Me: Do you accept any online payment method? Tea vendor: No sir, only cash. Me: Why? Tea vendor: I have no idea about online money transactions, I have heard of many scams also, I am afraid too, cash is much safe for me I am doing it for more then 10 years. Me: Oh I see, but do you have bank account? Tea vendor: Yes. Me: Do you have android phone? Tea vendor: Yes (he bring it out from his pocket), here it is sir. Me: If you can allow me, I will install UPI (A platform developed by Indian government for online transaction), through which you can accept payments. Tea vendor: UPI ?? what?? (I explained about the app little bit, after that he was convinced to give it a try, maybe because he has seen me discussing some issues before with my friends on his tea stall, I do not know but there was trust in his eyes for me..) Me: OK now the app has installed and I am paying through it, You will receive an SMS shortly. (I paid him and his phone beeped for a SMS saying, 10INR has been credited to your account balance.) Tea vendor: Oh that was easy, thanks sir. Your next tea will be free from my side, thanks a lot.
After one week...
Me: Things going good? How are online transactions going? Tea vendor: Good sir I have accepted over 50 transactions. (He even tries to bring out his phone to show me, to which I said OK OK..) Me: Do you know about bitcoin? Tea vendor: No sir? Me: I am forwarding some YouTube videos in Hindi, please have a look on them...
Now I am really contemplating about his probable response to bitcoin. I do not want him to accept bitcoin right now as a payment method, simply because it is way much more complicated for him and there is also a risk attached to it. Do you guys any idea about how I should proceed in the matter....

Start slowly by and I mean by mass adoption first. You don't need to rush thing but we need to teach the mass on how bitcoin works in a flash.

Let him watch those given videos and just answer follow-up questions coming from him. You don't have to rush him because it's a matter of business and the guy is good enough to follow those instructions and suggestions that you have given.
Let him understand first the concept of bitcoin and start the interaction and introduction if he already understand that its price is volatile. That guy is grateful to have that UPI installed and sure it will be if there are customers other than you paying him in bitcoin.

Not correct on the price of tea, though I still do think that transaction fees are going to be an issue here. https://www.statista.com/statistics/642694/average-retail-price-of-tea-india/Honestly this is probably going to come up as an issue for the seller of the Tea, because even when you're at the lower lower end of btc fees you're still going to be in the realm of .06-15 cents for trancation fees while still moving bitcoin in an average amount of time. Very tough for someone to go from cash, to anothr medium (which is more or less close to cash, as they're just using a digital cash), and then moving to a COMPLETETLY COMPLETETLY FOREIGN BITCOIN. I without a doubt applaud you're pursuit though, I think it's amazing that you're trying to spread bitcoin to people that are going to use it instead of just speculate with it. Do please update us on his response once he watches the videos on Bitcoin, he'll probably be a bit freaked out at first and that's normal -- people start to question if this is legal or if someone can hack it or something like that. +Merit.

Thanks for you kind words of appreciation. It is always feels good to be appreciated by established members like you. I also thank you about the fact that you considered my post as worthy of merit points. I agree with you on that the most challenging part is transition from cash transaction to blockchain. I have thought to give him some free coins on my next visit (as suggested by above), just to give him some taste of the things he can do with crypto. As far as the network fee is concern, we can suggest him to accept crypto for his long term costumers as weekly or monthly payment instead of daily or multiple times a day. Other than that I think '' BTC accepted'' board on his tea stall will look super cool and may be increase his brand value.

The link you shared shows the price of per kg of unprepared tea. But OP is talking about the prepared cup of tea that are being sold by the stalls on the road side. I'm Indian and we Indians love to stop by roadside and enjoy a cup of tea from our favorite stall (especially during winters). The average price of a cup is ₹10-15 (~ $0.1-0.2) which is roughly equals to the bitcoin network fees. I agree with you on that the most challenging part is transition from cash transaction to blockchain. I don't think most of the tea vendors do business on credit bases but what you are talking do make some sense. I think most of their regular customers are adjoining shop owners and if you can convince him to accept Bitcoin from them then that would surely be something unexpected and brilliant. Other than that I think '' BTC accepted'' board on his tea stall will look super cool and may be increase his brand value.
That's the only relative thing I see happening from this scenario. Adding BTC Accepted board in front of shop will add to his publicity and many tech freaks would pay him visit just for the sake of spending Bitcoin on the cup of tea.

That's actually a pretty good idea -- having customers prepay for a product and doing it in crypto. Though the only way this would work is if his customers have crypto, use crypto, and want to use it with him. We can setup as many merchants as they want, but if no one is actually using crypto as a medium of exchange then we really haven't done anything. Do keep this updated.

I have a 'not so good news' about our beloved tea vendor. Yesterday I went to the location where he usually camps his tea stall, but he was not there. I asked nearby people about him, they told me that three days ago police came and shut down all the vendors because of lock down. I called him but his number is switched off. Lets hope that he is safe and sound where ever he is. I had so many plan for him but for the time being I have to give them some rest. Will update if any progress happens.

True, it is probably too early to offer bitcoin payment solution straight away, because not everyone will be able to handle it well without prior deeper knowledge of bitcoin. I think, it is the time just to spread the word about bitcoin, give an advice to research it, especially to close people, friends and family. Bitcoin is rather attracting as it is, and we see it grows interest naturally. Also, anyone can rename their wi-fi router to Bitcoin. Little steps may lead to massive effect.

You should do the same strategy as you did when you introduce the banking app and sent him Youtube videos that are easy to follow. Just explain how Bitcoin works and its decentralize capabilities that's also an alternative for payments and transaction and much more secure. There's no harm in trying, if he likes it then good. If not then move on.

More than billion people in our country is facing such issues, government not yet given proper guidance to police to deal lockdown so they just do what they want by beating each and every person they see on the street but is that government wants people to die not from corona just from the hunger?

This is really promising. Where exactly does the tea-vendor put up? Whether he can take it to the "Bitcoin Accepted" level or not depends on his location too. I don't think a tea salesman needs a deep study of Bitcoin to work with him. Everything comes with experience. For starters, he can install the Samurai app on his smartphone. There he will get his first SegWit address and will be able to accept bitcoins. After a while, when he gains experience and knowledge, he will be able to run Lightning Network Node. P.S. The most important thing is to interest the tea salesman in Bitcoin.

Hey @squatz1, I am the first guy i guess. In my defense, nope, this was no grave digging for post count. (shrug) I consciously avoid that though I am no idealist..(shrug again) I was just skimming through OPs post history after he started a topic complaining about people's responses.. Just wanted to see where he was coming from about people's responses. Saw this post. I identify with the situation because the location OP claimed in one of his earliest posts is in North India. I was wondering if we could do something about people in similar situation and sent a PM to him. And dude, stop making up rules about "staying within the month". Even the official forum warning is 120 days, you know.. ..Hope you found my explanation satisfactory. Now, you don't need to respond and can just merit my explanation if you find my story inline. Otherwise, I'll assume you are just increasing your post count..LOL..I prefer editing my own post in such cases as a way out. Also, now that i read my post out of context, it totally seems the way you see it.

You seem to be a nice person and interested in the topic at hand -- problem is that most people who flood this community will just spam random shit about random shit just to get their post count. It strikes me as an issue when I see two guys with the same signature and all that come in a row. But honestly you even responding to me takes that away as it seems as if you truly care. So yeah, outside of the context you've included right now -- I'd think that you were just spamming for an extra post. Lots of spam here, so yeah-- I hope ya can see what I went about doing this. Stay safe.

Thanks! I am trying not to be so nice anymore in the face of constant suggestions about the practical world but hey, completely personal issue that.. problem is that most people who flood this community will just spam random shit about random shit just to get their post count. It strikes me as an issue when I see two guys with the same signature and all that come in a row.
I completely understand. The sword cuts both ways though. For example, if i was not wearing a signature, such a post would be considered completely normal in a "reddit" kind of way. Back when wearing signature hadn't become such a "privilege", people were free to talk all kind of random shit. Lately though it has become very political. There is so much drama and accusations about signature spam. It sadly is a reflection of where we are going as a community. Maybe too many of the new accounts join after hearing "you can earn here" rather than the old "you can find cool information and opportunities about bitcoin here". Well, in the present scenario, we cannot blame anyone for trying to earn extra. I hope we can have enough commerce at the forum to benefit everyone.

Heh, you're most likely right when it comes to if you weren't wearing a signature I wouldn't have bothered you. Maybe not though, I get very annoyed when newbs come on here just to up their postcount and just throw up some word salad on the page. Nothing wrong with making an extra buck though. When you can have fun doing what you're doing and be involved in a forum you like, while being rewarded for it, you've gotten the best of both worlds. Best part is that it isn't a chore or a job, just a fun little hobby. Stay safe.
