This question pops up several times per year:

https://cse.google.com/cse?cx=016660200577587308545%3Aesf40ml9aag&ie=UTF-8&q=mobile&sa=Google+search#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=mobile%20version%20bitcointalk&gsc.sort=

The thing is, there is a new forum script for bitcointalk that is in development, so i don't think Theymos will install a mobile theme for SMF (because he customised SMF, it's not as simple as installing a theme on a plain vanilla version of SMF).

That being said, i've been giving the answer of epochtalk being in development for years... Literally... For the untrained eye, it looks like the development stalled, i don't know if there's any kind of timeframe for the conversion SMF => epochtalk, but if there is a timeframe, i don't think it'll be anytime soon...

There is no time-frame, the forum is basically ready for use, but there are still so many bugs that someone has to report and fix. I've open a thread regarding the development process to monitor the changes and bug fixes.
According the last of theymos on the topic we are the ones to "decide" when it will be ready, it's all to us to test it and report the bugs.

~
In short: If you want the software quicker, go run your own forum with it, and work to get any problems or missing features you find resolved via bug reports, etc. This would increase public interest, provide much-needed testing, and I might even hire you to work on bitcointalk.org when we're ready to do the final transition here.

Back on topic there are already many mobile solutions like this > https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4500633.0
But nothing official.

The Epochtalk beta should be made more visible to members. Most of us are kept in the dark and like moca mentioned, we thought it's pretty much stalled.

I feel that the forum development be more simple and straightforward. In other words, allow users to directly access the beta or WIP such as beta.bitcointalk.org and then allow users to post on the current subforum. Rather than download this, setup that, upload logs; you get the idea.

After all, it's just a forum and not some fully-blown web app like a casino or a social media page which incorporates a bunch of features. The core functions are pretty much the boards, ad spaces, spam protection and theme responsiveness.

The forum could always improve along the way, instead of waiting for the "perfect" time to release. By the time that happens, I think most of us are taking care of our grandchildren.

EpochTalk, which is Bitcointalk's future forum software, is already responsive(everything adjusts depending on screen size) by design so an application is pretty much almost unnecessary. You can help test out the software if you want: https://www.cryptos-currencies.com/boards ; the responsiveness works well on my end.

That's neat. I have one question though.

Is this the official development version or just a separate (prototype) entity? By the former, I mean that once the migration happens, the forum will move to the database we're testing on.

No, everyone is free to install and test it. The lulu's website is just the same as the > https://coinbistro.com/ website. Sure theymos sent some support for the developer but it's only a testing ground for the forum software. When one day (not in the near future) our forum migrates to the final Epochtalk it will be on this same domain as we have it now.

Or is it still fine if I were to register an account on the Cryptos forum and test from there?

No, you don't have to install anything... Theymos asked the community if there were people willing to install the software on their own servers and use it for their own forums in order to debug it in a live situation.
As a nontechnical enduser, you should just wait untill most of the bugs have been found and fixed, at that point Theymos should install the software on one of his servers, migrate the database, and you should just be able to login into the new bitcointalk without any hassle....

The forum I linked is a test forum created by someone(on my phone, lazy to check) here on Bitcointalk(that's not Theymos). Once Theymos thinks the new forum software is ready, we're going to move to the new software, whereas the cryptos-currency.com test forum is still going to exist because it's solely created to test stuff.

Before request for mobile app, it makes sense to spend time to think backwards on why you join the forum.

- To read and learn: about bitcoin, blockchain, find out potential good projects. For those ones, using web browsers on mobile is good enough (I could be wrong).

- To write and discuss (by writing of course): mobile app can not help you to have more convenient than web browsers on mobile. Typing on mobile is always slower and less convenient than on computers.

I see the request many times, and most of those requests come from people who have limited contributions for the community. They rarely discuss with the others, help the others, so mobile app or not does not a matter for them (I don't attack OP).

In the future, with Epochtalk-software-based forum, I think we will have a forum's mobile app that is a very low in to-do list of the forum (not sure when we will have it).

Matter of preference, I find typing on mobile way easier than PCs and with keyboards like SwiftKey, your keyboard completes words for you, it's way faster.

I mean, it's definitely faster to type on a PC for sure, but convenience is another thing. You can type on a phone wherever you are. Take note that not every single one of us here sits in front of a computer 12 to 16 hours a day. Tongue

But yea, an app is unnecessary, but we at least need a responsive UI; which is being achieved by Epochtalk.

Do you have any specific features for mobile devices? Or do you want to see anything differently when viewing from a phone?

Some of us paid a whopping $10 for a Bluetooth keyboard... Maybe you should look into getting one, you could probably wire one up to your device for even cheaper.

I, personally, wouldn't use an app unless it was a lot different. Most apps come without things like an ability to zoom into stuff and set character size preferences that I like to use.

If one is added a peer to peer messaging system would be quite nice.

I completely get where you're coming from. I personally use bluetooth keyboards too if I go out specifically to write stuff on my phone. But I assume you don't bring your bluetooth keyboard everywhere you go? I was referring more of when leaving home to do some stuff. Tongue Reddit's UI/UX is great for those "let me read and talk on r/bitcoin for a bit while waiting for my order" moments.

Yeah, you can't use it stood up either... Although they are really thin so you could get away with taking it everywhere and just putting it with a portable charger in a backpack..

For a retro forum, you need a retro phone. Of of the best phones  I ever owned.
No need to carry a bluetooth keyboard, you already have one perfect so you can type fast and the most importat is no Andorid, no Windows Phone, No Mac.. in one word. no shit..
Nobody will hack your password, no malwares, no viruses.

I never manage to break it, and it's still lying somewhre around the house.
This is the top notch for the forum the good old Nokia N900.
