I said automatically make them the same as the OP, so that when you click quote/reply, it shows the OP title, not the title you just replied to. Nothing would stop you from manually changing it. Please at least read/think about an idea presented before shitting on it, this is just lazy.

They don't have to click on an external URL; they can just click on the "Quote from:" and go back to the original post. If the person replying really feels the reader needs to be able to see the picture and their response on the same page, then they can just re-embed the image as they normally would. I suspect such cases are few and far between, however, compared to the number of people who just blindly quote pictures and clutter up a page.

This would actually have another hidden benefit that you've probably not considered. In the altcoin section, and announcement threads users like to bump their threads by just quoting their fancy images. Probably, a way of getting exposure of their image again. That would likely neutralize this. Of course, this behavior will still go on with written content based posts, but at least the annoying images will be gone.

Not only images but also the large OPs being quoted even after we put local rules to not quote the large OP. Large images slow down, and large text base content is just annoying when quoted in full.

The one solution to this as TECSHARE suggested and what o_e_l_e_o added later, but there could be another effective solution imo which is Collapse/Expand, maybe in other forums they call it SPOILER, not sure tho.

The early year solutions on SMF by means of mods seemed pretty decent:

Some people made a similar feature as mods for SMF. The mods removed the image from the quotes, and replaced it with a link, that could be clicked in order to restore the image within the quote (at will). That would be nice here.

Seemed like a thing in the early years of SMF.

Specifically, the images shown on the first referenced post depict the viewing process which seems pretty good: Image is replaces by a link that, if clicked by the viewer, will be deployed within the quoted text. Pretty elegant I’d say.

Good idea imo. I don't have issues with someone quoting an image but it gets really annoying after the 3rd or 4th quote. Either turn it into an URL or simply delete it from the quote.

+1 to what TECSHARE has said. If you are really interested in the topic and you want to be part of the conversation then I think it's an automatic thing to do for any reader to read previous posts rather than just focus on the one you are trying to reply. Just by reading and replying to that single post you are actually wasting valuable information on what other members have previously said. If you don't even want to scroll up and you think it is a wast of time you can even click quoted message and be redirected to the original post where you can view the image.

Bleh, I've seen that happen and to me it doesn't matter a great deal--plus most people don't even notice it.  That's a non-issue in my opinion.

But the image thing, that I would mostly agree with you on.  I don't often get the jumpy-image issue, but as I said in the thread I made yesterday a lot of images that members include in their threads are completely unnecessary and usually oversized.  Not all images, of course, but there are a few members who tend to really overdo it.  I wouldn't mind if those kinds of images were reduced to a link, maybe based on the size of the image....?  I don't think it would be a good thing to do that for every image, though.  A lot of members include pictures of charts in TA threads and some post funny memes which are usually appropriate to the thread they're in, and I think those should be shown.

It would be much better if, instead of making a change in the forum setup, members would only include images 1) of a reasonable size, and 2) when they're relevant to the thread.

Oh yeah, and #3:  Members should stop quoting posts that show images altogether.  That's probably asking too much of people, but it's good forum etiquette IMO.

even if its a "click to load image" in-situ.....  This way you know an image is there, and want to reference, click to display kind of thing.

would take more coding... but is definitely possible.

I do see some people's reasoning for it not being necessary on all board sections.
