[Tips] A Member ask Me: Merit Value Greater Than Activity. How it happen?

A member asked me what you have done for the forum so that your merit value is greater than the activity. This question is actually not an extraordinary question for me. Because, there are so many members who certainly have far more merit value compared to what I get. However, by getting this question, I feel that it is good to share something that might be a way for members to improve their activities in this forum and become better than me.

1. Learn how to make a good post
I am a member who used to get reprimands from moderators because of my posting activities. At that time, many of the comments I made were deleted by the moderator. If you open this page, you will see a fairly long post gap. During that period, I prefer to be a silent reader and start to improve activities and posts, so that I can rank up a few months later. So, am I a good poster now? No, I'm not. But, at least I have already made a change to my posting activity and get a lot of merit from it.

2. Share simple things about the forum, but deserve to be discussed as part of the education for members
My activities in this forum, mostly I do on the local board. On this board I made a thread several thread, such as:

• Bitcointalk features that are rarely noticed
• Translating LoyceV Thread: How to use the trust system
• How to create Index list on your thread
• Change username Bitcointalk
• more..

From some of the threads that I made, I also get appreciation from members with merit. Besides being useful for myself, from the several threads that I created, in fact many members did not fully understand the features of the forum. It's mean, there are lots of things you can share only from this forum.

3. Share a little things what you know, no matter how small it is
I'm just a member who is also still learning to understand crypto. However, when I know something new and has not been shared by others in this forum, I also share that new knowledge that I got in a thread (as with the previous points (#2), I shared the thread on the local board).  I know, what I share may not be complete or have some error, but at least there is hope for me to find the point of error (if any) or will get additional information relevant to the thread that I created, so it will generate new knowledge for me and other members.

4. Enjoy
Don't be too serious about pursuing merit and making you feel depressed because you can't level up. Instead, make the post as simple as possible as long as it is relevant to the main topic (OP) and useful for others. For your efforts, one day you will get merit. Indeed, there are many members who work hard for 10 merit, but sometimes a simple thing that makes other people happy can also give merit to the member. So, keep creating a constructive post and enjoy your merit later.

Those are some things that I did for this forum, so that my account has greater merit than activity. But I am still nothing, there are many members who are much better than me. I am just one example, it does not mean I am the best here.

For those of you who ask me or members who have the same question, "how did this happen?", I have given some things that I have done. Hopefully this method can also be implemented by you, so that more members will contribute positively to Bitcointalk.org.

I hope, there will be many other members who come to this thread and give some tips to you to complete things that are not mentioned in this thread.

If a person is quite helpful because of the thread created and sharing some knowledge even if it's smal or big as long as you share then that person will earn lots of merit and it is much higher than the activity points. In that case, one of the reason is a person know what you have mention like learn how to make a good post since maximum activity points per 2 week is 14 unlike the post count. Your merit is higher than your activity points but your post count is much higher than the merit.

All of the members in the forum are start on being a newbie by the time goes by every time they explore the forum and gain a lot of knowledge they can come up into another idea. Sometimes having too much curiosity will help us to become knowledgeable because they want to find the specific answer into our questions. Some of the members take time before they rank up and it is just okay because the Merit system and the Rank system is not a race don't pressure our selves to gain that but still it is better to have a goal like one merit per day or per week. Merit reflects the number of contributors to our forum, but having a small amount of merit does it mean you don't have a good contribution to our forum? No. If you have a good quality content output the merit will follow.

Yes, it will like how making a good post, of course, this will be the reason how we can get a merit and being higher than the activity. I know activity points only 14/2 weeks, but since member who ask me have an activity point higher than his merit, so nothing wrong for him to ask about it. It will amaze if the member has merit number than his posts, member like this will be very limited.

As I say, i'm not a good poster, maybe i'm one of the luckiest members here

If you have a good quality content output the merit will follow.

That's why I say if member just need to enjoy.

You forgot to point out the real mechanism here. Generally, activity is counted once per 14 days, maximum is 14. If someone wants his merit count bigger than activity count, he needs to get more than 14 merits in the same period of time.

Those tips you mentioned are really useful. There are many other tips but I paticularlly like one of your tips that many other people didn't or hesitated to talk about, it's local board. As far as I can observe, being active in local board helps a lot. However, not everyone has a local board (me for example). It's a bit more difficult then. Your final tip is not really a tip but I also like it. There's no need to be rush, it's like in real life, happiness can come anytime so be prepared to enjoy it.

BPIP is a helpful tool when you want to check how many merits someone has earned. Hope that my little merit will make your journey shorter.

One thing to consider though is that older accounts have bags more activity, which may play against their merit to activity ratio (*). This also may happen with very young merited accounts, and accounts that delete posts. There’s also the distinction between earned Merits and all Merits (including airdropped merits), since one method or another greatly affects the ratio’s results.

- The first tab shows all accounts with more Activity than Earned Merits, and Activity > 60 to avoid some outlier cases with low Activity.

- The second tab does not apply the Activity restriction (Earned Merits/Activity).

- The thirst tab is a subset of all accounts with Merits (all merits) greater than Activity, having earned at least 1 Merit (I do not have the data for all accounts that comply the Merit>Activity criteria, but have not earned a single Merit yet).

The first tab is the most meaningful one, but note that some accounts with a high Activity value (i.e. above a couple of year’s worth, since the Merit System was introduced) come out with less shine than corresponds.

Sorry, what I mention in this thread, I'm not comparing with older or newer, or even with airdropped merit, because,  just based on my current activity. Maybe if I am very active in this forum from beginning i joined till today, I will have more than 900 activity now, that will change the ratio results too.

The question now is how can you/we maintain the greater value of merit than the number of activities we get every 14 days period. Actually, maintaining the ratio of the merit you gained in the long run is quite difficult especially if you are not continuously reading and making yourself busy understanding every aspect of bitcoin. If we don't have the capacity to engage in a quality/ natural discussion then there is a greater chance that the activity will surpass the total number of merit we have received.

It is quite interesting to a good ratio relationship of merit and activity though and I personally see it as a challenge every time I logged in to this forum.

Merit system is really a remarkable movement in this forum. This modification gave many members challenge and motivation to make posts that are essential and helpful. Yes, its true, the key is, we don't have to force what we don't fully know. When I try to participate in threads that are beyond my comprehension, this makes me comment out of the topic. If this continues, my comments will be deleted / reported more and more. What I do is try to participate in a thread that at least I have a basic understanding. It will be more efficient to educate each other, increase knowledge and when other people ask similar questions in the future, we can already help educate them. when we are able to educate others on our posts, then one day we will also get merit.

Your thread just took me back some memories when I was actively contributing in this section of the forum hoping to impact some knowledge I have acquired during my little time been on the forum, (which I did perfectly well). I did a thread titled; Advantages of engaging in quality contributions on the forum. Just have to bring back that thread up as with addition to all the OP has highlighted, the thread could go a long way in helping those interested in improving themselves on the forum to record progress.

Basically anyone wanting to progress can achieve that by reading through some iconic threads that have been previously published by members of the community. It did play a role in my ranking up process and I am 99.9% sure I'll do the same for you. Learn to leverage on others experience and you'll go far be it on the forum or in real life. This is the most important part if we can share useful to others. It brings an overwhelming feeling when you can actually helps other and they will give you merits. For me its not a big deal whether your activity is more than your merit, what is important is you can understand how merits come. Also we should also not hoard any of our smerit, oj this section, you can find good poster and helpful one that deserved those merits. No doubt why some high rank continously gaining merits cause they are the one who often contributes and answered useful idea here.

Agree on this, my ranking experience also take a hard time due learning process but Its worth it. So newbies should take time to read this experienced by OP cause most high rank can relate to what he shared.

Nice advise buddy, even me I amazed when I see people here that have a greater number of merits compared to activity, it looks like they are really good at creating quality posts. Creating quality posts is the main reason for us to get merit in this forum no matter what kind of topic is that when people see that posts as useful and helpful for the members of this forum then they will give you merit. Don't plagiarize other contents, if you want to get merit you should create your own idea or if you have seen information online, you may post it here but do not forget to include the source link.

I just want to share this thread of mine. I made it when merit system was implemented. Unfortunately, a lot of users bashed me here due to my low quality post.

Why do I share it? Because their opinion made me strong. Yeah it hurts but instead of disappointment, I made it as my inspiration whenever I am posting in this forum. I am not that kind of person that has god given talent and I don't have really background in computer and cryptography. But I always give my best to contribute in this forum and other users.


I was stuck in my rank before and I noticed that I need to move because I was left behind. But I am not giving up. Rather, I read, research and study always.

I believe that if you are serious, determined and has perseverance you can make things that you dream of. I am not yet in highest rank. But I always have the eagerness to push myself in limits.

Sometimes we need to fail before we soar high. Sometimes we need to realize that we should move together with others. And we can make what we want if we know what we are doing.

Hope that my failure motivates everyone. Thanks OP for sharing this to us.

I agree, Reading the thread / comments of others does give an important role for us. There are many members who make me motivated to improve. It all started from their posts which were actually simple, but it didn't occur to me. There are also members who register after me, but they can get a lot of merit, I also find out how they post and discuss. What you say is very true, what is needed is how to learn in using this forum by seeing what other members are doing.


Currently, beginners have gotten a lot of input and inspirational threads about how the members struggle to get a lot of merit to rank up. Unfortunately, besides a lot of threads that have gone a few pages back, beginners prefer to create a thread about "how to get merit" rather than using the search feature or pagination feature. Nothing wrong, some beginner members only think that this forum can make money, so they want to get as much merit as possible, by making that thread, maybe they think they will get input and get money ASAP. Even though being in this forum is not only that, when we momentarily release the "money" and improve the post and learn, this will actually be better..

Maybe, if I focus on the bounty (because of money) like when I first joined, to this day, surely my ranking is still a newbie. This is what has created so many accounts with hundreds of activities, but their merit is only zero and complains that getting merit is difficult and will never rank up. Even though they themselves have a wrong mindset, they have not tried to improve themselves but have blamed the merit system.

That's harsh but let's just use it as our inspiration to improve ourselves. Some will bash you eveb if your goal is to help or wants to share your opinion but in the end you' get bashed. I have experience the same thing but I didn't mind it that much as it will only hurt my feelings. I registered 2 years ago and some of the members that registered same year maybe months later before me have higher ranks than me so there's nothing I can do and I won't become someone else just to rank up or get merit and I did earn merit because I show who I am and not someone else.

I believe there's nothing wrong with having airdropped merits as long as a user is making HQ posts which relate to his/her reputation overall. And about gaining merits, I believe there are so many success stories now, I feel that there will now be very few people on the forum who will even talk about or ask for merits, but learn and practice on their posting style as well as the content they will produce. These users who are sharing their success stories are truly real, so follow their path my newbie friends and stand with them some day.

Merit system was created to increase the quality of post whereas it has now become a way to analyse and select individual for bounty campaign. So, yes it has become a race and members are doing everything to get more merits.

How do analyse the quality of a post? How do you determine whether the post was helpfull for the community? Are some questions which no one will be answering you because you will know it gradually as you spend more time here.

Therefore keep posting everyday, every post should be a quality post, create interesting topics and you will get rewarded eventually.

Great tips OP, having good and quality posts are the main reason why other people here get so many merits, it's not about how long your content is, it's a matter of content and not the context. Just keep reading guys and if you see something interested online about cryptocurrency you may share it in this forum but don't forget to provide the link, plagiarism is really prohibited here, you may report from plagiarizing other contents.
