Dear community,

we have gathered here today to regret the imminent end of 4G cards on Ethash.
Latest on DAG epoch 381 all of this precious GPUs will stop mining ETH.

Will they?

No!

lolMiner made a release today that will allow to continue mining ETH with a slight time-memory trade of for some more weeks on top!
It even allows you to go on with ETC on Windows today and until they will swap to their new DAG scheme End of November.

Read this medium article to learn more and how to configure it:

Have fun mining!

Thanks, but I don't want to mine at 10-15 mh. If there are no new coins, then we are going to sell these video cards in December.

For people looking for consistent income I would sell the cards after they have stopped mining.

For people looking for maximum crypto gains I would sell the cards now to acquire maximum price for the cards and buy ETH on the next dip. 2 options for 2 different types of users.

Yea ... going on at lower speed is no option for all. But well for some it might be.

Consider: at this time the 4G ASICs of the first generation will have left the network. Also most of the 4G farms will be gone - I assume maybe 10 to 20% will use a miner support going on at lower speed.
That said: if currently 30% (just a guess) of the network are 4G devices, then suddenly 70 Th/s will be missing on the network. That would increase profitability of the remaining miners by over 35%. Given that keep using the code to continue mining for a 5-10 epochs more does not sound too bad, does it? Especially the first epochs will be nice.

Ofc that involves a huge crystal ball here. No one knows the exact numbers. Also some big farms will already have contracts to sell their cards / cleaning up the space for what ever will come after. But for some - especially home miners that are waiting for their RTX 3000 rigs to arrive ... well for those it might be an option.

teamredminer v0.7.14

This release wraps up our work for 4GB gpus mining ethash. Linux 4GB are verified to mine up to and including epoch 381 on drivers 18.50/19.30/19.50/20.10. After that, we have added support for extended mining from epoch 382 and up. Extended mining is a trade-off between hashrate and being able to mine at all, gpus will lose additional hashrate for every extra epoch. Please see the Linux section in the ETHASH_4GB_HOWTO.txt for more details and instructions.

Release notes:

Ethash: verified Linux support for 4GB gpus up to and including epoch 381.
Ethash: added support for extended 4GB mining from epoch 382 and up.
Kawpow: cleaned up false hw errs for some block heights.

Really wondering how this algo works exactly. At first I assumed that if you are mining looking for a share, and if your share is found on a difficulty less than required but the entire DAG is not loaded then your GPU won't see that share and it will lose it and hence why reduced hashrate.

So I assumed the way it works is that as long as your share difficulty is found somewhere in the 0-4096MB portion of the DAG then it will find it at the regular speed but if its in the latter then it won't see the share and skip it.

However if this was the case then if the DAG was 8GB then the hashrate loss should be 50% and not 78.8% on 4.2GB. Very puzzled how this all works.

You are right, other miners have already discussed this issue. In practice, this solution will extend the relevance of 4 GB video cards for another 1 month, and further mining Ethereum on them is useless.
By December there will be more information about new cards and hash rates, so I will probably sell 4 GB of video card

Quote
TRM v0.7.14 adds support for "extended mining". This means that you
can continue to mine with 4GB gpus even when they can't store the full
DAG for the epoch. However, since the full DAG isn't available, some
hashes will be discarded and your hashrate will decrease for every
additional epoch.

Are you saying rx580 4gig cards can't mine at 30MH/s again? That's a big lie, to keep mining with 4gig cards at that speed all you need to do is mix the card with a single rx 580 8gig card, make sure the card is in the first pcie slot of your Motherboard, I used claymore miner this way and it creates 8 gig dag from the first slot and mine away

you are using only one 8gb card on windows? with claymore? and the others cards with 4gb are working?

No. DAG must be allocated at every card VRAM. When you put an 8GB first, you only save a few VRAM MB from memory allocated by SO (Windows). SO uses more VRAM from first card, less for others. This is why to have an 8 GB at first position helps...

You guys looked into loading the additional dag size into RAM instead of discarding it? Obviously accessing RAM will be a huge hit, but should be better than nothing.

No RAM is not an option.  Speed would be near 0....   The speed needed must be either VRAM on board the gpu or HBM2.....not DRAMon the motherboard.

So, in the end, is it worth to buy now 4 GB cards. How little bit I followed, this is a long story and almost for a few years talks about leaving 4GB cards from the business.
I see here is a lot of 4GB mining hardware for sell, perhaps even cheap, just because it’s a little more complicated to do the setup.

what do you say, people, is the new investment in rigs with 4GB cards worth or it's so risky?

4 gig video cards have 58 days left to mine, if you take used video cards, then take a look at the models
Sapphire Nitro + RX 474/484
Sapphire Nitro RX 474/484
These video cards have a very high-quality cooling system that has been working for 4 years. All other manufacturers have broken fans.

I  will sell 4GB video cards and buy RX 5600

What will happen after 58 days? Can you explain me or point me to article about that?
I may be a little sceptical but when we talking about Ethereum network, there were many promises but mostly with a lot of delays.

The size of the DAG file will be the memory size of the video card and therefore the video cards will not be able to mine Ethereum with standard miners. Then you will have to use the solutions that are written above and get less profit with each new epoch.

Sapphire pulse RX570 4GB is good GPU. At what price do you want to buy them?

Just to note you guys: The miner got an update today that should fix the issues in Windows (first release produced defect shares).
Also there are more options to fine configure it now - the drivers especially on Windows seem to behave differently from version to version, so more introduced some fine tweak parameters to get it running (hopefully) ^^

Check out lolMiner 1.56, an efficient miner for Ethash, Beam and many Cuckoo-Cycle and Equihash variants for AMD & Nvidia cards at low fees.
