McAfee who is a familiar person, and one among the leading personality supporting different cryptocurrency project and ICO's have been accused of different cases. Today only got to know about the murder case against him and his escaped from his home located in Belize. He has used his popularity to earn big out of cryptocurrencies. In a simple calculation he is supposed to earn more than $20 million promoting different cryptocurrencies.

He has revealed different statements while promoting different ICO's and his words weren't taken serious, because people understood him as a paid promotion. He is away from outer world for a long, and through cryptocurrencies only he has revealed him. This arrest will be taken seriously by the US government as election days are getting close.

Yes the guy is finally arrested.  I used to follow him. But once he started bashing Bitcoin, I just un-followed him forgot about him.

I just didn't care anymore what the clown had to say about Bitcoin.  When I heard the news of his arrest (tax evasion charge)  I just couldn't wait to share it with you all  Grin Grin

Link: https://www.coindesk.com/sec-alleges-john-mcafee-pumped-tokens-for-profit
I don't understand why the charges are on tax evasion. I get it that the government wants in on the money, but isn't it immoral in the current situation? People lost money to scammy ICOs because of him! So facilitating financial fraud is what he should be accused of. Moreover, shilling is a crime under some jurisdictions, to that charge would be very appropriate. And on top of it all tax evasion, sure. I also don't understand how getting millions of dollars and not paying taxes + helping scammers to take lots of money from others is only 5 years of prison...

I think this is rather a bad sign for the crypto industry, because after it, anyone from the crypto sphere can be arrested

You have a good point here, John McAfee has been done in the past a lot of adversitement to bitcoin and criptos, some news was good and another was bad, but at least he was talking about them. And now whit this news people will lose some trust in Bitcoin and they will think they are doing something illegal. At this point is urgent to have a global regulation to let people know what they can do and what they cant.

I wonder why some people are not obeying the law of the country that could benefit his countrymen. Why not paying taxes while in truth he is receiving a huge amount of money with all his life? It only showed out what kind of person that McAfee really is. Total imprisonment really serve him best.

I saw some of his tweets while on spain walking without any face mask with confidence, only to find out he will be imprisoned there. Idk if he really expect that authorities in spain will do such thing.

I think a lot of people are going to walk away from this arrest. His famous "I will eat my dick" won him many enemies
I was really in to it when he made that tweet lol, but what d'you expect.

Apparently, he was arrested at Barcelona airport (El Prat) last Saturday, when he was on his way to transfer to Istanbul. A police control in the area of international flights led to his detention, once they found out that he has an Interpol search and capture order on his shoulders, pending immediate extradition to the USA.

He was taken to court, after which the magistrate proceeded to send him to jail (a prison called Brians), presumably until they extradite him (or his lawyers manage to squeeze him out somehow).

See (in Spanish): https://www.lavanguardia.com/sucesos/20201006/483889290908/john-mcafee-detenido-barcelona-antivirus.html

Spain just saved Turkey from this jerk, serves him well really. He is not too different from a pump & dump schemer, always willing to tell crowds any lie as long as someone pays for it.

As the attention seeker he is, he is probably enjoying it.

Hopefully he won't be able to purchase his freedom in the US so he can escape again. This guy is a never ending source of law trouble.

This guy probably did more damage to the cause of cryptocurrency than everyone else combined. The new users may not be aware of what he did in 2017 and 2018. John McAfee promoted several scam ICO projects, despite knowing that they are all fake. He received $105,000 each for every tweet he made for these projects, and received millions of USD for promoting them in other social media platforms. With his arrest, I hope that the victims of these scams may receive at least some form of compensation.

I never want to wish any thing bad on a person especially person who is involved in BITCOIN.

But this man had it coming with his statements and predictions.

I think over the years he has made more enemies then friends and thats never a good idea.

This.
Not to mention he has always played in that grey area that stands close to the law. I am sorry for the man because in a way he was fighting a good battle at first but then the character came on stage and this is how it ends.
Or maybe this McAfee saga will have to be written again. We will see.

This gets more interesting, as some of the local Spanish media traced some of his recent steps and habits in Spain (see https://www.elconfidencial.com/tecnologia/2020-10-08/john-mcafee-mina-criptomonedas-cambrils_2779300/ - in Spanish).

Apparently, he’d been living out in Cambrils (near Tarragona) since around March 2020, which is a seaside location packed with hotels. Amongst those, he seemingly chose to stay at the Hotel Daurada Park, a hotel that barely has registered any activity since 2017.

The hotel, belongs to a Russian bloke, but seems to have barely registered any recent activity other than Mcafee’s, who may have had ties to the hotel from some years back. In fact, the hotel was rumoured to be going to be turned into a brothel in 2018. Nevertheless, the police back then, found that the basements really held a Bitcoin mining farm (see https://www.diaridetarragona.com/costa/Cambrils-de-prostibulo-a-granja-de-bitcoins-20180105-0006.html - in Spanish).

I am one of the people that has been annoyed by this person's drama for the past few years.
I also think that people pay too much attention to his every drama and statement that it would always be raining threads on this forum.
And finally it seems like we would be free from this clown if he ever go behind the bar because of this.

None of what he is being arrested for should be actual crimes. Being able to be arrested for non-violent crimes shows the problem of the SEC as an organization.

You believed all the human garbage floating around in this space was somehow magically immune from the law? I think quite a few of them thought the same thing until they were proven rather radically wrong.

Looks like his fugitive cosplaying has turned out to be a bit real after all.

By 2017, bitcoin had risen to $ 20,000, pushing bitcoin to such a price point certainly had a lot of McAfee's efforts to promote bitcoin.

WTF man?

Bitcoin's ATH price had nothing to do with John McAfee. He jumped in only after the Bitcoin prices reached sky high. And he did tarnished the reputation of Bitcoin a lot by promoting various scam ICOs. These tokens had nothing to do with Bitcoin, and yet media outlets attacked Bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general for their failure. McAfee is one of those guys who used the idea of cryptocurrency to scam others and to make a nice fortune for himself.

He jumped in only after the Bitcoin prices reached sky high.

I'm not sure if that's entirely accurate. I don't really remember what he was up to then, but his infamous dick-eating prediction was made around July 2017, which was pre-$5k levels. I guess you could argue that Bitcoin was already in a massive upswing then, but at that point a lot of people were just waiting for the bubble to pop, so he at least didn't ride the wave at its peak.

He also absolutely had nothing to do with the all time high, but I imagine he brought quite a few people to Bitcoin -- I mean if scam ICOs are willing to pay him ~$100k for a tweet, then he probably has some influence in that area. I don't think his heel turn turned people away from Bitcoin either, so he could very well have been a net positive in the end, which is pretty funny to think about.

None of what he is being arrested for should be actual crimes. Being able to be arrested for non-violent crimes shows the problem of the SEC as an organization.

You should probably be pointing your fingers to the laws and justice system, not an agency which is just fulfilling its mandate. Even then though, did the SEC even have anything to do with this? If he was nabbed for tax evasion (which he brags about lmao), then doesn't that fall under the IRS?

in 2017 everyone seems to be waiting to hear from him which altcoin and which project he will cover, but it's actually just nonsense, and maybe it was a reward for him to finally get arrested for tax evasion,

i wouldn't call McAfee a "bitcoin basher" the same way i never agreed with people calling him "bitcoin supporter" a couple of years ago. he is simply an attention whore who has understood the cryptocurrency community well and knows how to milk the newbies dry by scamming them.
he is neither positive nor negative towards bitcoin. i don't think he even cares about it. he just wants to make more money.

He is only after to money and he deserve what happened to him as I saw also in the past that he is using his popularity to pump some tokens/coins and because of his action, many investors lost their money by following John MacAfee.

And now that he was being arrested for tax evasion charges then it will be good so there will be no investors that will fall to his words again.

People have a different perception of McAfee about the things he did before but one thing is sure, He is a smart opportunist that knows how to use his image to take advantage of other people. I believed that McAfee did many terrible things to the cryptocurrency community but I'm sure he has contributed some awareness to some people who don't know what bitcoin is.

On this issue, I am quite satisfied that he got what he deserves by breaking the law and his past doings that led people's lives into a disaster.
