So I finally managed to make an account on Discord without phone number verification - I guess I maybe just got a lucky Tor exit node that hadn't already been listed as "suspicious" by Discord's internal processes. They did require email verification, so I made a new email address specifically for that purpose. Anyway, I'm in for now, let's hope they don't decide to spring random phone number verification or KYC on me like a centralized exchange would. Wink

Is there any way for people in Discord to "tag" their accounts so we know they belong to the same person as the forum nickname? I see lots of names I recognize, but it would be good to know that these are 100% the people the say they are. I understand the channel owner can create different "roles" within the channel and add people to the roles - such as admins, moderators, etc. Perhaps we could add a role for "Verified Users" and users could post in this thread to confirm the Discord user of the same name is them?

For the record, my Discord ID is 711542178354036786.

Welcome to the server!
If there's interest, sure, we can do that. But the caveat remains, please treat it as fun and public place

I'll link the part of the OP that mentions it. If we do this, I'll probably add further details and warnings.
- We don't verify members. If you see a familiar user there there's no guarantee that it's not an impersonator (if there's interest, I might add a custom role to users that want and link their user here with the Discord server).

I joined this server with my Bitcointalk username. I've never used Discord before, so I'll have to check how everything works there. It's good to have place for some less serious talks Smiley
But even if it's not official Bitcointalk server, I'm also a bit concerned about people with bad intentions who may try to impersonate well known Bitcointalk members...

For the time being don't associate anyone with their Bitcointalk username without verifying yourself until there's an "official" verification process on the Discord server itself. A quick message on the forum could probably alleviate most issues for the time being. There are also certain users which have roles associated with them such as Bitcointalk staff. Those have all been verified.

Yeah,,,thats the best part. Its like a relaxation room for bitcountalk users where they can make some fun and spend quality time atleast. A best place for them who have thrusts of making new community friends.

But even if it's not official Bitcointalk server, I'm also a bit concerned about people with bad intentions who may try to impersonate well known Bitcointalk members...
Agree with you but we can't completely stop them just by avoiding a particular thing. Basically it depends on community users awareness about scammers & fraudsters. Friendship will grow for sure and scammers will do their best to take advantages.

- By popular demand, the server will be used as a general place to hang out, not just for the Halving.
- Well over 100 members so far.
- Currently doing votes on which channels to add next.
- There's less drama than anyone probably expected.
- Discussing how to better communicate/collaborate on Epochtalk.
- Might need to get better at making announcement threads.

It looks like that you invite users to communicate not on this forum but on the your channel? I wonder if theymos likes this idea?
This is somehow related to the delay in starting the Epochtalk?

As far as I know, theymos has given his approval.
The server is a place where people can interact with each other on different subjects. At the moment there are only 2-3 channels but we are still in the beginning.
A own channel for Epochtalk is also on the to-do list.
A verification is also considered, so we can avoid the monkey business in the future.
After being there since day one I can say that I love it now... Smiley

There is no sig spam yet, if the community gets larger and becomes an official bitcointalk channel, I would expect some members to use it as an avenue to promote their businesses. A signature is unlikely, buy we could get spam posts being made just to advertise links.

Guess if this will be become a problem that spam posts being made more and more the Users or the User will get kicked and maybe banned there also !
They already working on some things like Verification that will should solve the problem with bot accounts.
For now there is no problem with Spam or something like that .

For anyone wondering what the Discord was like during the halving event here's some screenshots which captured some of the stand out moments:

Its worth noting that usernames on the Discord depsite their apperance may not be related to usernames on Bitcointalk. Therefore, don't assume a user with the same username on Discord is the same user on Bitcointalk.

Bitcoin party live streams of counters, and participating users

The "timestamp" contest

Which user "BitCryptex#5054" on Discord with the guess "1589225123"  which was only 100 seconds out from the actual time the halving occurred. Therefore, BitCryptex#5054 become the owner of a contest total of  0.019 BTC which was sent by all those who contributed to the amount shortly after the event.

We surpassed 100 users on Discord during the first two days of launch, and we are now quickly approaching 200 total users.

Unfortunately, due to my positioning of the live streams window, it hides the total amount of users online at one point. However, my observation was we reached at least 42 concurrent users online, and as of the time of writing this we currently have 32 users online.

I know Discord isn't all that privacy friendly. There's FOSS software that has all its capabilities and more, just without as nice of a web-interface.
I am not blaming anybody here. It's just an observation and it's not just discord. It's much similar to how communication for bitcoin started via mailing lists. Then as a community developed many users joined IRC.
Popularization calls for simpler solutions I guess. Hence maybe why many users of this open source project are on closed source/proprietary platforms such as Telegram, Slack etc.

But maybe for once, we bitcointalk users could make a difference if we're going to jump to a service with voice chat capabilities for real time communication. How about Mumble? It's FOSS and has voice chat capabilities, along with many open source add-ins.

Anyway, I'm done with my rant. That's something for others to consider maybe.

As of having a communication service preferred by users, I think it'd be nice to tweak SMF software on bitcointalk so it can support adding a username on your profile. I know the capability is already there for messaging software that has by now become irrelevant. Maybe remove AIM, MSN and Yahoo Messanger and replace them with discord, IRC, SLACK, Telegram etc. It'd be fitting to be able to verify your username this way.
