Some people hold their crypto assets on exchanges, it is very dangerous, previously many exchanges have been hacked.
I advise You should keep your crypto assets in your personal wallet because the exchange is not safe.

Embarrassed There is always risk, however most of them using bypases or work in a legal gray area and this exposes users to great risks. By obtaining all the necessary licenses and adapting the infrastructure to the requirements of the regulators, exchanges will ensure both business security and reliable access to different forms of pay-in and pay-out on the platforms.

Great market for that is Thaland since they are one of the few countries which have adopted all the necessary crypto regulations in 2019, including issuing security tokens, both for trading with STO and for issuing the STO, Digital Asset Business License, License for Cryptocurrency Broker, License for Cryptocurrency Dealer, and Cryptocurrency Exchange license by the Thai Ministry of Finance. working with relevant authorities including the Bank of Thailand, and the Securities and Exchange Commission, will uphold the law and maintain maximum quality of service for crypto users. Hope other countries will also follow up with regulating crypto market.

Damn, thanks for the information, I'm not even aware that shapeshift get hacked before, the best way to avoid this is never trust any exchange no matter how secured they are, hackers are always advancing, do not leave funds or coins on any exchanges

Yes still the best way is to use cold wallets. Stay way out from online.

If we store money in exchanges then we should be prepared for a mentality, because the entire exchange in this market can be hacked at any time. Even the best exchange like Binance is still hacked in 2019. It is best to store all altcoins and bitcoin in a cold wallet.

It means that there is no secure system and website because even the more secure like binance was experienced hacking and many exchanges site too.  So once your money is in the crypto exchange make sure that is safe  because anything will possible to happen like losing of your money.

I don't think we need another thread about hacked exchange listing, because there are more than enough thread already available in this forum. If you search, you will find them. Though Altsbit exchange hacked new information for me, I had no idea about that and this is the first time I am hearing about this exchange! All those hackers are a curse for the world, I wish COVID-19 takes them!

The truth is that, there will even be further hacks, either today or tomorrow, nobody knows.
This is why it is advisable for everyone to keep their assets (especially i large $) on paper or trezor ledger wallets.

The centralized exchange or decentralized exchanges are not the best place to store your digital assets.

Binance is a very good exchange, no doubt here and I like it most. But to be honest, Binance is not secure enough. They had several hack attacks! That's why no one should store their coin on Binance for a long time! Kucoin, Bittrex is fetter exchange in privacy and security! Though I would discourage anyone from holding crypto assets on exchanges!

No exchanges are really secure, they can be attacked by someone. And Binance was actually hacked in 2019 and hackers stole over $ 35 million. But Binance has done a good job, they have refunded all their investors. And no one complained about it, if other exchanges were hacked, I think they would have collapsed

Of course, exchanges are only for day-to-day trading or short-term trading, so if I have a large asset, I never keep it on the exchange because it's too risky in my opinion, and a cold wallet is a safe place for me to hold some valuable crypto.

Of course the exchange will have a difficult time and maybe for now they are more alert and stronger in their handling.

This is good information, OP i just hope that you can try to add or create another column to be used for the list of the dex that has ever got hacked by scammer. I have seen some dexs in the past were getting hacked too. It's really important to make the newcomers aware of this.

Woooh, damn Mt. Gox with a whooping 850k bitcoins.
If that will be sold by now then I bet there will be a huge way that will come.

There are so many names. I just realized some of them are using like a phishing scheme.
Almost the same name as the known exchanges like Youbit. (or is it just spelled wrong? [Yobit])

For the first time I hear about the bij Altsbyt.
It is amazing how much money was stolen, sending half of the total number of bitcoins and half of the volume of several altcoins.
It is noteworthy that the exchange has already returned 50% of the assets by the user.

If you look at this list, you can see that exchanges were most frequently hacked in 2019, which was the most successful year for hackers. I am curious how much exhcange will be affected this year. But the only thing is clear, no matter how banal it sounds, the best wallet is your wallet, no trust for exchange

Exchanges can never be a good place to store your coin. You may get stuck with hacking, rules and regulations of exchanges. It's better to use non custodial wallet or software wallet always.
This is a good list but as far as I can remember, someone else had made a list too. If I can find, I will share here.

You should be more worried about theft from inside jobs at exchanges as opposed to external, actual, hacks. The biggest losses on your list were simply thieves as opposed to security issues

The average large exchange will definitely be the target of hackers to break into his money and therefore it is very risky too if you keep assets too long on the exchange.
But I have never felt that whether the assets that were hacked will be compensated by the exchange or will lose it all?
Software wallet or cold wallet which is safer in my opinion because it has a private key that I keep safely.

I never heard about altsbit exchange but hey that's quite a lot of money hacked. So many exchanges were getting hacked we should really not make as a personal wallet in exchange because it can hack anytime if the hackers can access the security.

Exactly my friend. Hackers have stolen a lot of money, That is why I am telling people that do not trust the exchange, just trade and make a withdrawal

maybe this is true, but for now there are some exchangers who have improved their quality to ensure the security of assets stored on their platforms. This is to safeguard the security of their users' assets, such as yobit and binance that have grown and prove that they really deserve to be good exchangers. a few days ago I saved my assets in yobit exchangers and it was safe without any hacking. and now binance is proving that they are the best exchange by acquiring CMC. it might just be a dark period for some exchanges. and a little information that there is still a dangerous exchange if you store your assets there, namely probit. The security of this exchange is still in doubt because there are no reviews that say there is security.

This list contains the names of almost all major exchanges. Which gives everyone a message. Never hold your any assets on any exchange. If you wish to trade, you will have to deposit and withdraw the coins in your wallet. Exchanges are safe until major incident occur. So it is best to hold in your wallet to avoid any major damage.

That is true, sentralized exchange aren't safe at all. We just rely on the developer of the exchange for all our asset. We just hope they do the best thing to keep their platforms are safe so as we can trust the platform fully. Or maybe if there is the bad thing come they developer of the platform can replace our loses like binance exchange did a year ago.

Actually, to choose a wallet for our crypto are depend on our intention. I mean, if you choose long term holding or long term investment then you are require as a media to hold your crypto and that is a good thing to do. But if you just choose for short term investment including you are daily trader then an exchange wallet is the solution for you, you can't use hardware wallet to do that.

I advise You should keep your crypto assets in your personal wallet because the exchange is not safe.
Throughout the small history in this market we have seen many hacks and when the shit show in MT Gox happened it was clear that storing your coins in exchanges is not the best idea as every year you hear about an exchange hack and till now over a billions dollars worth of coins are lost to hackers and then if you tally the amount of coins lost to scammers the amount will be staggering.

Nice topick but some information need correction. For example - Cryptopia Jan 2019 1,675 ETH. But Cryptopia lost much more funds for sure, they didn't show clear statistic but this exchange is in liquidation process at the moment. We have different information but in general Cryptopia lost more than 25 million $ coz of that.

It's far better to pay for the transaction fees every time you deal with your trading activities than to risk your assets by placing it inside the exchange.
By seeing that statistics everything is possible and in order to take care of your investment it's really best to always have a personal wallet where you
can keep your assets with your own securities. Whatever happens it's you who are in charge to your assets securities.

Is so much risk to keep funds on exchange platform. But some exchange are storing majority of their funds on cold wallet that is not accessible by any external body. So if the exchange experience any hacking, it will be just few funds left on the exchange but the reserve will be kept safe.

This is really a long list and I just got wind of exchanges which I never knew were hacked, thanks for this information. From the list I saw top exchanges thus showing that even they (that is top exchanges) are not free or safe from hacks neither is users assets secured; this yet goes to prove that no matter the exchange, funds should never be stored on them. Since we are responsible for our decisions which also reflects on our assets that is to say we ought to take caution by storing the assets on personal wallets.

Good list, but we should all know this that anything that is hackable would be hacked, people need to understand this, I have seen people losing their stored BTC on their laptop because their system was hacked. So apart from not using exchange for your wallet, always look for the best solution out there to store your Bitcoin

The case of hacking exchange is indeed one of the risks in Crypto World. In that list we see some of the biggest well-known exchanges. See? nothing is really safe, so provide the best possible protection, use all authentication. This hacking case also affects price movements, following data on the exchange hacking case in 2019 and its impact on the market.

This article also useful, this is my reason for using trusted exchanges, because they will surely be responsible for cases that harm the user, such as hacking. They are trying to return user funds.

This only shows that all crypto exchanges are vulnerable to hacking whether they have security protocol or not. Hacking softwares are getting sophisticated and those hackers will always find a way how to penetrate their system. They will try again and again until they got in, after all, that's their job. So they will not stop until they got what they needed. So crypto users should understand that no matter what type of exchange he is using to store his coins, top, middle or small, famous or never heard of, all of them have the same vulnerability.

According to the list, the hacking cases are increasing from 2011 to current years. We can see above, in 2019, there are 13 hacking cases. It has been more than doubled from the previous year (6 cases). It shows that the number of cases is increasing rapidly lately. This is a warning for all exchanges to improve their security.

The number of cases in each year based on the list:
1. 2011 = 2 cases
2. 2012 = 2 cases
3. 2013 = 2 cases
4. 2014 = 5 cases
5. 2015 = 4 cases
6. 2016 = 3 cases
7. 2017 = 3 cases
8. 2018 = 6 cases
9. 2019 = 13 cases
10. 2020 = 1 cases (the temporary number of cases so far)

*One of the factors why the number of hacking cases can increase significantly in 2019, is about the number of exchanges. The security level on each exchange should be different, so it is potentially to attack by hackers.

10. 2020 = 1*
Thanks, bro. It's updated already.  Wink

Going through this list saddens me alot, not because of alots of money have been stolen in cryptocurrency sector but because the whole security breach is against the core functions and nature of blockchain. Any platform that has blockchain behind it was supposed to have an additional layer of security that cannot be tampered with but seeing exchanges being hack with each passing day suggest otherwise. I hope exchanges will employ more stronger security infrastructures inorder to leave no loopholes for these scammers to prey on no more. This hack here and there is tainting this sector bad as new potential investors are always skeptical with their fear being exchange are not safe.

Hopefully there are no more cases of exchangers being hacked again in the future because it can damage the reputation of the cryptocurrency market in the eyes of investors. It seems impossible because hackers will always try to steal coins from other people but if exchangers continue to improve their security, I think there will be a reduction in the number of exchangers hacked

After checking this list my question is

Can anyone list down the exchanges which have not been hacked till now and what security measures that these exchanges have installed to prevent hacks.

I think most exchanges listed here got hacked because it was an insider job.

Thank you for this very valuable information. indeed it is very dangerous if we store the assets we have in the exchange where we make an exchange. but all that might be a limit on the number of transactions we do. if the number of transactions that we do exceeds the face value of $ 200, maybe moving our assets to a personal wallet is the right choice

Like being a habit. This means we must be careful. It's good if all assets are not stored on the exchange. Save in Trezor or offline wallet. Another way to choose a stock exchange that is convincing and widely used. Install security such as GA or AUTHY.

Of all the exchanges that I've seen so far, Poloniex is probably the safest to bet base on that history. 97 BTC 6 years ago was probably nothing compared to other hot exchanges right now. It's probably second to LocalBitcoins. Though exchanges are not that safe, we still have few options to trade cryptocurrency right now and my tops are Poloniex and Kucoin for the security.

Mt.Gox ExchangeMar 2014850,000 BTC
Mt.Gox ExchangeJun 20112,643 BTC

2 for Mt.Gox?
Sorry but I was not into cryptocurrency yet when this happened.

So it's like the 1st one was just a beta test of the hack or scam or whatever they call it now.
And then they completed it @2014?
One hell of a large amount if calculated now. But I think they have already sold some of it and it they might have not much anymore.
How much could this be at that time? Is there an exact date?

Edit:
2014
Quote
February One of the largest bitcoin exchanges, Mt.Gox, suspended withdrawals citing technical issues. By the end of the month, Mt. Gox had filed for bankruptcy protection in Japan amid reports that 744,000 bitcoins had been stolen. Months before the filing, the popularity of Mt. Gox had waned as users experienced difficulties withdrawing funds.
February 1st American newspaper The Chicago Sun-Times accepts payment in bitcoin for subscriptions.
February 10th-12th Problems with transactions in several big stock exchanges. Bitcoin price decreased to USD $600 (a historical 30% decrease).

Excellent! Now I have some information before I entered in this forum. Others exchange still in suspicion but in Binance risk fee between all centralized exchange. After last time hacked, Binance exchange refund all money. I know still some exchange didn't hacked, isn't means that this exchange is secure.

Im wondering how much was recovered on these hack or were able to get from the thieves?

I think the unsafe can be a system of exchanges. For blokchain, I think it's still very safe. Unless for example you have a key and sed blockchain has been stolen. So mistakes seem to be in you.

Of course, more hackers will get from the results of hacks and therefore very risky if you store too many assets on the exchange, if the exchange funds have been stolen in large amounts of course this can affect the price of hackers can sell it as they like and they just steal easily in a short time.
Every exchange will have vulnerability to hackers, so they must be more careful in storing assets.

It means that there is no secure system and website because even the more secure like binance was experienced hacking and many exchanges site too.  So once your money is in the crypto exchange make sure that is safe  because anything will possible to happen like losing of your money.

The best is to hold assets on exchange just long enough so you can finish your tasks, than move back out from online.

This is good information, OP i just hope that you can try to add or create another column to be used for the list of the dex that has ever got hacked by scammer. I have seen some dexs in the past were getting hacked too. It's really important to make the newcomers aware of this.

Totally agree. A safe environment will contribute to the growth of the crypto community.

Its true blockchain is safe and if your assets are offline you have nothing to worry about. Just keep your seed ''under the pillow''

Yes interesting data. Blockchain itself is safe but exchanges need to do more on security also holders need to store most of assets in cold wallets! Many of exchanges could not recover attacks!

This is a good resource, I never thought there was this many. Mt.Gox was the only exchange I have known who became bankrupt after they got hacked. I never knew there was the first incidence before it got hacked. After that whenever those exchanges became victim to hacking activities, the price of bitcoin will suddenly fall in a dramatic way until now. The only chances we can stop those decrease meant of price whenever this event happened, is to follow what has Binance did when they got some sort of hacking in their exchanges. they successfully recovered the victim's funds.

Some people hold their crypto assets on exchanges, it is very dangerous, previously many exchanges have been hacked.
I advise You should keep your crypto assets in your personal wallet because the exchange is not safe.

This is terrifying.  It almost as saying all the exchanges have been hacked in one way or the other.  The list is just too long, come to think of the fact that Binance has been hacked. It means other exchanges are not safe as well. Bottom line is for individuals to keep ones assets safe.

Many exchanges cant afford great security protection or just don't care for safe environment. The best way is to stick with the strongest exchanges and do as much is possible by your own to make safe place for your assets!

Nice topick but some information need correction. For example - Cryptopia Jan 2019 1,675 ETH. But Cryptopia lost much more funds for sure, they didn't show clear statistic but this exchange is in liquidation process at the moment. We have different information but in general Cryptopia lost more than 25 million $ coz of that.
 https://www.coindesk.com/hacked-exchange-cryptopia-discloses-estimate-of-stolen-crypto

I think this guy just mentioned about 1600+ ETH but it would be total 16 million worth of various cryptocurrencies. Yeah cryptopia did not mentioned regarding how much dollar’s stolen but Dentacoin(DCN) is very affected, this coin trading volume was big in exchange, a few billions tokens are got hacked. Even though a few new projects are so much affected those are just listed in cryptopia exchange.

Damn, looking back the Mt. Gox really the worst cryptocurrency exchange hacks with 850k BTC. Nothing could surpass that amount and when I saw Binance on that list with 7k BTC loss, really nothing is safe in the internet.

Damn, looking back the Mt. Gox really the worst cryptocurrency exchange hacks with 850k BTC. Nothing could surpass that amount and when I saw Binance on that list with 7k BTC loss, really nothing is safe in the internet.
My Friend, there is nothing secure, we should just take precaution. If someone can avoid being hacked, then why do these companies lose so much money and reputation?

Newer research found that some of those hacking were done by the mt.gox themselves. They were hiding the users coins and filling for a bankruptcy. Mt.gox ended a scam. Mintpal too was closed after the 2nd hack. Though the site let users to withdraw their funds, some accused the site of not letting them withdraw.

When binance hacked last year many people was shocked that exchange is very secure so that's why many exchange choose binance but this prove that there is no secure in online because what ever you have it possible to compromised by the other people or hacker.

I hope there is no exchanges sites will hack because funds of the traders will possible to lose so please secure your money once your coins is in the exchange.

Oh my god I am so old, I remember almost all of them. I am going to be honest I do not remember bitcoin7 hacking but to be honest I do not remember hearing about bitcoin7 at all in general as an exchange, like some of the ones here.

However I remember from bitcoinica to this day, it feels like its been just yesterday but the reality is its been almost 8 years. All of them were very very important of course but the most important one will always be mt.gox one because that literally destroyed the whole crypto world for a while, think about like 10 million bitcoins all stolen right now, all gone and nobody spends it and its basically locked and gone, do you know how much it would affect the whole world? We are talking about something as big as binance+bittrex+coinbase all getting hacked together at the same time if it was today.

Decentralised exchanges will always top these centralized exchnage due to high level of security Dex has over cex. If these exchanges upgraded their system to enable users have custody of their funds auxh hacks won't take effect on the exchanges.

And this is really huge number, fact is anything made by humans shouldn't be 100% trusted as there would be ups and downs but learn to accept anything even the one that claims to be the head can disappoint someday. It's really a great loss but glad some was able to pay investors. Good for that.

That is why I have never store crypto assets for the long term on an exchange because there have been many cases of theft, it is better to store them in a personal wallet. There is no exchange that can guarantee 100% security, it's just that they keep trying to make users comfortable using that.

That is an amazing share. Just make a total of all the stolen BTC and you will see it's worth more than trillions in fiat currency.

The first question that strikes to mind is, from where the hell this much money came into crypto market. No wonder why market capitalisation is so strong in the second world.

This will even grow further and will hold on to a inflation process thus making it stronger market.

Yes, off course OP its good information for those who think holding money into an exchange is best way.

well from some hacks that often occur in several exchanges that's why I always transfer the tokens that I have on the exchange to a personal wallet because I don't want that to happen to me, keeping in a personal wallet is safer than exchanging

Dex are good but the problem with them are the lacks of improvement. How many decentralized exchange were succesful on creating liquidity and volume you can nams only few. But centralized exchange has advantage over them since a lot of users like high volume on trading. But the sad fact remains that these cex has been not safe from breach. Even Binance has been hacked with lots of fund considering its one of the top most exchange.

Damn, thanks for the information, I'm not even aware that shapeshift get hacked before, the best way to avoid this is never trust any exchange no matter how secured they are, hackers are always advancing, do not leave funds or coins on any exchanges
hackers are always advancing - that's totally right dude
don't you ever hold funds on exchange and/or hot wallets
there won't be anything more safe than paper wallet or cold one

It is the main reason why we should not use a exchange as a wallet. People think that it is safe to just put their cryptocurrencies in exchanges but they do not think the risks that they can face. This is proof that even reputable exchanges can be hacked so be careful on choosing an exchange because of the risks and the possibilities of losing our money.

if you are in the crypto field you have been aware of hacking scamming and protect yourself from hacking. There is a list of plenty of exchange that has been hacked like.
2019 DragonEx exchange
2019 Gatehub exchange
2019 Binance exchange
2019 Upbit exchange
2019 Bitpoint exchange
2019 Bitrue exchange
2018 Bithumb exchange
2018 Bancor exchange
2018 Zaif exchange
Dec 2017 YoBit exchange
I suggest you store only a small amount of funds in exchange and put your 90% fund in a digital hardware wallet or if you don't afford wallet you can store your fund in Decentralised wallet which gives you access to your private key.

Yes, absolutely right, this is something that everyone must do to not lose the assets that we already have, and what you do is very safe and I also agree with what you are doing, because it is really safe in general.

With good regulate we definitely improve safe environment for users. Good example is Thailand as Thailand is one of the few countries to have adopted all the necessary crypto regulations in 2019, including issuing security tokens and trading with them, digital asset business license, license for Cryptocurrency Broker, License for Cryptocurrency Dealer, and Cryptocurrency Exchange license by the Thai ministry of finance. That is why Crypto Tron Exchange and Shop is also based in Thailand.

Nice post, it will be a great help for everyone who is planning to exchange their assets, it will warn them to try those listed above and try another legit one. Always remember that there are always scam websites in this crypto world, so always be wise on choosing the right one, always do a research befote trying the websites, see the reviews and look for the positive feedback, if you know that most of the comments are positive then for sure it is legit and a good website.

Recently, Hacker stole $250K from decentralized Bitcoin exchange Bisq. So not only centralised exchanges are the target of the hackers but even the much promoted Bisq that everyone wanted to use because of it's decentralisation has fallen to the arms of the hackers as well. So this is a reminder to everyone that we are not safe.

Actually holding money at centralized exchanges is risky and I only use the money I have invested to keep it. I think no exchange is secure at this time and it's best to find a personal wallet to keep. In addition, I also use additional hardware wallets to ensure the best because this is a very popular way in this market. Of course, not all exchange are bad, but it's best to be more careful.

well from some hacks that often occur in several exchanges that's why I always transfer the tokens that I have on the exchange to a personal wallet because I don't want that to happen to me, keeping in a personal wallet is safer than exchanging
Yes, absolutely right, this is something that everyone must do to not lose the assets that we already have, and what you do is very safe and I also agree with what you are doing, because it is really safe in general.
Actually holding money at centralized exchanges is risky and I only use the money I have invested to keep it. I think no exchange is secure at this time and it's best to find a personal wallet to keep. In addition, I also use additional hardware wallets to ensure the best because this is a very popular way in this market. Of course, not all exchange are bad, but it's best to be more careful.

yeah cex exchange doesnt allow you to have your private so they totally control your funds  and even the known safest exchange got hacked too not once or twice but many times now .

just like to thanks for the op for putting this list so that people can be aware if what exchange are not on the hot list or the ones that being targeted by hackers the most.  storing assets on a stand alone alone is better ,  hardware wallets are optional too .

Some people hold their crypto assets on exchanges, it is very dangerous, previously many exchanges have been hacked.
I advise You should keep your crypto assets in your personal wallet because the exchange is not safe.

List updated...

I never expect that hacking has been this much already and what is worst is the latest hacking lost a lot of money "6,929 BTC, 23,210 ETH, 3,924,082 ARRR, 414,154 VRSC & 1,066 KMD". It is too much compare to Binance hacking and it was happened last February 2020 where the price of bitcoin break to 10k$.

And upon checking the Altsbit exchange, it is now displaying the current hacking and the process/steps on how the users can get the refund of their money. This why I really don't like storing money in any exchange as the hackers are always there and what is worst they are targeting big exchanges as they can sure that they can get a lot of money from them. I just hope that it is not an inside job or any fishy announcement that comes from the team behind the project.

If we store coins in exchanges we have to bear in mind that any time any exchange can be hacked. If we store coins in online wallets, anytime it can be stolen by hackers or scammers. That means crypto markets is full of risk. We have to stay here with taking risk. Binance hack didn't imposed any negative impact on crypto market and members of Binance didn't face financial loss.

OP, I read the site that you referred.
Just a suggestion
Since the list entirely came from the site you referred, it would be nice if you could directly link each line of the exchanges that got hacked to the exact part of the site so that people wouldn't scroll down a lot to read the news itself.

I appreciate your advice, I do not think that is possible. Because whenever anyone goes to that website, every time he will lands on the same page.

Actually if you want store your coins in exchange wallet then it's big risk and your wallet can be at anytime. Even other if you want save your coins in online wallet then it will be more risk because many hackers can be attack your wallet. So it's me to best for save all coins in hardware wallet then never possible hack, if you can hide your mail password and wallet private key.

One of them was actually hacked, but some exchanged an Exit scam and blamed the hacker. And those are the small exchanges in this market, if all of them were hacked then I think exchange is not safe enough for us to use and hold cryptocurrency there.

It is not that exchange is not safe, using an exchange is still safe. However, it is not safe to store your funds in exchange which is always the reminder of many trusted users here. And you should only use popular exchanges to avoid gimmicks such as exit scams that you have mentioned.

It is better for us to store money in cold wallets or store them on our computers. It will be a lot safer than exchanges, even Binance was hacked in 2019 and it's the best exchange in this market. So any exchange could be hacked in the future

I'm stay away from crypto almost 1year, the biggest hack last time ive heard is binance, when i read this ive got shock to know Altsbit Exchange, the exchanger ive never heard lost so many crypto in February, thats why i always avoiding saving fund more than a month in exchanger, for me its better to spend some for transaction fee rather than losing all in case the exchanger got hacked

Honestly, it all depends on how well the exchange is dealing with these hacks that matters the most and not IF they got hacked or not.

For example, if one exchange gets hacked and because of that they close shop and do not pay anyone their money back, that is bad, we all know that, however if one exchange gets hacked but still pays everyone their money and covers the expense of being hacked from their own pockets, that is not really all that horrible. This is why I think being hacked could even be more of an advantage to an exchange instead of a curse if they can handle it very well.

Binance reversed a hacking to something great for example, those dudes got hacked but then paid out of pocket and now people love them even more, so they turned it into good marketing.

Crypto exchanges  are not intended to store assets there. It's not just a hack problem, you don't have private keys there. No private keys, assets is not yours.

my eyes hurt seeing the number of stolen assets. Well, if there is a hacker who escaped from the chase, I think the Hacker has become rich now. other than that, every year there are always exchangers who are hacked, and I hope the exchange where I put my assets doesn't experience the same thing. Well, MT. Gox makes me interested. I don't know enough bitcoin assets were stolen there. unfortunately, the price of bitcoin at the time seemed to be less than $ 2k.

Regards,
Denis Lukavačkić

The regulation provides some security against scammers, but not against hackers

It's almost better for save our money in hardware wallet and some strong security wallet( erc20, trust wallet, coinbase) although some wallet will give good safty. Therefore, don't save your money in any exchange wallet then it's your own risk.

According to the list, Bithumb Exchange has the weakest security, since the exchange was hacked 3 times and totally had lost the biggest amount (if we dont count Mt.Gox). Despite all this, the exchange still works... I wonder who has so much trust to Bithumb and why choose to trade there?

every exchange that claims to have very good security certainly still has a gap to be entered by hackers and for that do not ever put your assets in any exchange, hackers are still hanging around and still trying to steal at some exchanges

I believe the exchange is has got good insurance, else, such number of hacks is enough to make it run bankrupt and I guess those who lost fund initially have got a replacement.
However, you never can tell if there will be a serious hack, which will take the exchnage to a point of no return and that is why keeping one's fund on exchnage is not advisable.
When Binance was hacked, it was then I knew no exchange can escape it and the only precaution is to save most fund sin private wallet, most especially hardware wallet.

At this point, I think it's safe to say that no exchange is safe from breaches and hacks.  Even Bitmex gets hack controversies here and there. Binance too. The only good thing with them is that they have a SAFU funds in place to compensate for lost funds. I know people who lost quite a lot during the cryptopia hack over a year ago.  That said, I think it's best to have minimal funds on exchanges at any point in time.

@OP, I want to suggest that you reorganize the thread so that recent hacks come last not first. Like top to bottom. Not bottom to top.

Exactly! Correct you said. Storing funds on exchange is never safe because anytime without any notice it can be hacked.Even some exchange retreat from their service. It's remainds me name of IDAX Last year was exits. So best oftion is holding your crypto is your own personal offline dcentralized wallet.

According to the list, Bithumb Exchange has the weakest security, since the exchange was hacked 3 times and totally had lost the biggest amount (if we dont count Mt.Gox). Despite all this, the exchange still works... I wonder who has so much trust to Bithumb and why choose to trade there?

I believe the exchange is has got good insurance, else, such number of hacks is enough to make it run bankrupt and I guess those who lost fund initially have got a replacement.
However, you never can tell if there will be a serious hack, which will take the exchnage to a point of no return and that is why keeping one's fund on exchnage is not advisable.
When Binance was hacked, it was then I knew no exchange can escape it and the only precaution is to save most fund sin private wallet, most especially hardware wallet.

But if comparing Binance and Bithumb, Binance will never be at point of no return, as it has created SAFU fund and transfer part of Binance profit there. In case Binance got hacked again, they will replace every users loss.

In case you are interested or dont know what SAFU is, here is the link https://www.binance.vision/glossary/secure-asset-fund-for-users.

And it goes on and on, Indeed i must say thank you and wish a lot of people will come across it therefore knowing that no matter how advanced, attractive or good an exchange is, it is still susceptible to hacking which is really disturbing. In essence, saving of funds on exchanges is a very very bad idea and this list of hacked exchanges just proved it right. Nevertheless, even at this, one thing stands out and that is, despite all these hacks, the crypto space is still moving forward which shows that it is solving a pressing human need, which is the advancement of cryptocurrencies.

The level at which exchanges are been hacked shows that any exchange can be hacked irrespective of the level of the security. We all need to be careful the way we keep our assets on exchanges.

I never had this kind of information. If all information is right than looks like every top exchange got the hacking test. After any protect you took always hack problem still exists, we only safe in blockchain. We're not safe any more if we send money to exchange where we have no control.

Thanks for information. We know that exchange hack in the last 2 years has been a common matter but it has put huge negative pressure on crytomarkets. When exchange hack news comes, cryptomarket got dump but only binance exchange hack didn't put any impact on price.

OKEx was hacked in 2017 and hacked 200 Bitcoins within one hour from a German IP. We know 200 Bitcoin was around $4M of that time in value. In my experience, most of the exchanges has been hacked either once or twice. It is a regret that Exchange hack is now a common fact and investors trade now in risk.

indeed it is very dangerous if we save too much money that we save in exchange. because we cannot fully hold and control the assets we have. Moreover, the funds we save are exchanged above $ 10,000. This is of course very high risk to be hacked

As far as I know etherdelta should be included on the list caused by it's a DNS hack. ED lost nothing caused by this hack but people were being fallen to the phishing that already created by scammer us ED DNS.
I remember when okex gets hacked and this exchange is doing good right now with its security

The list is very nice to remind all crypto users not to store their coins in exchanges. Also, it shows that even top exchanges like BNB can't avoid hacking incidents from scammers.

And if all crypto exchanges will create their own SAFU (Secure Asset Fund for Users) account like what Binance have, at least in case something happens, like hacking, malware attacks or any of that kind, they are ready to compensate their clients and will not be bankrupt in the process.

Very common to every traders not to store that much investment from any exchange. It's better to keep your money inside your own wallet and only store amount of assets that you need to use whenever you do your trading. The risk is too high as mentioned since every hackers are eyeing to any opportunities that will lead them to penetrate the exchange.

After all that you have said is true and many of us for whatever reason have left our crypto assets in exchanges. It is undoubtedly a danger to hold crypto assets on exchanges and at any time we may lose our life time income. I warn myself and I hope everyone will be alert.

This is really serious. These cases also keeps me thinking how safety it is to keep funds on exchanges since even those one never expected to get hacked always get hacked. It's really wise one keeps his or her funds on several exchanges and not just one and it's more best one also safe via fiat to avoid getting hot totally. This keeps me scared the more but how good it is that some exchanges so recover by paying back investors while some doesn't.

And we would like to see adoption, but we don´t have infrastructe for it, exchanges are being hacked on they are scamming their users so easily, just like BCNEX for example. We need to build strong and safe infrastructure that would attract more people into this dangerous sector.  Wink

many places of exchange have experienced cases like this, they only see a momentary profit so that places of exchange like BCNEX scam traders who have assets there, whereas if they can be a place of exchange that has a long time then they will have a good reputation and can get many advantages of traders.

what adoption ? i thought we are only talking about exchabge hacks here . also being hacked are different from being scammed but i believe there are scam exchange that will lie and say that they have been scammed  .

the infrastracture that your saying is like a tool right ? indeed we need that so that we can spread awareness and warn others if we saw a shady activity going on on an exchange

It means that there is no secure system and website because even the more secure like binance was experienced hacking and many exchanges site too.  So once your money is in the crypto exchange make sure that is safe  because anything will possible to happen like losing of your money.
Right, that is the risk. Make sure we choose an exchange that is truly responsible and guarantees consumer protection. Some of the top global exchanges that have been hacked are committed to compensating for the case. The lesson for all of us is not to carelessly store assets in the wallet exchange, especially if there is any doubt.

For this reason I'm afraid to use new cryptocurrency exchange. Here almost all exchange has name but few exchange has name twice. You will find out your fault when your exchange hacked. New exchange has idea about it, this is the reason investor can't trust new exchange. For trading new exchange is also bad.

Everyear there is millions of dollars was lose because of the hacker and it is possible that market will crush because what if the hacker sell the coins they get.

Every exchange sites need to be aware on how their system will become safe to the hackers because many traders also losing theie funds because of this . The team of exchange is responsible for that becuase if they system is not strong to keep safe their traders Im sure people will leave not trade there.

hacking is not only in new markets but big markets there are also some large markets also lose money including binance, therefore we must always be careful and do not store assets in the market because it is very risky better save to personal wallet

Even famous platforms get hack, it is never advisable to store your money online even if it is a well-known platform, hackers will surely find ways to infiltrate platforms. Imagine million dollars have been stolen from different platforms since crypto had started and the majority is from small platforms which is an easy target for hackers.

Lots of money have been really lost due to the hacks and I'm sure these hacks are perpetrated by the same group of people, one group might have hacked one or two exchanges. The hack dawned on me when almighty Binance was hacked too because I was believing the hack only affects the less exchanges, but then exchanges always advise their customers to set up two factor Authenticator against theft from their wallets, how they manage to go down when attacked is still confusing.
It's just best to save funds in non exchange wallets because these hackers don't announce their operations.

if you really want to hold the assets that you have then choose an exchange that already has a big name like binance because even though hackers managed to steal but your assets will be replaced by the exchange

Thank you for creating a hacked exchange list. at least this is a warning for us to be more careful in choosing an exchange in conducting transactions or investing. therefore to invest coins in an exchange, then choose an exchange that has not been hacked and then withdraw all crypto assets from the exchange and keep it in your personal wallet.

Yes, many hold their coins unwanted for more profit, so it gets caught in the eyes of hackers, which has a lot of potential for hacking coins. So the coin market should always be running.

Well I store crypto on a hot wallet linked to a debit card - Blackcatcard. What’s a euro card only with a hot crypto wallet linked to it. As I’m super concerned about safety of my money, I was looking for smth I can sure about.  This card is of European financial institution so it seems quite trustworthy to me. I know that it is widely said not to trust hot wallets, because they can be hacked easily. But here it is linked to a bank debit card with a lot of degrees of protection.
As for conditions they offer good exchange rates, all transactions via a mobile app. I don't use this card to often to withdraw money or make transfers, online to pay online, for this reason can't say anything about the fees but it has a nice bonus program If your monthly balance more than 300 euros and card turnover at least 200 euros, the interest on the balance is 2, 2 percent  + 0,1 percent cashback on purchases.

According to this list, there are more and more hacks happening, there are 14 cases in 2019, the top exchanges were also hacked. I hope 2020 will happen less.

It's really metter of sorrow for them who lost their assests. Although hacking isn't a new incedent in Crypto industry and its known to all that, fund isn't safe in exchanges wallets but it's not possible to trade without putting money on exchange. but it's really disappointing when its top exchanges are being hacked. Hope security system would be update soon to prevent this kind of incedents

I have been a victim from this hacked cases and yesterday i can get my assets through converting it into the ORN and then withdraw em all from the kucoin.

It looks like this will need a very long time process as the total hacked that happened with kucoin was 3 times more than binance.
Kucoin was also making all of coins on its exchange sites to do that swap process for the hacked tokens.

Due to being busy, I could not search about it. But thanks for your information, And of course this is a lesson for newcomers that sometimes it is dangerous to hold crypto assets in the exchange wallet.

It's time for you to update this topic again. Liquid exchange was hacked on 13 November. However, this time the hacker could not take the money. Only users' personal information is taken. Below you can read the blog post of Mike Kayamori CEO Liquid exchange.

FTX might be added (not sure that any hack is confirmed yet).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FTX_(company)#November_2022_crisis_and_bankruptcy

The Wall Street Journal at least wrote something about investigating after hackers.. Roll Eyes
https://www.wsj.com/articles/ftx-is-investigating-a-potential-hack-amid-bankruptcy-filing-11668261070

On the other hand, it can be an easy way to pocket some funds. Who knows.
Only way to prevent this happening is to stop using centralized exchanges altogether..
