I came across some threads where I found this text on the top.

Warning: One or more bitcointalk.org users have reported that they believe that the creator of this topic displays some red flags which make them high-risk. (Check their trust page to see the detailed trust ratings.) While the bitcointalk.org administration does not verify such claims, you should proceed with extreme caution.

These warning banners will disappear when you have 7 days of login time. You should familiarize yourself with the trust system before then.

my query has two parts

1. If someone gives you a negative trust, can you fight back like proving yourself correct and removing the negative trust from your profile.
2. what advantage you get if you give someone a negative trust?

1. If you have done no mistake, you will not get a negative feedback. If you receive negative feedback by mistake, you can contact with the person who left feedback and get removed the feedback. But if the person doesn't remove, no one can do anything including the admin because the trust system is not moderated.
However, if someone give wrong feedback, they will not be in DT member. So, no issue.
2. When you are going to trade, your feedback toward other will be visible and thus you will know whom to trust and whom to not.

If who is giving you the negative  feedback and if the reason is enough to get you one, if it is not a DT members then you have no reason to worry, you will not even know that you have one, because only DT member's feedback will reflect on your forum profile,  you can retaliate back but like what I said if it is not no need to worry, and if the reason is not valid.

You cannot remove a feedback yourself, if you are givien a negative feedback by any user, the feedback can only be changed by the user who tagged you. Though if the feedback doesn't hold any ground and the user who puts it refuses to change it, then other members on DT can give counter feedbacks(positives)against such ratings.

The advantage of a genuine negative rating is that it protects other users or visitors of the forum from such user, they would learn that the forum distrusts such member and it could save them from falling into grief if they trade with such user. Though there are a lot of erroneous feedback flying around the forum so LoyceV's Beginners guide to correct use of the Trust system is a must read.

I believe that giving a retaliatory negative in response to one you receive just doubles the effect of the one given to you. Think very carefully before you do it, and as been mentioned, contact the accuser first.

What is DT member?
DT= Default Trust
In simple words, not each and every feedback is shown in your profile, only feedback from DT member is shown. DT members are selected by the forum algorithm- https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5095156.0
The people you are adding your trust list will be DT 1 for you.
The people DT 1 add to their trust list will be DT 2 for you.
If you have no custom trust list, you will trust the Default Trust member.

<…> 1. If someone gives you a negative trust, can you fight back like proving yourself correct and removing the negative trust from your profile.
If you receive negative trust, then the only way for that to be removed is to appeal to the person who gave it to you. Nobody else can remove it. If you believe that you the negative trust in uncalled for, you can open a thread on Reputation to get the opinions of other forum members and to defend your case in public. This may or may not benefit your case, as other may chip in to defend either party.

Note that the linked image in the OP is a yellow trust flag, and not a trust rating. One may open a flag and not leave negative rating, or vice-versa. Flags are a newer feature, and are intended to give more visibility and warning when there is a substantial risk of losing economic assets when dealing with the flagged person, as per the criteria of the person who created that the flag and those that support it.

Quote
2. what advantage you get if you give someone a negative trust?
The idea behind it is to leave on the profile feedback and rating in accordance to what one considers to be a likely possibility of losing money or being scammed by the negatively rated person. It stands as a warning, which should be read in detail in the Feedback (some negative ratings are unsubstantial retaliation comments, which are not really the core intent of the system).

Ratings given by DTs (Default Trust) weigh more visually, since they affect the Trust counters on the profiles. Their feedback lists under Trusted Feedback. Feedback provided by non-DT (our outside your personal Trust network if you have one) does not have impact on the Trust counters, but you never know if those non-DT members may become DT one day, and thus conform part of the Trust counter values.

To put it simply, you can. Keep in mind though that a negative trust given to you by someone can only be removed by that same person.

2. what advantage you get if you give someone a negative trust?

I can't say you get "advantage" from it. It's a feedback system that shows others what they might be dealing with. It's like giving a 2 star rating to a restaurant you dislike. It serves as a warning.

you can retaliate back but like what I said if it is not no need to worry, and if the reason is not valid.
This is poor advice. Someone leaving you a negative rating is a not a good reason to leave them a negative rating back. If I don't trust someone because of something they did, that does not mean I myself am untrustworthy and deserving of negative ratings. In fact, leaving frivolous retaliatory ratings is usually the kind of behavior of we have come to expect from scammers. Honest users tend to appeal against it and state their case factually, not just go in guns blazing with retaliation.

Note that the linked image in the OP is a yellow trust flag, and not a trust rating.
To expand on DdmrDdmr's already spot-on answer, in the cases of trust flags you don't need the person who left it to remove it like you do with trust ratings. If you can convince enough DT members that the flag is incorrect, they can vote to oppose it. If more or equal numbers of DT members vote to oppose rather than support this type of flag, it will not longer be visible on your profile.

Generally if you won't be using Bitcoin as a marketplace the trust system will be useless for you since it won't affect your daily life here in the forum. Although the trust system (the one where you get positive and negative trust) is mainly used in trading in the forum it doesn't mean that trading badly or being part of a scam is the only way you'll get tag on. Members who plagiarized content, shill posts, as well as abuse the merit system do also get tag so if you think that you can do anything you want since you aren't trading in BCT then think again. Following the rules we have here in the forum is the only way you can assure yourself that you won't get a negative trust from a DT member, so I advice that you read them.

First you need to know now trust system has two parts as well, flags and feedback both are completely different.

You will get such warning only if you have active red flags and which are supported by others so flags mean no personal hate and feedback won't work,so if someone create flag against you for no reason then you can ask people to oppose them.

To remove your negative feedback you need to convince the person who gave you the negative trust that is the only way.

If you think that the person is not trusted enough then you can give negative feedback so other users can be saved from getting scammed. No advantage for you!

Yes most definitely if you get a negative trust you can appeal if you feel it was unjust and if you can prove yourself to be correct it can be lifted.

Quote

The more recognised negative trust any one can get and it holds water are those giving out by DT's. and this guy's has a good deal of reputation before being chosen. So other than self satisfaction and love for the forum there are no other gain attached to it -its a call to duty-

Ask the negative trust sender. For example, I give you negative trust then only me can remove the negative trust I give to you. It is your responsibility and you should be careful not to get red trust. The advantage you get is reputation, if you successfully give neg trust to scammers and more then you'll have good reputation in busting scam projects and scammer people same with rules violators.

If you got red trust from someone. Obviously you can fight to prove you a legit/you are not a scammer. And you can also ask the opinion of other DT members. If any DT sees the reason is not enough they can counter the previous feedback with giving positive/neutral trust.
But I don't think a DT member will tag anybody without a valid reason.

If I give someone red trust, Personally I don't think about my advantage. I think these two things
1. If any person made any mistake then red trust can aware about it.
2. People will be aware of the person, and avoid all things that he promotes. And thus people will not lose their money.

Red trust is for scammer and forum rule breakers only, (based on Theymos).  But sadly some of DT(Default Trust) are using it for personal hate and red tagging people who do wrong things that is not scamming or forum rule breaking.

1) Yes! you can fight back and prove that you are not scammer but, somehow even if you proven yourself that you are legit some DT will not delete the feedback or will not change it considering that it's what they think and it's their personal choice to tag you.
2) Helping the forum to fight scammers, and making this forum better.

Personally as a DT, Giving feedback is hard since you should make sure that your decision is correct and the decision I make is for forum not just for what I feel.

Red trust is for scammer and forum rule breakers only
Users who break the rules should primarily be reported to the moderators to have their posts deleted or receive a temporary or permanent ban, rather than trying to enforce the rules via the trust system. There is a little overlap, for example users who link to malware will often receive red trust as well as being banned, but the majority of offenses such as plagiarism, spam, ban evasion, etc., should be reported and not left red trust.

Unfortunately the second part of your statement is correct, and red trust is often being used as a weapon against non-scammers.

So as long as you're not violating any rules in the forum you won't get one right? But what will happen if you have one? Aside from having a red trust and a negative image to other users, what's the disadvantage of it? And another question, if someone had violated a rule, do you just suddenly get a red trust without prior notice?
