For those who don't know me, I'm Hal Finney. I got my start in crypto working on an early version of PGP, [...]

After a few days, bitcoin was running pretty stably, so I left it running. Those were the days when difficulty was 1, and you could find blocks with a CPU, not even a GPU. I mined several blocks over the next days. But I turned it off because it made my computer run hot, and the fan noise bothered me. In retrospect, I wish I had kept it up longer, but on the other hand I was extraordinarily lucky to be there at the beginning. It's one of those glass half full half empty things.

PGP was the first-ever widely-available tool for strong privacy and security; and over three decades later, it is still one of the best.  PGP usage is a shibboleth for Cypherpunks.  Bitcoin is authentic Cypherpunk money, decentralized using the Hashcash POW algorithm that Dr. Adam Back first announced on Cypherpunks in 1997.  Bitcoin and PGP share DNA via Hal Finney—PGP co-author, famous 90s-era Cypherpunk, the second known Bitcoin user after Satoshi, and the creator of the RPOW system that I argue was the first NFT.

PGP signatures are an integral part of Bitcoin Core’s secure development process; most altcoin devs don’t even seem to know (or care) what PGP is.  Without exception, all of the smartest and most elite Bitcoiners have (or had) PGP keys.  I distrust the “crypto” opinions of anyone who doesn’t use PGP.  If Bitcoin is a so-called “cult”, a PGP fingerprint is the esoteric symbol, the secret handshake that shows you know the deeper meaning of Bitcoin; it helps to distinguish you from the greedy moon-chasers, the idiots who see Bitcoin only as a way to try to squeeze out some central bank shitcoins like USD.

That is accurate. The objective of an encrypted message is to create one that no one else can read or decrypt except the receiver. You use the receivers' public key sent to you, to encrypt message, and they use the private key they own to decrypt it.

N.B, Private keys cannot be derived from pubic keys.
