The DMs from all of those people might indeed be worth more than the $100k he got from the simple doubling scam.
While true I cannot help but wonder are people that dense? Do they really think the stored information they have on those social media sites is safe enough to the point they are willing to store important information there? I could understand a normal person doing it, after all what is the biggest secret an average person will hold? At worst they are cheating on their partner or something, but for those personalities that have access to privileged information storing anything important on those platforms is just asking for trouble and could comeback to kick their butts on the future. You'd be surprised how stupid 'smart' people can be. If that happens, some of the higher-up heads could roll.

This is practically impossible unless whole of the twitter is hacked I can only see this is an attempt by the whales to move the price down or dump the market by creating the panic. This is a big player's big move and nothing else.

I hope you mean the most disturbing RECENT news. I wouldn't call a hack of a few twitter accounts that don't hold people's lifetime savings or important work disturbing. To be hnoest, I've never had a twitter account and never will. Most "normal" people don't need to tweet. Have you seeen what so called celebrities are tweeting these days? The stupid shit on that platform is disturbing not the hack.

Very brave to hack a famous exchanges twitter account, there will be many victims with this phishing attack. Moreover, Twitter account followers that's been hacked so much. I'm worried that many newbies will fall victim, thank you for creating this topic. At least the members of this forum has received information related to phishing attacks carried out by the cryptoforhealth scam site.

It's bold actually, but this are criminals that we are talking to, the brave their exploits the better for them. Obviously, many newbies have fallen already as the criminals btc address is growing and many are sending sats and think that they can double it. Lessons learn for Twitter here, this could be one of the biggest news this 2020 in the tech sector and very bad for Jack as it gives negative signal to the company itself as there are a big loophole and lapses on their side.

Twitter called it a "social engineering attack", which makes me think that it was something simple like: the attacker called Twitter support, said, "Hey, it's <Elon Musk / Bill Gates / etc.>. Wouldn't you know it, I lost my 2FA device and my password. Could you help me?" And then the Twitter support person was like, "Sure, just give me your birthday for verification and I'll have this fixed right away, sorry for the inconvenience!" Support people want to help the person they're talking to as quickly as possible. They're usually the weakest link, not any technical flaw. You see this same sort of social engineering used in SIM swapping attacks, common against Bitcoiners. (There's a victim of SIM swapping on the front page of /r/Bitcoin right now.) There are some rumors circulating on twitter that the scam was just a cover for something else. For example, stealing direct messages from users, destroying twitter's reputation or something like that.
The DMs from all of those people might indeed be worth more than the $100k he got from the simple doubling scam. Highly unlikely that it was a social engineering attack. The fact that they breached dozens of accounts practically simultaneously indicates this is near impossible. There's no chance you could just call up and get some of these people's accounts with SE, even a moron Twitter support guy would notice some of these names. Looks like every single account breached had a blue checkmark, so it might be a flaw in the verification system—or maybe these were just priority targets. Surprised they didn't just pump some shitcoin then go long with 100x leverage. They could have easily caused a x50 pump on something with a smallish market cap. What a moron. If they did manage to access DMs, then it's game over for Twitter. That is a devastating breach. TwitterGate coming up?

true but i seriously doubt they got that much money out of the scam. i said this in the other topic too, the amount placed in those addresses is like the beggars who put the first dollar in their bowl to make people feel safe giving up their money... I saw an article on Facebook about how much the scammer (s) got : over $115,000 given by over 300 people (though the articles said 'idiots'). It may be not that much to you guys but when converted to our country's currency, that's over Php 5,000,000! I don't know how long I'll be able to learn such amount but he only got it within a day or maybe even less.

Nah, it was the platform that was hacked so I don't think that it will have a big impact on bitcoin. Besides, this is not the first time that we have seen bitcoin being used by criminals, so I don't think that the narrative behind this hacks will focus on bitcoin but more on Twitter itself. They are a social platform offering service to their customers, so where is the security?? And as I have in the other thread, there's a possibility that Twitter will be liable, specially that those involved are high profile accounts. And Jack is a pro-bitcoiner. Both twitter and bitcoin is on fire here, not just the other way around but the effect on bitcoin will be huge since this is the reason why there was a breaching in the first place to scam people using bitcoin. Now I'm thinking how many people are flagging bitcoin as false instrument for investment. I'm quite in doubt with the number of accounts that has been hacked, how did they do it? How about their 2FA authenticator? What @theymos have concluded might just happened without authenticating the caller. twitter support Yeah, but the damage is more on Twitter side, how can they let someone take over their entire system and scam people. Authenticator can be bypass if the hackers really take on the database itself and make those tweets in matter of hours and people are falling for it. It could be social engineering or even more than that. I like how @DarkDays call it, "TwitterGate" scandal.

I wonder how much did they really get from this scam maybe not even half of what has been stated amount.

Agreed. I speculate the real reason of this hack might be because of Trump's issuance of an executive order on Hong Kong normalization. This is certainly not an ordinary hack to scam. It might be an attack from a state supported group. https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/presidents-executive-order-hong-kong-normalization/

I agree with theymos about the DMs of the this top people that could be in the hands of criminals, who knows what they can do with such information, if there are highly sensitive information that needs to be protected and this guys already have access to them is definitely not good, didn't even thought of this very vital aspect until now, i think this is more serious than we are thinking, On a second thought, what if this is the main intention! they were actually after a sensitive info, then the rest of the funds were just a front to divert attention The DMs from all of those people might indeed be worth more than the $100k he got from the simple doubling scam.

On a second thought, what if this is the main intention! they were actually after a sensitive info, then the rest of the funds were just a front to divert attention So you’re basically just repeating what’s been said before? Did you actually read the thread before replying? There are some rumors circulating on twitter that the scam was just a cover for something else. For example, stealing direct messages from users, destroying twitter's reputation or something like that.

If you had looked at the timestamp you would have noticed that this is the first topic on the subject and not the two you mentioned.

Quite funny how some people fell for this, they just rushed and sent money to these scammers without asking questions at least. People are always in a hurry to make money they forget to be careful and at the end they are misled. Even if all these cryptocurrency websites or organization wants to do such a thing they wouldn’t be asking you to send them cryptocurrency to double it for you, this is not a casino lol.
This is even a old strategy that is being used by scammers. I hope this experience is enough and people who fell for it have learned to be careful next time. Until we people learn and being careful, those hackers and scammer will keep attempting in all possible means to make us fall as prey for them. So, just ignoring all non-realistic tweets which are even from well recognized people will help us.

The last info I got from the Twitter security team is trying to investigate the incident. I am very sure that social media as big as Twitter will not allow that to happen again, because that incident is an event where a portion of Twitter that has been verified tweeted a scam.

It is very naive of you to believe that it will "never happen" again. No matter how much they say that their security is really strong and unbreakable, they will be eventually breached. I kinda think that it was someone from the inside that probably did this or helped some to achieve this. This incident itself shows us how vulnerable everything in online is. This also shows us gullible people are. Just because a "verified" account tweeted it, they thought it was real.

This is uncalled for and should be emended if this is a huge loop holes in their software. Those notable accounts that were hacked are just surprise to me because of the caliber of humans they are. Though, those victims are mainly newborns because any reasonable humans should know that, global adoption won't happen within a day, rather months and years. Tweeter should ensure to investigate this event and announce it to public.
