MEN'S SINGLES - FINALS

Zverev vs Thiem

Thiem comes back from 0-2 set down to win his first Grand Slam: "I dedicated basically my whole life until this point to win one. Now I did it. That’s for myself, my team and family, a great accomplishment. Today is the day where I gave back huge amount of what they did for me"

WOMEN'S SINGLES - FINALS

Osaka vs Azarenka

Osaka wins the US Open against Azarenka: 1-6 6-3 5-3

-----------------------------------

WOMEN'S SINGLES - SEMI-FINALS

Brady vs Osaka
S Williams vs Azarenka

MEN'S SINGLES - SEMI-FINALS

Zverev vs Carreno Busta
Thiem vs Medvedev

-----------------------------------

I was trying to find the big names in the men category and failed to do so.It looks like a lot of surprise results has happened that now the quarter finalists are not that well known names. It is a real shame that Djokovic got disqualified for hitting a line judge. He is actually nr1 in the rankings if things have not changed fast and I am not aware of.

why did you open new topic for US Open, and from the quarter-final, there is a topic for tennis, where US Open was discussed?
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1200104.0

there is not much comments there daily, but i do not see why do you expect that there will be more if you call your thread US Open 2020?

Yes there are not real big names left in the draw. Djokovic has nobody but himself to blame for getting disqualified. I would not be surprised if Medvedev wins his first grand slam at the US Open.

@swogerino most of the big names had opted not to participate in the US open, and the remaining big ones including Djokovic are out of this tournament, hence I’m not sure which big names were you searching for?. @JollyGood I disagree because it was an unintentional mistake, and he didn’t deserve to be disqualified from the tournament.

I can understand why you disagree but the fact he unintentionally hit the line judge is not a valid argument. The fact remains he hit the ball behind him without looking where the ball was going and he had no reason whatsoever to do it and that is reckless behaviour according to the rules. If a player had done the same thing while in the middle of a rally while trying to get the ball back over the net to their opponent then it would have been never have resulted in him being disqualified.

The Grand Slam rules state: "Players shall not at any time physically abuse any official, opponent, spectator or other person within the precincts of the tournament site. The referee, in consultation with the Grand Slam chief of supervisors may declare a default for either a single violation of this code."

And the rulebook states players shall not hit the ball: "....dangerously or recklessly within the court, or with negligent disregard of the consequences"

As a result of this incident Djokovic has also been fined $10,000, he will also have to forfeit his $250,000 earnings in the US Open and he will also lose his ranking points earned in the tournament.

@JollyGood I disagree because it was an unintentional mistake, and he didn’t deserve to be disqualified from the tournament.

I really want to see another match between Daniil Medvedev VS Novak Djokovic but that disqualification had ruined that, I really think that both players would give us a matchup that is really amazing and accurate play, but well in my opinion Novak Djokovic doesn't really want to hit the judge if you would look on another angle he is not looking while hitting the ball towards the line judge and realized it late but that was the rules, I can feel that Daniil Medvedev has a huge chance in winning this.

With Djokovic out of the game - US Opens lost half of its charm, at least to me! It's a shame that media is propagating this news in a very wrong light. Whatever happened, it was an accident and wasn't intentional at all. He threw the ball outside the court out of frustration and it hit the line judge. See the video below,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRuu2-VIw5o

Now when you say "Djokovic disqualified for hitting a ball against a line judge", it takes the matter to a negative side which is actually incorrect!

I've been out of the tennis loop for a while but had to check what's the fuss on Djokovic. I watched the video and it seems unintentional but it was reckless of him to hit the ball that high towards an official. He could have hit it low and let the ball roll over. The disqualification is warranted.

~
This is such BS.  He wasn't even angry.  Have you seen the video? They have 10,000 cameras and they could find one with the ball hitting her face? come on now.

He turned around and lightly hit the ball to the back.  His face was completely sincere when he saw her.  Pure honest mistake.  The Judge was such a drama queen with her All Star acting.

You might want to reread the rule provided by @JollyGood. Angry or not; Honest mistake or not, the act was reckless.

I'm not disagreeing with the rule, it's a straight 100% disqualification, no argument there.  It just the media and news portraying this wrong.

"Novak Djokovic's US Open meltdown"
"Angry Djokovic"
"ball smacked in rage"
"Djokovic crossing the line"

These are the headlines.   But he wasn't even angry, he lightly hit the ball to the back and it happens to hit the line judge.  I don't know why they are trying to make him a bad guy when this is purely unintentional and did not caused by anger.  He later went online to defend the line judge knowing she will received threats and apologize for the 10th times.

-Pho

It is only afterwards that he defended the judge online. At first, he didn't really accept his disqualification given his 10 minute chat with the judge. For any other player, there wouldn't even be a discussion. Furthermore, he didn't went afterwards to the press conference, so I can understand these media headlines.

Yes it was a very reckless act and whether the line judge was exaggerating or not, Djokovic deserved to be disqualified because anything less than that would have been a travesty.

He tried his best to not get disqualified but he broke the rules and he deserved the $10,000 fine and deserves the fact his $250,000 earnings in the US Open will be withheld and he also deserves to lose his ranking points earned in the US Open tournament. That should serve as a deterrent to player that wants to break the rules.

Jollygood, I fully agree with you. Rules need to be the same for everyone, even if you are number 1. All fellow tennis players also mentioned that disqualification was correct.

On a different note: impressive win of Elise Mertens against Kenin! Didn't expect it, but hopefully she can continue like this!

Good video, I wasn't able to find this yesterday.

It's funny that after I watched this video, Youtube's next recommended video was titled: Top 10 Oscar-Worthy ATP Tennis Moments!

LOL, definitely not a coincident.

But on the serious note, I feel bad for the Djok even though he couldn't avoid the disqualification if his Speech skill level is 100.

-Pho
I also feel for Djokovic, if he had won the tournament he would have closed the gap on Nadal and Federer for Grand Slams. He will have to wait to see if he will at 33 win another major, ever.

Kenin was so sure she would get through, most people would have had her as their favourite. The tournament this year has many surprises along with the long list of players that pulled out before it started.

Biggest surprise on the Men side for me was Tsitsipas. With the disqualification of Djokovic, he had an unique chance to win his first slam, but failed in the early rounds already.
Zverev and Carreno Busta are through to the semi finals. Other semi final will normally be Thiem vs Medvedev.

BIG WINNER!

It was a surprise for Nole to get DQ'd out of the tournament from that mess up with a ball hitting an empire in the throat.
As Zverev said during his post match interview he mentioned if the ball was hit just an inch differently it wouldn't be such an incident of happening.
Just severely unlucky for Djokovic, I would have to say because as he had mentioned, the lines person moved into the balls path at the last second.
I am not sure as I haven't looked at the video too closely but there are certainly alot of different angles with all the phone footage as well.

Thanks for the explanation, if we just take a look at the actions of Djokovic without any context of the rules the disqualification could seem excessive for anyone not acquainted with them, but after reading the text then it is obvious why he was disqualified, it is a shame this happened but he has no one else to blame but himself for this incident, but on the long term it should be not be too big of a deal, I think he already apologized, as he should, for this incident and all of this will just be a bad memory for him with no long term repercussions.

Its kinda strange seeing this year results and maybe we see a new winner for the Men US open for this year. Good thing is that the tournament is taking place and is not postponed like many other major tournaments because of pandemic.

Those are the words from the actual rulebook so to be fair Djokovic had to be disqualified for the integrity of the rules to be upheld.

Doesn't seem that way to me.

John McEnroe stated that this will stay with him for the rest of his career.  The Bad Guy Djokovic. on CNN Sport.

They tried to compare a video from Federer few years back hitting the ball boy but it's definitely not the same.

Djok just have to shake it off and be careful on saying things on social media now to keep his fan base loyal.
I agree with McEnroe, this will affect Djokovic especially if he fails to win another Grand Slam, he is 33 years old after all and he will probably never catch Nadal who is in #2 in overall Grand Slam wins and Djokovic will probably be unable to catch Federer who is #1 on all time Grand Slam wins. If that remains then it will haunt Djokovic because both Nadal and Federer were his biggest obstacles in the US Open this year but both decided to not participate.

Federer hit the ball to the ball boy in order for him to catch it but the net post was obscuring the view the ball boy and the ball hit his shoulder. If the kid was actually looking at the where Federer was hitting the ball then he would have caught it but he looked away after Federer hits it. Seems to me the net post blocking his eye line is the only explanation why he was hit but Federer did nothing against the rules hence why he was not fined or disqualified.
