I've been visiting Somerset in the van for a few days, and last night I stayed in a picnic area and truck stop. This morning I went into the cafe for an early morning coffee, and I was offered a bottle of hand sanitiser, and asked to use some. This is obviously as a result of the Coron Virus appearing in the UK. I had no problem with complying, but I'm not sure how useful it is. Far more of a problem could be the communal use of the 'loos in my opinion.

i can understand truck stops have truckers from different regions and even abroad stopping by. but some places just go over the top when their local news says their is suspected cases nearby
most of it is media. talking about how some schools in that area had kids sent home sick. where some students had recently been on a school trip to italy
i wouldnt mind using hand sanitiser if im shaking peoples hands or touching things a random group of people would also touch. but i would hope that the truck stop chef atleast had a high grade hygiene certificate himself. and was not wiping his sweat and snot into his hands before then touching burger buns (gordon ramseys kitchen/hotel renovation shows really highlight the real risk to getting sick)
id be more concerned with ecoli and/or getting run over by a truck in said truck stop than i would be of corona
but things get a little over the top when you start seeing people rub alcohol and hand sanitiser on their steering wheel when they are the only ever driver of their own car.
im just waiting for project immigration fear to start treating asian tourists as terrorists.. i can already sniff this sort of crap happening

The cafe has a local council rating of 5 - which is the highest rating.
The food is basic, and a bit expensive, but it saves cooking if I'm not in the mood. It has an associated picnic area, so most of their business comes from tourists, as well as travelling business people.

I think this is an example of a broad brush approach that can look stupid and pointless in certain cases, but is valuable in others. It's far easier for the government to say something like 'all businesses open to the public must make people use hand sanitisers' than it is for them to stipulate exact type of business and specific circumstances. So whilst it may seem over the top, it leads to less confusion and ensures it is implemented in places where it needs to be (as well as some of those where it doesn't need to be). Agree that other things can be more of a problem - regarding public toilets, having hand operated taps - faucets for US friends - is an obvious issue. Come out of the toilet with dirty hands, touch the tap to make that dirty as well, clean your hands, touch the dirty tap again to turn it off before leaving...

Did they have toilets and were they nice? If not I can understand it.
If a trucker is taking a pee or a dump in a truck you don't want their hands coming straight onto your cafe tables...
On an extra note, things like this add a psychological factor its like the cafes trying to scream "we're clean!".

That was your spouse doing the same thing he/she does every morning before you handle food and cookware he/she might have to handle or eat.

+1 to the psychological factor of things here. People don't notice but that's a large majority of what people do-- to make themselves look like they're a certain way, even when they know that they're not. But honestly I don't think it's that much of a problem. People are scared because of what the media is going to blow this whole thing out of proportion. People don't understand that while the problem is pretty big, the coronavirus still isn't as deadly as something like the Flu. But the Flu isn't news, so the media can't run with it. This is why they're running with the coronavirus. Media loves panic, and they're going to run with this until they cant.

The hand sanitizer is a protective measure, more effective than masks.

@Kuffy that’s an excellent practice from a reputed place, and I’m glad you didn’t create a scene and simply complied with their request. Furthermore if you’re travelling then using sanitisers is a good option, but if you’re at home then use soap or liquid hand wash as those are more effective against coronavirus. https://nypost.com/2020/03/02/hand-washing-or-hand-sanitizer-whats-more-effective-against-coronavirus/

Most viruses spread by contact. Being airborne is just a trait - you can still get an airborne virus through contact. Viruses can live on surfaces a lot longer than they stay airborne too. If this virus scare makes more people aware of sanitizing their hands, that is a good thing about it.

The hand sanitizer is a protective measure, more effective than masks. I read a meme last night, mask can save us from corona virus but 90% of masks were produced from China. To OP, using hand sanitiser helps you really because it can wipe off virus if it presented on your hands then you will be less likely affected. But corona is turning into more disastrous than everyone thought.

Sadly in this part of the world where I found myself in, a lot of people are just opportunists, imagine a hand sanitiser that used to be sold for 1$ being sold as high as $60, and they all hide under the umbrella of scarcity of the product when we all know its a big fat lie, I wish I had bought enough before the break out!

^^^ But the REAL question is, How long do you continue to spread the virus after you die from drinking too much alcohol?

^^^ But the REAL question is, How long do you continue to spread the virus after you die from drinking too much alcohol? Only if you continue coffin. The silly part about this sanitisation is that they don't use a sanitising spray on the serving counter. They spray the tables in between customer use, but not the counter that everybody leans on to pay.

Lol maybe it's just that the restaurant of coffee shop does it generally? If they don't, then it's really concerning how the public is fearing the virus... Maybe in few days we will have to wear masks everywhere :/ let's hope it gets eradicated quickly.

Right! If the restaurant workers have to wear hairnets, patrons should at least have to wash their hands!

Mate, get used to it already because that is just the beginning actually. Don't be alarmed, I'm sure that Corona virus cases in the Europe region is not yet as as bad as the SEA. Here in our country, even we only got few cases of infected people, safety measures are still exercised. In ports, airports and even in the hotel I checked in few weeks ago, we are required to get scan by body temp. analyzer and ask us whether we have recent travel history outside the country. Most of establishments also have a hand sanitizer dispenser and most of the people you will encounter along the street wear face mask. It is my first time to experience such kind of scenario, everyone around you is cautious which is a little bit disturbing but well I can't blame them because the stigma was in there already. Honestly, I have a dry cough at this moment but nothing to worry about . It was due to lack of sleep and change of weather during my review for board exam lol. My immune system fall down but I'm now working on it since our exam was already finished.

In my opinion, disinfectants should really help control the spread of the virus. I think it’s important to keep track of this yourself and use disinfectants more often.

If government regs make this impossible, make it a Private Membership Association, so that gov regs don't apply.
