Coin developers, beware of Livecoin.net scam
Livecoin admins may have stolen almost 60 BTC over the past three years

Originally published in CryptoHuff

Livecoin.net is a centralized cryptocurrency exchange headquartered in Belize that has been operating for over five years. It has more than 600 market pairs, generates roughly $25 Million in trading volume per 24 hour period (according to CoinMarketCap) and has many happy, satisfied users we imagine. In and of itself, it is not a scam.

However, some rogue members of the official Livecoin team are running a scam that, unfortunately, the 01coin Community fell victim to. We would like to recount our experience in hopes of preventing any other cryptocurrency projects from suffering a similar fate.

The story begins on September 18, 2020 when, after years of unsuccessful listing attempts, 01coin finally earned a listing on CoinMarketCap. Amusingly though, the zocteam were the last to know of this development and did not make an official announcement to this effect until 10 days later on September 28 (although in truth, we did find out on the 27th, a Sunday, and deliberately postponed the announcement until the 28th, a Monday for better social media traction).

In the time between September 18 and September 28, a number of new users joined the 01coin Community's official Telegram group, presumably having discovered us on CMC's recent additions list. One of those users was a now-deleted account depicted under the username "Liam" who claimed to have an affiliation with the Livecoin exchange, suggesting we should look into a potential listing opportunity.

Members of the zocteam joined the official English-language Livecoin Telegram group and directly messaged "Ethan," a part of the Livecoin Telegram admin group. Notably, we initiated the contact, thus assuring ourselves that Ethan was, in fact, the user we wanted to speak with, and not an imposter account. Subsequent recontact attempts confirmed the account did, in fact, belong to the legitimate Livecoin admin usernamed Ethan.

Long story short, we exchanged a pleasant conversation and Ethan seemed impressed by the 01coin project and its goals. He subsequently offered us a discounted listing opportunity that fit our budget as a nanocap community coin run by a group of volunteers and arrangements were made via email. About 24 hours later, a Bitcoin payment was made to pay for the listing from the 01coin Community donation wallet to a wallet that has received >57 BTC over the past three years, hence seemingly legitimate for the purpose at hand.

That's when things started to go sideways.

We received an email from the same email address (i.e., support@livecoin.net) instructing us not to send payment and that they were not accepting any new listings. Suffice to say, the payment had already been sent, so we enquired about the apparent communications breakdown within the Livecoin team.

Livecoin's response indicated that we had fallen victim to a scam. A scam perpetrated by members of their own staff.

When we followed up with Ethan, who had been awaiting a deposit of ZOC for market-making purposes, he deleted all conversations, booted all zocteam members from the official English-language Livecoin Telegram group, and the user Liam in the 01coin Telegram group disappeared along with all of his correspondence.

When asked for comment on this story, Livecoin denied the existence of their Telegram group and said, "We do not have accounts on social networks." Well, well, well, okay then.

At this point we can only conclude that nobody working at Livecoin.net ought to be trusted. Perhaps this was the work of a few rogue elements operating within Livecoin, or perhaps it goes deeper than that. All we know is that admins within the official Livecoin hierarchy are currently attempting to scam coin projects, and judging from the BTC receiving address, this scam has been running for almost three years and has generated nearly 60 BTC worth of stolen funds. We simply ask coin teams and developers to heed this warning: do not trust anyone at Livecoin.net even if you know they are legitimate because there exists a strong possibility they have gone rogue.

It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

To be fair, I don't think you should immediately label Livecoin as scam. Your subject is jumping immediately into conclusion that Livecoin is a scam exchange when in fact, by the look of it, I think you are just a victim of some Telegram scammers.

First, I don't think Livecoin's listing application and subsequent approval or rejection are all done in Telegram.

Secondly, not all Telegram channels carrying the word official are actually official channels. The official Livecoin channel you are referring to surprisingly has only more than 5k followers despite the fact that Livecoin has been in business for several years.

Third, did you even communicate with Livecoin using their official contact details prior to you paying for what claimed to be Livecoin's listing fee?

I'm sorry for what you've been through but I think this is primarily you falling into a scammer's trap using fake names and claims.

He doesn't look to be the author, only sharing that article.

I tried to open the article but the domain is offline now.

Anyway, there are many scam accusations against livecoin in this forum. I don't think it is a scam (as they are working for so long time), but I would avoid their services if I have an option. There are exchanges with better reputation out there.

Thanks for taking the time to read the story and comment, guys! The exchange itself is not a scam. The very first paragraph of the story says as much. But there is a side scam currently being run by admins who work for Livecoin. That's what the story is about.

In the case you had mentioned above then its totally not really that right on giving out the blame just because of some Telegram scammer but if you do
really have concern about Livecoins reputation then they have major or big threads into this forum.

They don't have a good reputation on this place that's why people do still need to be careful.

I'm not familiar with Livecoin social media, but is that admin really a part of Livecoin team? And if the exchange itself said they don't have social media, doesn't that mean those social media profiles are fake too? The story is kinda twisted and more or less said that Livecoin is scamming projects to get listed on the exchange either directly or indirectly.

Livecoin has been doing shady businesses here and there though, so that's that.

There are indeed scam accusations against Livecoin not just in this forum but also on other platforms. However, I don't think there is a single crypto exchange clean of any scam accusation. It is always very handy for users to exclaim scam every time their accounts are blocked, or they're suddenly required KYC, or asked by phone or address verification, and so on.

I don't think the team behind 01coin (ZOC) has the luxury to choose much more reputable exchanges. The fact that they grabbed an offer by some random Telegram user named Liam for an exchange listing means they are only after cheap exchanges. And probably because this token will only be delisted after admitted on top exchanges. As a matter of fact, of the couple of unknown exchanges in which the token is listed right now, the other one has zero volume.

Thanks for taking the time to read the story and comment, guys! The exchange itself is not a scam. The very first paragraph of the story says as much. But there is a side scam currently being run by admins who work for Livecoin. That's what the story is about.

There seems to appear no solid proof linking Livecoin or its staff to the scam that is being narrated here. The Telegram user Ethan is probably just one scammer preying on unknown tokens badly needing exchange listing.

How exactly did the "recontact attempts" confirm that "Ethan" is legitimate?

It looks like "zocteam" never really bothered to verify that they're talking to actual Livecoin people. Livecoin is a shitty exchange to say the least but these shitcoiners didn't even get the honor to be scammed by Livecoin itself Grin

Feel free the join the Telegram group and observe the admins staffing it for yourself. Once you connect the admin(s) with the BTC receiving address, you begin to get a sense of scale here.

edit - and Darker is absolutely right. ZOC is a nanocap coin operated by a group of volunteers. No premine, no dev fund, no capital of any kind other than that of the human variety. This was not the first time a Telegram or Discord or email or whatever scammer had attempted to fool us into paying a listing fee for nothing. We know the tricks. We've seen them all. What made us fall for this one is that the scammer is an honest-to-goodness Livecoin admin, not just some imposter account.

In any case, I didn't post the story so that you would shed a tear for 01coin; I posted it to warn other projects of what's going on.
