The robbers might have really known much information about the victim to know that he deals in cryptocurrencies.  We all need to be vigilant of our security and the people we share our online dealings with. This is really sad news to hear at this time and moment, my heart really goes out to the family of the victim at this sorrowful time.

Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

Thanks for sharing this news, everyone regardless of how much they are holding should be aware of the possible risk.
Some people may think that once you are involved in crypto, you are holding a good amount of money, that kind of misconception might lead us to danger.

This news is full of sadness, killing a person because of such a relatively small amount of money. Apparently, the deceased once lost his caution and, perhaps, told someone about his Bitcoins, perhaps even the same killers. It's scary of course to read this.

Sad story but I guess this is what can happen in a country where people are desperate for enough money just to live. Terrible shame he was killed for what some of us see as a trivial amount of BTC.

This news is devastatingly alarming. Aside from the precautionary measures that everyone should be practicing, we should also be reminded that sharing of too much information about our private transactions and current status is a great threat to our security. When it comes to money, may it be flat or cyrptocurrency, we should be cautious of our actions and vigilant to our decisions regardless of the amount we possess. Along with the fame that Bitcoin gains through time, is the danger that is being formed unto the minds of people who wants to take advantage.

Jumping on someone to get him to give you the seeds/private keys/passwords is the most stupid thing someone could do. If they were hackers, it must have been their last resort to accomplish the task. Roll Eyes
I guess you didn't read the post carefully. Hackers were not the ones to shoot the guy.
The victim's friend knew that he had $10k worth of bitcoin in his wallet and so he had all of this planned.
He gathered some more people and encountered this murder.
I feel pity for the victim since his own friend did this to him.

This is why we should never tell anyone about our cryptocurrency holdings. Not even my close friends and family members know that I own cryptocurrency. Now this strategy has its own risks. For example, if something happens to me, then the wallet will become inaccessible and the coins would be lost forever. But compared to the risks if my coin holdings are publicized, I would rather choose this.

It is strange that this is getting media attention, because people are getting robbed every day and it is not getting special attention.  Roll Eyes I guess the fact that they thought that this guy is having $10 000 worth of Crypto currencies on his phone, makes this news worthy.  Tongue

It can teach people to keep their mouths shut about crypto and how to carefully choose who you are dealing with, especially if you are in a dangerous country like Nigeria. These days cashless payments are very popular so many people have forgot about the danger of dealing with large sums in cash, and Bitcoin has a lot of similarities with cash.

I don't want to bring this news, but I guess everyone in crypto should understand the dangers whether online and offline. And another sad thing is that the man doesn't have $10k, but rather $400.
Also, we need not to tell anyone of our bitcoin stash, otherwise others might be tempted to robbed us as what happen here.
It is a really unfortunate event and to loose your life because someone you know wanted to rob that from you. This is where you should be aware of whom you are disclosing about your investment and how much you hold as this is not the first horrific incident regarding robbers targeting crypto investors, i have seen these kind of similar incidents from Netherlands and the UK in the past. Morale for everyone is never flaunt your wealth even to your friends or in social media.

Well, just don't tell anyone you're holding anything of value. Maybe it's not the closer ones who'd have some bad intentions, but you never know who might hear the information about your holdings and shit might happen.

If you're holding some valuable asset, keep the info to yourself. It's just common sense: you don't tell anyone that some ounces of gold are sitting in a vault inside your home, do you?

Unfortunate events happen so do mistakes. Should be a lesson for those who can still prevent this from happening..

The amount of money / assets that he's holding is not enough for his life, sad to say that from each individuals we do have our own interpretation of keeping our investment, this guy can easily give the money to the robber and think about his safety. But he did the other side and try to keep his crypto than concerning his own life.
Keep yourself safe from this kind of incident by secretly and quitely stored your assets away from the knowledge of others.

If this is true then it will be very easy to the authorities to get the justice for the victim. And I'm thinking, if the victim is not giving his access to his crypto on his phone then why shoot him? the suspect could have just kidnapped him until he let go of his private keys or something that unlocks it then he could set him free after. My wild guess is that the suspect only thinks of the value on his phone and does not know any thing about crypto security.

The sad truth is that there was never a $10,000 in that wallet, it seems like holding your own bitcoin is not safe now if you can't keep it confidential, you should also not be vocal that you are a crypto enthusiast to avoid wrong assumption that you also hold bitcoin.

It's actually sad to read this kind of news, but we are in-charge of our funds and our life, and if we are just educated with the risk, we should know the right approach in handing our funds safely.

It is sad to read this kind of story.  I believe whether it is in paper money or digital currency, we should be silent about how much we are holding. We never knew what is the intention of people around us, just like what the article is assuming about the victim's friend plotting all of those bad things just to have access to the cryptocurrency that the victim is holding in his mobile phone.  If the victim did not tell anyone about his holdings, that incident won't have happened.  So the lesson learned from this sad incident is to stay quiet about our crypto or cash holdings whether it is big or small.

An insider (friend to the deceased) is the major culprit he was responsible for killing having connived with robber I believed it's better to reveal any crypto assets to a trusted family member to a betrayal,  $10,000 is a huge amount of money in Nigeria, a friend can later be one's enemy when it comes to money matters.

i think part of the problem with some of the victims that boast the amount of money they have publicly is that they came to that money in a short time with little to no effort so they don't know how to deal with it. otherwise usually people who have earned their wealth through blood sweat and tears protect it a lot better and boast about it a lot less specially not in public.

There is a FOMO brewing...

Jeez. This is not just a sad news, but terrifying to think that people would think that cryptocurrency holders are rich that they would rob them. I think the the stereotype is spreading that robbers think that all Bitcoin holders are making a lot of money. I think this shouldn't have happened if he just kept this to himself and stayed anonymous about his Bitcoin holdings. We never know who will sell or betray us out. For $400, definitely not worth it.

Well, just don't tell anyone you're holding anything of value.
Really, it was a pretty sad event and I think this event should be a valuable lesson for the bitcoin community to never reveal the amount of assets they have even to the people closest to them even though its just not real.
Crimes involving money and property are common in various parts of the world and Nigeria is no exception. Robberies that cause casualties for victims almost every day occur and I think revealing the amount of wealth in the form of bitcoin and other crypto to others is something we must avoid to minimize crime. I think crime occurs not only because there is an intention, but also when there is an opportunity. So it is not wise to reveal our wealth to others even though it is your own friend.

For $400 money, a life has been loss. Maybe the rumor of having a $10k on his wallet will be the greatest gossip of his life. People should not or at least tell how much is in your posession cause other people will probably get tempted with it. Sad thing is, cryptocurrency has been involved. Hacking is a common scene in cryptocurrency but this one is worse which violence has been made just to get the funds. So sad, RIP for the guy.
$400 might look small but it isn't in Nigeria. $400 is around 140,000 naira which is more than what many bankers earn in a month. Aside from the crypto ish, Nigeria is a lawless country and unfortunately, not even police officers can save him because they are even more dangerous than harm robbers. It is becoming a norm for police officers to search citizens phones in Nigeria and ones they discover bitcoin wallets that have money ( for many of them that know what bitcoin is), you cannot go free  Grin you will have to settle them or they will detain you.
Thats not make sense at all. life is more precious than any other thing on earth. But if the neighborhood is like as what you said its nowhere to run police should be the protector of civilians againt those lawless elements but base on what you portrayed here they are more dangerous compare to those thieves its very disgusting.

Nigerian Man Shot Dead by robbers to access his mobile phone with crypto

in africa we have a lot of problems accepting that people can think very differently. From what I realized from this news, Mr. Iroro Wisdom Ovie who was murdered at his home was from the Peoples Democratic Party, from Abraka... and these guys from the Vikings confraternity, cult group probably murdered Mr. Iroro Wisdom Ovie because of political issues. Of course, in the middle of the act, there was a revelation that Mr. Iroro Wisdom Ovie's cell phone had $10,000, but I don't believe the group's initial intention was $10,000.
