If anyone (or any agency) wants to smear the cause of privacy, it seems like a pretty good way.  It is also an excellent means to incite both candidates to make grandstanding speeches (and potential future actions) against cryptocurrency in general—most of all, Bitcoin.

The article does not say:  Did the attackers provide view keys, so that the public can know which address “won”?  If not, then they can always just claim (or disappear, leaving people to assume) that the “do not publish” address got paid more.

This applies doubly when...

The hackers proclaimed that they had gained access to compromised devices which revealed "strictly classified information...proving that the trump-gov is involved in the origin of the corona virus [sic]."

...the information that they purport to possess is an extraordinary claim, requiring extraordinary evidence.  All that they have proved is that they can deface a website.  S’kiddies could do that.

I am not saying that they have nothing.  Of course, I could not know that.  But just from within the four corners of the Decrypt article, it looks to me like a stunt by a troll with bad taste in lulz.  (That, or an “agency” thing.)

Though cryptocurrency scams like this are fairly common, today's hack is unnerving given that the 2020 US presidential election is just one week away and national intelligence agencies are on high alert for potential disinformation campaigns from foreign actors.

LOL.

I'd be surprised if Trump supporters even have any money left judging by the endless stream of begging emails I get since someone signed me up to the Trump campaign mailing list. They did no verification that my email account ever actually subscribed but are happy to send 2-3 emails every single day with differing forms of trashy spam. It'd be pretty shocking to see from any other politician, but everyone knows that Trump will sink to any depths to squeeze money out of people.

Completetly forgot about that dumb thread before. LOL. Was that a little test run into how it would work?

I'm going to assume that no one actually sent Monero to those addresses, because like, who the hell even cares? This was just a way to push some attention to Monero. Not really sure on what the intent was, because more people looking at your crypto is never going to be a good thing to have. Just means more regulation and government scrutiny.

I guess that may not matter to Monero though.

With regard to monero, Trump has stated that the US dollar is the most dominant currency measured globally and will always be that way. The US President also added that the US dollar is very reliable, can be relied on, and currently, it is stronger than ever. Previously, Trump had mentioned that Bitcoin and other cryptos are “not money!” It is very likely that this US President will cause the price of BTC to fall if he bans it. maybe this is a hacker initiative so that Cryptocurrency can be more attention by Trump

Not really sure what you're trying to say here.

But in regards to the whole - 'It is very likely that this US President will cause the price of BTC to fall is he bans it' - It's not very likely, it is literally what will happen.

All of those amazing stories about MicroStrategy buying hundreds of millions of $'s of Bitcoin would have to go away, as they'd be liquidating that. Money on any US regulated exchange would go right back to USD.

Market would literally tank ASAP. But IMO there's too many big names with lobbying power involved for an all out ban, especially with the fact that Bitcoin isn't a threat to the traditional system / traditional investments.
