When evaluating posts, if I see that a user has been banned for a long time, I will not send him merit, because that makes no sense. He will no longer need him. Yes, and in the discussions when this issue was raised, all the same, most were inclined to the fact that it makes no sense for banned users to send merits.
Got a good point cause merits will stop in circulation. But there are merit sources that have replenishment of their smerits so it does not matter whether a certain user send a merit to a particular post that has been banned. I did not check some of the profile Im given merits cause what I do check is his/her content. If the user was already banned he will not be able to use his smerit but the knowledge imparted to other user by his post matter. Like for example, this user is rarely post here but Ive reported his post on LoyceV for this one Make your own stakebox. Ultimate beginners guide how to compile any wallet on AA cause of the effort and quality. Regardless what is his status as long as he give some helpful contributions I believe we should spend it. There is a saying "spend wisely" well we invested by knowledge as we able to see post that are meritable.

Once a transaction has 6 confirmations, it is extremely unlikely that an attacker without at least 50% of the network's computation power would be able to reverse it.

For privacy reasons the official list of merit sources is not publicly available, we wouldn't want users bugging the sources for merits or scrutinizing their merit awarding. Most of them would however already be known due to their merit giving rate or having admitted to be. ... Goes without saying. I was giving you the reason why there is no official list. I also stated that it could be deduced by checking their merit history. There has been several attempts at compiling the full list, theymos however declined on making it official, for privacy reasons.

Where can I see a list of all merit sources on the forum? Is there such a list at all? I read somewhere that there are 97 or so. The best list I've seen is made by Coin-1: [TOP-200] The most generous users giving merits. This list currently shows more than the official number of 97 Merit sources. Unless someone declares it, it can't be detected with certainty when a source gets removed. There may also be false negatives in the list.

There's nothing that says you *have*to* pass merits on once you have received them. Theymos has stated that merits *may* decay over time (at a future date - presumably if the merits aren't forwarded on) I feel handing out 50 merits in one lump is lazy and shouldn't be allowed to occur. I also feel merit sources should be audited and should be unable to hand merits out to other merit sources, or to like-minded gang-members.
If you look at the higher end recipients of merits almost all of their merits are gifted to them in clumps from co-gang members.

I feel handing out 50 merits in one lump is lazy and shouldn't be allowed to occur. It depends on the post, which has to be really good for that amount. Or it depends on the user if someone needs 50 Merit to rank up, and has decent posts. Both are okay with theymos: But undoubtedly some people got screwed by this, and if they have decent posts, by all means, give them the 250 or 500 merit that they need to rank-up. If they complain about amounts, tell them to complain to me. It's best if sources try to exhaust their source allocations, even if it means giving posts higher amounts than is typical. If you have 150 source merit and you only see 3 merit-worthy posts in a month, then I'd rather you over-give each of them 50 merit than let the merit expire. That way there are more people capable of sending merit, and the "merit economy" is less top-down. I also feel merit sources should be audited and should be unable to hand merits out to other merit sources I'm pretty sure theymos keeps an eye on Merit sources once in a while, and if you have specific suspicious you can either post it in Meta, or tell theymos directly. or to like-minded gang-members. What's wrong with Meriting thick-skinned gang members who like sarcasm? The purpose of the merit system is to award posts, not users.
This is all well said, I merit most importantly the good contributing and helpful posts not minding to keep the username in my medulla, sending merit to user is something racial and its depicts the forum rules. Also, how could you know a users is being inactive or permaban for a very long time? cause my smerit is open for everyone, that would be time consuming for thorough investigation on such dead user. I don't just believe and never seen user that hoard merit anyhow in this forum, all of the merit given by merit source are for quality and distributed posts, keeping smerit is of no benefit at all. If a recipient have earned merit from senders, there is nothing wrong with him keeping his/her smerit, its a reward earned by such user so its up to that respective user to what ever he want with it. Its not a big deal and shouldn't create forum attacks. Its as simple as that.

I am not a merit source but whenever I am to send merit, i do try to check the user's merit history. If they are merit hoarders, I don't send anything, and also in most cases i send Merits to recent posts so it's very rare for me to send to inactive or previously banned profiles.
Meaning that you are doing well in the forum. Not all are given the chance to rank up and receive merits. Most likely criteria for receiving merits are constructive, useful and helpful to which only few users could do it. Average users like me will probably remain in this rank. Well, I have already use to it since I could not also think of so many way that I could be able to make a constructive and helpful posts. As long as I am earning few cents in the signature campaign I am promoting then I am okay with it. I will just be willing to help for the newbie and other users with low rank like me.

So now the question itself: Do you pay attention to those users who never send anything to anyone when sending them a merit or you don't care, the main thing is that the post is useful.
I do, sometimes? especially when they already hit Hero or Legendary Ranks, I rarely give to the Legendaries except when it is really needed (means their posts are too worthy of an award) Also when it comes to newbies and juniors I sometimes check on their Mert History / Post History,... I'm more focused on giving out my sMerits to our Local Board and to its users,... I'm keeping DdmrDdmr's thread on my track so I could also help the users who only needs a few to rank up. (as of now our Local is back on its dark days, due to campaign restrictions,... an awful fact)...

I made an observation that @cabalism13 was part of a group that were meriting/DTing each other and he gave me DT distrust. The system is broken. or tell theymos directly. theymos has never responded in the past (and there is no evidence action was taken on those PM's) so I have no faith that anything would happen if I again PM'ed him.

I send merit to post, not user. I don't pay attention to anything as long as post is good.
8 - 4 - 2 - 1 = 15 merits
Math is interesting thing, assuming that you have 20 merits: 20 - 10 - 5 - 2 - 1 = 38 merits ...but, if you decide to merit 10 posts with 2 merits: 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 = 30 merits

If you take into account the 0.5 smerits generated for each 1 merit sent then; ...5 - 2(+0.5) - 1(+0.5) both half smerits would potentially generate another smerit totalling 39 To compare; 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 = 30 merits Each 1 merit sent generates 0.5 smerits = 10 × 0.5 = 5 As above ...5 - 2(+0.5) - 1(+0.5) So, 30 + 5 + 2(+0.5) + 1(+0.5) = 39 Regardless of how you distribute merits it should generate same number of smerits, although splitting it more would mean it would need an extra merit to activate it by making it a whole 1

Just because of one person not trusting you, you say the system is broken? You also have issues Giving Merits to my fellow citizen, why is that? First of all I'm a source for a Local Board, secondly, I don't ask them to use their Merits on me, just look at our board now, I rarely give my sMerits due to lack of activity.

There's actually 38.5 merits in the example you analise as at the point there are five merits, there is two plus an "invisible half" merit which doesn't flow down stream from that point. In saying that at the point there is just one merit given, there is then a second "invisible half merit", so although that takes the tally back up to 39, it wasn't derived through the method you describe.

I'm a merit source, and I award merits to those people who I believe are contributing to the forum, and to posters in topics that I want to encourage. Sometimes I will give a block of merits to a guy to help him rank up, but only if he is a valuable contributor ( in my opinion ), and I don't think he is being rewarded. Of course I don't award merits to anyone I have placed on ignore.
The misunderstanding that merits are only there to help people achieve higher ranks seems to persist. This is not true, merits are there to encourage posters to contribute and help the forum. It is a method of providing peer approval for topics and posters, and should be dependent on rank. Obviously I don't "need" any merits, but I look on merits I receive as encouragement to post. If I don't receive any merits, then it discourages me from posting, as I feel that my comments are unwanted. If you want to keep this forum alive and beneficial, then encourage anyone you think is a useful contributor, and not just the guys who want to rank up to gain higher earnings from a forum that becomes a paid to post business.

As a merit source, I pay attention if the post is useful somehow. Doesn't matter if the user is distributing his smerit or not. But yes, when I intend to send merit in a very old post then I check if the user is active. Usually, I do not send merit if the user is inactive for a long time. I have remembered a few posts where I was going to send merit, but I had doubts about plagiarism and eventually, I was right. For me, it's more priority to distribute merits among active contributors than inactive users. So of course I noticed the posting dates as well.
No matter if every merit source has different thoughts and strategies to distribute his/her merits.

When I was appointment a source at first I didn't bother much about the user been merited. All I was after was hurting for useful post but with time (As I paid close attention) I easily identify those users only making that supposenly useful thread just to get the merit to enhance their payout with their spamming of the forum. I won't want to encourage that user therefore I abstain from meriting them.
At some point I was one of the highest meriter that have merited banned accounts in the last 120 days, wasn't that much of a worry since I knew the posts which were merited did deserved some highlighting. Recently though, that's slowing declining because this days I don't just send out merit with looking into the user account especially for those that aren't known to me to be quality contributors. Sometimes it's stressful but if I can be assumed I'm not encouraging some spammer then I'm ok with enduring the stress.
