So I got my very first Merit

I have viewed merit to be very difficult to have until I found out I've got one already. I didn't even notice it at first because, my mind wasn't there, I just came to the forum to search for information as it is my best chance of getting familiar with Bitcoin and the forum and just then, I noticed I've got one. Though it's just a single one, I'm very much excited. It tells me I'm going somewhere if I acquire the right attitude. I just hope I don't loose site of my vision of the forum.

Most of us have viewed merit to be so difficult to get but I've got my first one. It's a sign that, though merit is very valuable here as it works in a way to increase your rank and as such, it's given only to deserving members, it is also surprising that this merits are given off freely despite it's valuable nature. Just about now, I read a post on how to get merits by a fellow beginner and though not so much a write up, the fellow made merit seem strange and difficult. Well, I guess I'm yet to be in the fellows shoes but from what I've read so far, I came up with my own definition or illustration of merit.

So, I linked merit to social media likes (just as you like a photo or video on facebook) though not exactly but then, you only or mostly like only photos or videos that are interesting or catchy to you. That's how merits work as far as I understand it for now. It is only given not to you but to your deserving posts or comments. It's a way to say I like this for me and it's good. I just hope I'm on point in this or get the right idea.

I apologize for being a total killjoy, but some of you guys are really over-exaggerating how "special" merits are, like it's you've struck gold or something. Just do enough research about Bitcoin(you don't even need to be an expert), and no doubt you'll be getting merits left and right.

Congrats on your first merit. It seems the comment you dis was eye catching from the author. Technically you should not viewed merits and just focus on socializing here. Some users got their merits so fast without even thinking if they will received or not. That should be the mind set of most newbies when it comes on posting here. Should contribute some cool and useful information and trust me, merit will come to you.

Thats the thing about merit. You can acquire it even on just your response on certain comments. It is not only coming from an original post but as well on useful response from you that help someone or like what you said.

I'm hoping that this system will increase post quality by:
 - Forcing people to post high-quality stuff in order to rank up. If you just post garbage, you will never get even 1 merit point, and you will therefore never be able to put links in your signature, etc.
 - Highlighting good posts with the "Merited by" line.

While we will not be directly moderating this, I encourage people to give merit to posts that are objectively high-quality, not just posts that you agree with.

People send merit to your posts not to you as a person if they are using merit as the guide shows.

The first merit is always memorable! When I joined I thought, maybe even becoming member is tough with 10 merits, let alone 100 merits or more for higher ranks. Specially a non-tech guy like me who has not much knowledge about Bitcoin or blockchain. But as I continued on my journey, and posted on topics I knew about, I started to get it. I'm a little over 80 merits now which I once thought was impossible.

Stay consistent, don't spam, and enjoy the journey. Contribute to the forum, and the forum will contribute to you it's a slow but very steady journey!

if you know enough and share your knowledge or contribute you'll get merit. just like you said you are here for information. if that is the case continue what you're doing and share what you learn to those who don't.
also, I've seen members get frustrated not getting merits. so I would advise not to be too caught up expecting getting merits every time you think you contributed, made a helpful or quality post you'll just stress yourself out

Actually it has been like something special to others and are actually being sold by other users. I am not certain but yes it is possible that merits could be sold to anyone else. Even the nerd or the doctorate of getting merits here in the for are also wondering why merits circulation now is too low or IDK maybe because lately I am not getting some merits from merit source. Anyway, I am not longing for it too as long as I can share and use the forum of some reference that I could get and  learn then that would be fine for me.

Merit post! Same here, I was excited too when I have received my first merit. Merit sending on the post, doesn't matter who are you? If you make at least a good post then you might get merits. I don't know what is your goal to join this forum, but no doubts you would get earn a lot of merits by your contributions.

Yes, it's quite hard to earn merit nowadays if you aren't a good poster. But I have a suggestion for you, don't regret it if you don't receive the merits of your good post. Because it would possible someone hadn't noticed your post who are capable to send merits. Just continue your contributions you will get a return from the community.

I get it if it doesn't feel special to some users as have got thousands and tons of it (merits) like mk4 but for we whom this have been strange to us, having at least 1 read on our profile is big progress. I believe in time I would be in your shoes and it won't be such a big deal anyway. Though, I don't want to think about it very much so, it doesn't influence my activities here one way or the other.
I've also taken time to check the link you provided on this (The official definition and usecase of merit are described in Merit & new rank requirements) at OcTradism and I was met with more and more explanation on merits and how it works, which is useful but, it seems merit doesn't have a direct definition as the use is what defines it.

The experience of earning the first merit is different. I was just as happy as you when I earned my first merit. Earning this first merit of yours will create interest in posting more good. I was more motivated in exactly the same way to do something good. If you contribute to this forum according to your ability then I hope you can earn more merit in the future. Because if you post good, community members will definitely reward you.

You know very well why you don't get merit.

I have seen your post history, in fact, your posts do not deserve merit. It would not be right to expect merit by posting on the Bounties. I would say, try to do something good so that community members will benefit from seeing your post, then of course you will get merit.

I took 52 days to receive my see a single merit appear on my profile. Now that is not really anything to measure by, but it does denote that it is not something that is necessarily fast to obtain when one joins the forum. I recall my first merit was for an exaggerated scenario I comically depicted on my local board, in relation to Bitcoin price fluctuation. The second merit was on a post related to first steps on Ledger Nano S, and the third … an explanation of what "proof of authentication" meant (that one was multi-merited) …

All in all, there is no formal definition of Merit, and the concept is subjective, but overly, it denotes that the meriter found the post to be useful or interesting, or controversial, or novel, or informative, or well reasoned, or that required some effort, or that was a benefit to the community, … or that was funny, or that went against someone in particular, or that I scratch your back – please scratch mine … or whatever. More often than not though, it stated that the post has some substance to it, which is the core intent.

They way you are comparing merits with social media likes and impressions is really interesting and yeah you are right. In social media you can't force anyone to give like or make comment on your posts where they click the (Like/Comment) button if your photo, post or video content looks interesting to them. Similarly you will not be able to get merits by begging or forcing anyone. Community users will send their merit as a reward for your contribution only but in some cases you will get easily where it depends on merit senders own decision.

Although without checking my merit stats I can's say the exact reason of my first earned merit but no doubt that it was something special for me which inspired me to continue my work here. Sometime small achievement give better feeling and inspiration than bigger achievement.

Just use it as fuel and go forward. Everyone is here to support you and you will get their help whenever you need it. Stay alert, Stay safe.

I see your first merit with your fourth post in the forum. You are like a genius and I think you were happy when you got it.

Merit can bring you to upper ranks but ranks and merit don't determine who you are. The posts you make determine who you are and what you contribute.

Keep up your good work and don't feel satisfied with what you get, 1, 10 or 100 merit. Keep it moving up and higher.

You are entitled to feel that way as earning merits can really be a chore. Like what some mentioned here, the merit system is rather a subjective method- wherein a person merits a post which he/she thinks that is useful.

I have a tip for you: try your best to NOT think about creating something that will garner you some merits. Rather, think about the stuff that may contribute the forum in some way. In this kind of mindset, merits would be the least or the second thing that you would think about as it will become a collateral or an "after-effect" to your actual contribution in the forum.

For example, if you are passionate on sharing information about your knowledge on cryptocurrencies or etc., then create such thread and post it. You would be surprised on how people would also share the same joy as the one you viewed, thus creating this potential to earn merits.

It is very difficult to get merit if you don't have a contribution to this diforum. Currently, merit is a system that can reduce cloned accounts from growing and becoming spam in forums.

Getting merit starting from ZERO is very difficult, but if you already have a good and consistent contribution I think you can get merit easily.

I myself thought that it was impossible to get 500 merit to advance to Legendary rank, but when I became a member who actively communicated, contributing to everything can be easy. Moreover, at that time it coincided with 10 years of Anniversay Bitcointalk and a lot of merit was given for several posts that were posted. In essence, don't give up on what you are doing right now, keep on giving good and positive contributions, then you will get the benefits.

Getting first, second and third merit was almost a "mission impossible" for me. After that I wasn't focused that much on earning merits and somehow they have started coming in slowly (I'm not overly active on this forum); but now is earning the 100 merits needed for levelling up something like very distant future to me.

I am a housewife at the moment, even though I don't really understand blockchain, I try to keep up by making posts that I'm good at. You have been pretty good at collecting 17 merits since you started joining. continue to believe, and try hard to make quality posts.
