Hi fellow community members,

I am trying to do a little analysis on the matter as mention in the subject. However, I am unable to find anything (a comprehensive study with data) which can help my analysis. I expected a surge in online gaming activities due to the Covid induced lock-down the world is facing right at this moment.

The only thing I am looking for a comprehensive study about the effect of lock-down on online gaming sector. I know a lot of casino owners are pretty frequent in this part of the forum so it will be great if you guys can also share any insight on this subject.

Thanks in advance,
Avikz

I've searched as in-depth as possible to give you a good, detailed answer and I fortunately found a good study you could take a look at:

Studies made by Omer Liss @Optimove

I've also found some articles talking about the effect of lockdown among different countries or states, I think they're pretty useful too:

As far as I understand from these studies, gambling is mostly on the rise (some parts of the world having a quite significant increase) while, interestingly, some groups have actually answered the opposite - so some studies are in contradiction.

Hopefully I was able to retrieve the information you need Grin

Thank you very much Kevin. I have taken a quick glance at the reports and it seems to fit my requirements. I will take a detailed look this weekend. Thanks again!

Here is a daily wagered amount on some of the popular bitcoin gambling sites. You can clearly see that the last 6 months has some spike in daily wagering volume. Though last year in same time had a bit better daily average. Could be several things associated with the volume and still we couldn't explain the influence of lockdown. I have taken the image from https://dicesites.com/graphs and you can play with different variables to get the exact data you need from there.

The spikes from Oct to December looks interesting. Doesn't look like it that was caused by crisis/lockdown. The spikes increase a bit around January (2020) with fewer wager on smaller amounts compared to May — Dec19 (2019). < This could be caused by the crisis

I expected a surge in online gaming activities due to the Covid induced lock-down the world is facing right at this moment.
"Research and Markets" publishes studies 4 times a year that focus purely on online gambling. In the Spring-report there is also the following section:

Quote
1 - COVID-19 Impacts

  • Impact on overall revenues
  • Betting will be hit the hardest
  • The light at the end of the tunnel

I think this might help you. The reports are unfortunately subject to a fee and anything but cheap (access costs around 850€). But there might be other sites which publish details about these reports and may also provide excerpts of them.

At the same time, I also looked at statistics on dicesites.com to see if you could read here that Covid is making crypto online gaming more. But I definitely do not see it that way:

The graph cleary shows that there aren't any spikes in total bets during the lockdown phases in March/April/May. Additionally, compared to December 2019 or January 2019 the number of total bets is way lower.
Could also be related to the second point of the report linked above ("Betting will be hit hardest"). Without wanting to reinterpret too much, I can well imagine that in times of crisis (job security, layoffs, ...) there is not much money left for online gambling.

There probably are more number of people gambling and more number of bets placed but I think the amount would be smaller. With many people losing there job and many fighting to keep their stomach feed, people would be saving anything they have and only gambling with the money they would not mind lose. Gambling certainly is a good past time but people are doing it with lower amount.

Thanks for providing this for us I just knew that online gambling will have an increased during this pandemic, logic tell us that gamblers has more time and casino gamblers will try online casinos and see if they can take their skill to online gambling sites, it's a different experience for them, if there is an increase of gamblers and vaccine is months away we should expect more online gambling coming out.

Great information buddy, thanks for sharing that kind of information, I am also looking for this thing before but I failed on finding the legit and great information about it. As we all now under quarantine, we became into online gambling, there are many people who get attached to it because of being bored at home. We are almost 3 months for this and there are many things happen because of it, there are many changes in the users and reviews on it.

In addition to these articles. And maybe you can use these researches as an RRL for your little analysis.

Online gambling ad impressions almost triple during lockdown
GC survey: gambling in decline under lockdown
Lockdown boredom causes New Zealand online gambling spike

After skimming all the articles, I have found that you can easily google the statistics or data that has "online gambling" with "lockdown" next to it. And most of them tells the same thing which is continuously increasing.

I also cannot find any related research paper with a proper methodology and research instrument used as most of them are just blogs and conclusions/ summary of an existing research that has not been disclosed in public.

I hope some of the indicated articles will help you. Wink

It's a shame that most of these researches don't have a proper research paper for anyone interested to study. It's quite interesting how studies say gambling is on an increase while groups are saying it's the opposite and the graph above shows the wagered amounts are also decreasing (see the wagered sums of this year's first months vs 2019's).

Could also very well depend on what country the research is done into. The mindset of a nation could greatly influence results.

People have different thoughts, mindsets and emotions towards gambling so if there will be research about it, expect that there will be a negative conclusion to it. It is true that there are only researchers who see a worth information about gambling and that is why there are only few studies especially if the society in a specific country doesn't treat gambling as a important subject or topic. For the OP, I think the best way for you to gain more information that you need to finish your research paper is through surveying.

This is good for the community and the whole industry as well, we now know that there is a big shift, the 40% shift from casinos to online casinos is a big number, we'll see a lot of promotion about online gambling, now that many are going or shifting to online gambling.

The Crypto online casinos is still a young market, and casinos should now think of having their own version online.

I think the main reason for not disclosing their research into the masses is privacy and confidentiality of the data they surrendered to the researchers. And since these participants are involve in an online gambling casino in which their money or account maybe involve, the researchers mitigate the imposed risks of losing money and any other person's rights.

[1] Here to support my claim: http://ccnmtl.columbia.edu/projects/cire/pac/foundation/#1

For the OP, I think the best way for you to gain more information that you need to finish your research paper is through surveying.
Conducting a survey is a very tedious work and it is not applicable for a little analysis due to the fact that it maybe subjected for data inaccuracy. Well, if OP focuses on the effect of lock-down on online gaming sector, a Qualitative research would be enough that includes 5 to 10 questions to be distributed to gather some data among the selected population. This maybe a tedious work, but it is possible.

This studies will make us visualize the how the pandemic affect our gambling career, many of us are using online gambling right now due to the prohibited casinos to open. Some of us are really rooting for the physical casinos but it is forbidden by the authority or law. These graphs will really make us see the effect of this covid-19 to the volume of people accessing the online casinos. Before we make some conclusion, we must apply statistical analysis like correlation to know if there is a progress when this pandemic occurs. Probably, there is some improvement in the use of online gambling casino because it is much safer than the physical casinos so that there are a lot of people who guaranteed to use online platforms.

After reading those articles I'm not surprised that people are now turning on online gambling in this pandemic, but what surprises me is the the very high number of new converts from one poll over 40%, this is very  much enough for online gambling casinos to make enough profit, and if this lockdown continues, I'm seeing a lot countries having their second wave, more and more gamblers will turn to online gambling.

I don't take gambling as career since for me I gamble just for fun but the numbers is not surprising at all since we as a gambler including the offline gamblers doesn't have an option to play and It's so boring inside the house with nothing to do so online gambling will be one of the options right now, That's why we can see the statistics rise and for sure the offline gamblers who knows or tried to play on online sites will get used to play with at ease in front of their computers.

I dont think so., when second wave happens then i would say that majority of gamblers wont prioritize their gambling habits but rather would be focusing
on how to survive.Come to think that jobs and all industries excluding online ones are heavily affected which means theres no income so there would be
no money to spend on.Would you really take a decision on where you do exchange your food just for you to gamble?

Its normal for us human beings to look for alternative and if we do able to see such thing then theres no question that we would really engage to that
but we should think on what would be the main priority as of these days.

These are one of the articles floating around to have those presumptions of online gambling sites would boomed into this pandemic situation
but i would say that i cant really see much in regards to that. That graph above do shows that it didnt really affect that much.

Why would there be a comprehensive study about this, everyday people don't get locked down, and comprehensive studies are expensive. Usually isolation and lockdown is a prisoner thing.  Logic tells us if they closed all the land casinos, the gamblers will probably go online to gamble.
