Next generation ATMs that are currently in development. Has nothing to do with what they are.

The leading Next gens are Nxt, Counterparty, coloredcoin mastercoin, bitshares, ethereum I list them in order of completion of most of the basic core functionalities: decentralized exchange, ipo-able and dividnd paying capabilities. Basically at the point in the game NXT and Counterparty are the main contenders for the first mainstream release with easy to use wallets that are being tested on their respective testnets..Ethereum has the potential to blow everyone out of the water if their code base was ready for general public texting, but thats not going to be until Q4

See NXT wallet:  http://nxtra.org/nxt-client/

some nxt features scheduled for release with client early APRIL!!!:
Full proof of stake currency / Transparent forging process (minning)
Automated Transactions:  Turing complete based scripts (essentially giving ethereum a run for its money: http://ciyam.org/open/?cmd=view&data=20140228080813138000&ident=M100V120&chksum=ba3b7b5c

Decentralized asset exchange (Decentralized exchange / colored coins/ dividend paying mechanism)
Decentralized marketplace with judging
Instant Transactions
Voting System

Ola I was talking about ATMs, not ALTcoins. ATMs you know the machine you put money in and get bitcoins out of, or put bitcoins into and get fiat.

Cash recycling is the next gen of all ATMs.

When the dust on the Bitcoin ATM industry settles, it will be industrial grade ATMs with barcode scanners and high capacity cash recycling that will prevail. IMO purpose built bitcoin ATMs will fall out of favor. The winners will be writing software that operates on standard ATM industry devices. The companies who manufacture them (and have been for years) will offer better support, warranties, and higher quality products as they are able to manufacture at scale.
