I was watching a video last night on this powder that can be placed in filthy water and it binds all the solids and also disinfect the water within 30 minutes. This got me thinking, if someone could get some Blockchain project running to help with the funding for a bunch of these packets, then we can make a real difference in people's lives. Demo : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yG90QjiAWTg

It should be something similar to this : https://www.gcfdn.org/Giving/Funds-of-the-Foundation/Procter-Gamble-Charitable-Giving/Childrens-Safe-Drinking-Water-Fund

A human can go for more than three weeks without food, but the maximum time a person can go without water seems to be a week.

We saw what massive difference the Pineapple fund made to charities, but I think a project like this will make an even bigger impact, because the water sources for many people are filthy around the world and a few packets like this will provide clean drinking water for 1000's of people for a whole year.

Do you have any interesting projects that can be linked to donations for charity projects like this? Please find a way to include this in your projects or to start something new.  Huh

We can also crowd ask that P&G fund to accept donations in Bitcoin to also boost that project, if we cannot start something on our own.  Wink They currently only accept Credit card payments.  Sad - $7.50 - give a child clean water for a year...

If there is already a charity for safe drinking water and you feel you would like to help, why not donate your fiat currency?  It's not necessary to recreate the wheel.  Also, existing charities can't use Bitcoin in it's digital form; they must convert it to fiat first at further expense which is a waste of your donation.  Accepting Bitcoin will not boost any charity - especially Proctor & Gamble's - with Bitcoin's total value at less than 0.2% of the world's money,  it's not logical to think it would.  Seriously, use your gov't controlled cash for charities.  Keep your Bitcoins for yourself.

This is in such moments I say to myself, people try to "blockchainize/tokenize" everything they think is good. Don't get me wrong, it's good to help, but the poster above summed it up clearly the reality. Waste of time and resources for both parties

Better to use fiat and put everything in 1 jar

I agree with a lot of this, but it's more of a "extra work involved" getting crypto setup for donations.

Yeah they'll need to pay a fee to convert crypto to fiat if they can't pay any of their suppliers in crypto, but this fee is usually less than what credit card companies charge. Think of every purchase you make with a credit card about 1-3% goes to the banks, you don't pay this the merchant does.

So accepting crypto for donations would be more beneficial to the charities, but since it's something new they would need to put a bunch of effort to do it and learn how to properly do it.

Age old business problems
In the long term this will save us, but will increase our upfront costs. Most organizations would rather spend a little bit a lot of times rather than a lot a few times.

Edit* Just to add if you want a charity to accept crypto, go to the charity and volunteer, work with them learn how and what they do. And then approach the people who can make decisions / managers at the organization and give them a pitch.

But if you just say I like what this place is doing they should accept BTC. I'm going to send them an email with all these benefits, don't expect too much from them.

StoryTime:
I did something like this before, at a convention talking to a company that had no place in crypto, I talked to many companies that day and all the reps basically laughed and said it would never happen. The next day one of those reps came up and said "I'd like to apologize for my comments the day before, we just received a memo this morning saying that as of this coming Friday they would accept BTC payments for any items sold on their site. Nothing I said got them to change their minds, the company already was working on integration it's just the sales / marketers had no idea, basically just talking to the wrong people.

^That company was Dell

I think what a lot of people do not understand about this, is the fact that donations done with other payment options are lining the pockets of the Banks, with all the fees that are charged. <On the donator and charity side>  The whole idea from the beginning was to reduce the cost of these transactions and to put the whole amount donated into the pocket of the charity.  Wink

The other thing that are beneficial with a project like this is that we are creating a "reason" for people to use Bitcoin as a currency. It adds to the utility of the token, when you add use cases for the coin.

I could care less if Proctor & Gamble was a multi Billion dollar company or a coffee shop on the corner of the street, because we are not competing with them. We as a Bitcoin community are adding our own value to the charity and well being of children and people suffering all around the world.

I cannot believe that a few $1000 in bitcoin donations, would not make a difference in some people's lives and that it will not have a positive contribution to this world.  Roll Eyes

Contaminated water can transmit diseases such Diarrhoea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid, and polio. Contaminated drinking water is estimated to cause 485 000 Diarrhoeal deaths each year. By 2025, half of the world's population will be living in water-stressed areas. - Source : https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/drinking-water

Globally, at least 2 billion people use a drinking water source contaminated with faeces.- Source : https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/drinking-water

We can help to reduce those statistics by only making a small bitcoin donation. Imagine if you made 1 donation of say $7 and you saved the live of 1 child.   Wink

Perhaps the best thing we can do is to keep some currencies donations for such a project and after several years we will notice the high value of these "assets" currencies, which enables us to invest more money to make life better.

It is similar to the money that was allocated to the forum in the first days "more than 100 bitcoin" Now this money can change a lot of things.

Or it may be that Bitcoin has become an approved method of payment.

Many successful blockchain projects already support a wide variety of charities and humanitarian causes.

Binance and Coinbase just donated a crap load of money to help with the novel coronavirus, whereas a bunch of other platforms help out in other ways, by providing grants and scholarships to students and such.

The fact is, companies are just as greedy as individuals (if not more so), they don't like giving away their profits simply because they need to keep their shareholders happy.

Only 100% private companies can typically do stuff like this.

I am not talking about private companies. A few years ago there was a website, where you would donate money and then a automated watering system would fill up to water a garden. The whole system was covered with 24 hour video streaming, so you could see the garden being watered by that system, as the donations came in.

Now imagine someone creating something similar to this with a token dropping for every packet that are funded via this site. It can be a virtual vending machine or something in real life with say gumballs or sweets.

Crowd funding for charities are sometimes more effective than large companies just dropping a bunch of money into a project. It is also a lot more fun when the community link this with something that you can see. < Like a Thermometer filling up to see the funding grow towards the end goal >  Grin

You mean like Polly Feed? Doing that with kids and drinking watter would be ..... controversial to say the least. But controversy in a playful way can create attention.

Ok, that would be pushing it, if we did that with children... but it is a interesting option.  Grin  They could put a vending machine like that in schools and then have it pop out for FREE after someone did a donation.  Cool

My idea was more that this kind of setup must be put online to show the person donating where his or her powder packets are going. You can have a list of different schools or clinics or small villages and a pigeon hole for each.. You then give the donator a list of those options and he or she can then for instant press #2 for say "Cambridge School" and the amount of packets for that donation will drop out in that pigeon hole in real time.  Wink

This will just be a fun way to include technology and the Internet and Crypto currencies to demonstrate how online charities can be done. There will obviously be someone on the other end to fill the vending machine and then to collect the packets and to distribute them, if this was not centralized in several locations.

A lot of these locations does not have good bandwidth, so that is why I suggest that it must be done in a central location with good Internet and then distributed.

I just bought my first 500 packets of the P&G water purifiers to test if this is what it claims to be, because I do not want to get people all fired up about something and then it turns out to be a scam. It was quite cheap on Amazon, but I bought it from another site with faster deliveries.

Once I tested it, I will report back here and if it turns out to be something legit, I will distribute it to the poor in Africa on my next visit there. < I frequently go there for work, so it will be a good opportunity to see how they will accept it >

If this is successful, we could start talking more seriously on doing something more formal. Nothing is stopping people from doing something on their own, so if you want to do something, please feel free to do it.  Wink

Kakmakr - you won't be able to make these things fast enough, and then there will be no need as the population corrects itself.  Florida is porous and salt water is creeping further every year.  The southwest is facing water shortages as the Colorado river dries up.   And that is just the US.

#Vod, I am missing your point.  Roll Eyes

You are talking about 2 or 3 areas in one country, where I am talking about the whole world. We only have a small amount of drinkable water, because the majority of it is so polluted that it is almost undrinkable.

Some 80 percent of the world's wastewater is dumped—largely untreated—back into the environment, polluting rivers, lakes, and oceans. This widespread problem of water pollution is jeopardizing our health. - Source : https://www.nrdc.org/stories/water-pollution-everything-you-need-know

In 1st world countries with a lot of wealth, this is not a major issue, because they have the funds to build facilities to clean enough water for their own citizens, but in poorer 3rd world countries these challenges just snowball into something that the governments cannot manage. <They do not get enough tax income from the poor people to render 1st world country quality services and the poor people suffer the most>

Then you add the corruption in governments, where most of the tax income are stolen through bad tenders and you have even less service demands that are reached.  Angry

A project like this will target the poorest of the poor that are neglected by their own governments through corruption and misappropriation of funding to provide clean water. These people have to rely on help from charities like this to support their daily water needs.

The plan is not to clean all water sources, but rather a small amount of the water that are being extracted as drinking water by the poor.

Are you hoping to profit off this project?

If so, your product will never reach the poor.  You'll give them away to start, then richer people will start offering to buy them.

This will only work if you are a registered charity and aren't after a profit.

Nope... note the Request... in my thread title.  Wink  If I wanted to profit from this, I would have started the project and charged people to participate.  Wink  You have to be one sick individual, if you want to profit off a charity that are helping poor people.  Roll Eyes

This kind of project can be started by anyone with some skills to write a bit of code for the interface and with some skills to do the mechanical parts, if they want to do the steaming part of the project.

This can be done with any other type of project, other than the one that I suggested. You buy the packets with the money donated and you distribute it to the poor in your area. I am even thinking of buying some sugar-free and preservatives-free fruit-flavoured powdered soft drink sachets, to add some flavor to the water. <Sponsored by Bitcoin>

Let's just be creative and do something to provide "clean" drinking water to the poor.  Wink

We do have a non-profit organization related to providing clean water that accept Bitcoin donations directly namely TheWaterProject.org. I know way back that charity:water for some time accepted Bitcoin donations directly in there organization but when I visited the site it seems like they have removed that option and opted out for credit card and Paypal options instead. For TheWaterProject.org aside from accepting Bitcoin on their "Give Once" option they also accept BitcoinCash, Ethereum, and Litecoin which I think is more than enough to anyone who is willing to donate there crypto. In my opinion donating directly to a non-profit organization is a much better way compared to asking the help of multi-billion corporations like P&G for the crowdfunding since the way I see it they'll just be using our money for the benefit of marketing their own names, basically they'll be the ones taking credit with the money we have given to them.

Guys and Gals, you are not understanding this whole concept. We are not asking P&G for nothing. P&G was mentioned here, because they developed the product and this product are being sold online for everyone to buy. I just named the developer of the product, so that people can see what the brand name is, if they want to Google it.

In anyway, how do you crowdfund something from a single company? < Crowd = many people >  Roll Eyes

Let me simplify the concept... We buy the product online with money that was donated and then find some kind of creative method to show the people that their donations are actually being turned into physical donations of a actual product. < Example : donate $10 - 20 packets of purifier are dropped into a bucket - Everything is streamed live for the donators pleasure. >

So is it similar to LifeStraw they did some Kickstarters with their project way back June of 2019 and it was their way to raise funds for both their product and charity? Users can directly buy their products and at the same time the money (not all) goes through their projects about giving clean water from their products through their purifying systems. Though they aren't as a big as P&G they still have a direct product related to purifying water to become drinkable on these villages. You can also monitor their activity with their Google map link which shows where they have accomplished the projects on and right now its not a lot since all of the projects right now are in the Westerns regions of Kenya.

I do not like the Lifestraw concept, because it is very expensive (remember the US Dollar are a lot stronger than most other currencies) and you have to deal with filters. Most people in 3rd world countries cannot read and they also speak other languages. The Lifestraw Community is $395 and the process to replace the filter is very complicated.  Roll Eyes

What is more simple than opening a little packet and throwing the content into a bucket and then stirring it and leaving it until it had done it's job.  Huh

The Lifestraw GO is cheaper, but not a good solution for a lot of people, because it sells for $39.95 and it cleans a lot less water than the bigger version.
