This is my latest research project, and I'm looking at some of the more common pets that are used to guard houses, and other property. So far I have found -
Guard dogs - these are the obvious pets, and have been used almost as long as man has been around. Guard donkeys - these are great for guarding flocks of sheep Guard cats - a bit of a stretch this one,but cats are territorial. Guard llamas - great for protecting goat herds. Guard geese - often used to look after chickens. They kick up a hell of a noise when disturbed, and keep the grass short. Guard snake - I had to include this, as Harrods used a cobra to guard a £65,000 pair of shoes.
Please let me know if you can think of any other interesting ones, or feel free to comment on the ones I have mentioned.

Very interesting research. I have found an excellent article about it https://pethelpful.com/misc/animals-for-protection. You can read it. Here you can find out the names of some of the other pets that are used as guards.

Guard crocodile. Throw it in your water filled moat, raise the drawbridge and when would be trespassers attempt to swim across, it will keep the moat pretty much free of invaders.

Is Lion a pet animal?
Anton LaVey thought so (it probably helped that he was a former lion tamer), but even he couldn't get away with it for long, as noise complaints from his neighbours eventually forced him to give his pet lion, Togare, to a zoo.

For some reason my family once got a white lion cub, someone lied to my mom saying it was some sort of dog and was getting rid of it, but we found out later this was no dog. It was given to another person who then gave it to a Zoo as it started getting bigger and ate a whole lot of meat.
Its fun and games when its little, but you don't want that thing when it grows... I cannot imagine where it came from, they are not native in my country or continent for that matter...

I have never seen it in my real life. This is an exception. And i think that exception is not an example.

I've started to become quite interested in this topic. Especially the long established animals that have been used to guard livestock - donkeys and llamas are a couple of the well known ones, and geese are used to protect poultry in many countries - China is one I believe, Do any members here have any experience with these guard "pets"

And throw some piranhas in to keep the crocodiles from multiplying too rapidly.

I think the best pets to guard properties are dogs, but they must be properly trained to do so. Saw a study a while back where people would enter a random property with a dog on it to check what the dogs would do. Only in 5-10% of the cases would the dog actually attack the intruder. In most cases the dog would just bark a few times and let it be. And if you have some meat and sleeping pills you can take out the dogs pretty quick too. So maybe an electronic robot dog would be the best.

We have those. They're called burglar alarms.

All those species were used and are used in order to be guards of something. However, if you are talking about property then you should only include dogs. Bogs can guard your house or your sheep etc, they can be used actually for everything and apart from that they are good company to people.

I was thinking about something close to the topic some month ago. I was wondering why don't humans use more of nature to solve their problems instead of using mostly man-made and unsustainable things. You could even get most of the birds in your community's airspace to wear small cameras and internet relay devices for the good of their owners below who feed and take good care of them. We guarantee them abundant foods, good health etc in exchange for the beaming down internet and surveillance camera videos/images.

I am choose for dogs than other animals because they are very obedient and loyal... Guard crocodile. Throw it in your water filled moat, raise the drawbridge and when would be trespassers attempt to swim across, it will keep the moat pretty much free of invaders.
surely intruders will be very afraid of this animal but crocodiles cannot be made pets because it is very difficult to tame them.

Hi Really interesting topic. I have been think about that alone and once i was discussing with my mom to get crocodile/alligator or a bear to keep the house safe and the intruders away when i am gone. She didn't agree and i don't think i can get one of these in realty, so for now i have 2 dogs, but yea this are my suggestions.

For me Doges are really good and affordable they can manage things very good for you even in worst issues I personally have some good experiences with these so just because of this I will go with them without any problem and hesitation.
