I want to create a simple website for my crypto-related startup project. I know the basics of HTML and CSS code, but I've never created a web site before. What I want is a simple but professional looking responsive design with simple navigation.

You could use a site like Squarespace to create a simple template website. They have implementations that allow you to add custom HTML code if you want to add something different. It's only like $30 a month or so if you want to pay monthly without locking into a year deal.



You could pay someone as well if you want it to look more professional, but for a simple project the templates should be fine.

Nowadays, you can make quite professional websites with WordPress. There are some templates, some for free and some others for sale, already designed so you only have to arrange the layout as you wish, change colours and images, and there you go. One of the most popular is Divi by ElegantThemes.

If you were just starting and wanted to illustrate your ideas for your future project, better use Figma^[1] and/or Adobe XD^[2]. Figma is my personal favorite and would be good for you if you want a free yet powerful web UI/UX designer. It even has tons of plugins from various vector platforms such as Icons8, Freepik, etc. And on the other hand, Adobe XD, from Adobe Creative Cloud, does have a monthly premium subscription, which is good if you were onto more extensive and in-depth designing.

1. WordPress is not design software. It's a CMS (content management system). Yes it's free, but if they want something more quality, they need to pay for specific plugins or themes

The problem with just trying is that at the first try, you are going to be discouraged. The problem with outsourcing your job is that your cut gets smaller as it trickles down the line. Years of practice and mastery is what makes this client pay for the website that you yourself created and I don't want OP to experience other freelance web developer experienced, OP has to know the inner workings before offering services. To OP, if you were to go the route of you creating your own website then you have to consider mentorship and being an assistant, experience is everything.

Assuming you are wanting to create a website that will have some functionality or some user interaction, just HTML and CSS will not cut it. You will want to learn some language that you can use on server side too. Such as C#, JavaScript, Java, Scala, Go, etc.

From their you will want to learn how to work with databases and APIs.

Below I will list the stack I use for most of my projects nowadays. You can learn each of them separately, or take some online course on Udemy that cover all the aspects.

Front end: React or Angular (both will require you to learn JavaScript).
Back end: NodeJS (with Express or Next.js). I also find ASP.NET and Go to be decent.
Database: MongoDB, Firestore, CosmosDB, DynamoDB.

GraphQL is also one of the techs I love to use, makes working with APIs much more fun.

As examplens said, Wordpress is a Ok solution, but it won't look very professional and it won't be fully customizable for free.

Even if you are good at coding and decide to use bootstrap you will spend dozens, maybe even hundreds of hours creating your website. There aren't many shortcuts, and there are always small details that you will want to fix.

You have basically 3 options imo:
- Get a Ok website with wordpress, that probably won't fit all your needs, just the most basic of them.
- hire someone, which will cost money or BTC.
- learn bootstrap and create one, which will cost you hundreds of hours of work.

you can pull data from coinmarketcap in realtime just like the big boys do it. most website displaying crypto info are just pulling from an API.

the functionality of adding addresses and something similar to  crypto exchange , well that's another animal, this will require more coding and servers use as well as connecting to a blockchain for transactions.

If you have some money to spare you could check out Fiverr. There are a lot of people that offer their services just for what you are looking for and the prices vary so you can always find something on the lower end.

Fiverr is good for some certain jobs, however its not advisable for anyone to use them in building a site. Many people there care about gigs and not the quality of the work. And considering it is something as critical as a website, they might even dump some scripts or codes which the OP might not know about; assessing the site in the future.

His best option is to hire a reputable 'registered' web design company to do a flawless job for him, considering it's a crypto related project. It may cost him, but at least he has someone to run to or hold response if anything goes wrong on the site.

I find a few that I like, but they seem to be too bloated, which may be an issue in the future. I mean, who is so crazy to create a website with over 20k lines of CSS code?

I'm not looking for anything special in terms of functionality. Just a few basic static pages and a few forms (for contact and queries). Of course, news section would be nice since WP already offers publishing feature out of the box.
I checked out the Elementor plugin you suggested, and if I understand correctly, it's some sort of WYSISWY website builder. I don't think I need that right now because I want to manually edit all of the content on the website and I believe it will result in more bloated and unnecessary code in the html part of the website.

As I previously said, I know my way around HTML and CSS and am not afraid to get my hands dirty. But since I'm not an expert in PHP and am unfamiliar with wordpress-specific functions, I'm not ready to create a full WP theme from scratch.

I believe you're missing the point of what WP Starter templates stand for. These are core templates for developers, not ready-made templates that you can simply install and use on your website. This is the starting point from which you can create your unique-looking website. Many professionally built templates, including commercial templates available on the envato market, have these starter templates as their foundations.

I don't think you're right about this. WordPress is a very popular platform, with tens of thousands of free templates available. True, most of them will not give you full control over changing the design to your requirements and preferences, but it is wrong to say that all free templates are bad.
The only way to have full control over design and content is to build your own template from scratch or use the starter templates. Of course, I'm not going to downplay the value of hiring a skilled front-end developer, but that doesn't mean that no one can't create a nice, functional website on their own.

There are many ways to tell whether a website was built with WordPress. I'll highlight a few of the most popular here. Please keep in mind that not all of these suggestions will work on all WordPress sites, but some of them should.

• Look for the word "WordPress" in the footer!

OP, I suggest you to have a look at themes on Themeforest or Envato Elements (or always check if anything you liked on Themeforest is available on Envato Elements cause this last one offers you unlimited access on their products for $16.50 months.

With the help of elementor, you can modify templates more likely the way you wish. I guess what you want is just a "landing page", so, html/css can be enough for you and you don't need to stick with wordpress.

When you think you has finish your web, you can rent a hosting and a domain like hostinger.com so that your website can run on the internet.

The site you referred to, I can call it a "service" whether it is free or not, but it has nothing to do is that you can program web pages without a "programming language", They are just already made websites by developers and the tool has UI allow you to edit the., A paid service can do all that for you. Hi, in my opinion to create a website is easier than someone could think. I see different comments about to create it through Wordpress or Squarespace, etc. However, it would be better for you to create your own website from the scratch because of you will be able to control all about your website, from the content to the design. Taking into account that you have the basis of HTML and CSS code, it would be so easy for you. My tip is that you should search for any website template and study the code and the reason why the developer are employer each part of the code. I think this is the best way to learn how to design a website and to obtain your best!

Talking about my experience, some years ago I created my first webpages (feom the scratch) and having no knowledge of HTML nor CSS, but the result was better than expected. Nowadays, I have created more than 10 websites. For that reason, I think that the best way is to keep in mind that you are able to do it and start the website from the scratch.

Hello! the most important questions here is whether the website will offer user interaction. This means, HTML, CSS, Photoshop, Illustrator etc. are great in order to design the website, but, if you want transactions, databases, chatting, email support etc., then it's a whole other story.

I will give you this information for free. If you want to build a project, from the standpoint of your resources about HTML and CSS, I'll advice that you delegate that development to a designer. You have enough energy to push a project only at starting point, as you progress, you will understand that the in-betweens is more draining than the website you want to develop yourself, save yourself the stress since you can afford it and focus on more core features.

you can try to create a website using codeigniter and bootstrap. if you understand php and html, it shouldn't be difficult for you to build a website using these 2 frameworks. and it should be quite easy to use that framework compared to django, because there are many tutorials available on youtube and google that you can learn and they use php which the average programmer already understands.

WordPress is the go-to for making websites, dead simple to use. Django, from what I know, is for building hardcore web apps, not quite the same league. I'm not an expert, but I'm not even sure that Django even counts as a CMS. CMS is designed to help people with no coding skills. So, if you're all about content and want an easy website, stick with WordPress.

Hey, that's not right! Just because I said no deadlines doesn't mean I'm not working on the project. Haven't you ever had a side project that you work on in your spare time? So, even though web development isn't my main thing, I enjoy tinkering with something new and learning new things. OP, if you are not interested to learn website design I think it's much better to hire someone for this job. You as now there will probably spend more money on tools (ok we will not count your time) than how much you need to pay someone to create a website for you.
If you want something basic, WordPress is an OK solution for easy automated website. Also, if you understand HTML and CSS, maybe you can read something about Bootstrap, but you will still need some other tool of you want to have a little more advanced design.

Probably the best thing to do for OP, I have done some of those Wix and Squarespace before and you need to have some sort of coding knowledge at the least to make it work or understanding how to design a website because, the drag and drop function of these website design platform is not totally true. WordPress definitely is a good one but OP needs to learn basic HTML5 and CSS to do some decent simple website on that if I recall correctly. And also OP, if you plan to design just a simple website then you are going to be fine with hiring someone because it is not a complicated ask for the web developer you might hire.

As a forum user, I'm fascinated by the current trends of web design. Incorporating Images into website design adds a unique touch, blending old tradition with modern aesthetics. It creates an engaging visual, capturing the essence of the past in today's.

Its not a secret that nice websites don't sell well, There is a big difference between Social networks and Web, web has functions which are pretty usefull.
Its a big difference in sending out emails over a gmail account or a domain based account.

I don’t think it’s necessary to hire someone for something you can do. There’s a lot of websites out there that lets you create aesthetically pleasing yet functional webpages. A few that I’ve tried would be jimdo and wordpress. I find jimdo to be easier to navigate but both gives off relatively the same result. All you need is some creativity and you’re good to go.

Why does this thread sound more like a development thread and also a web guidance thread than the OP.

Creating websites is easy to those who know how to and complex for those who don't and are not concerned about learnig it. Imagine building your own site and its done in a day using wordpress, its an easy task because you have the skills and expertise but for a newbie it isn't. I see OP is trying to lay his hands on something new so a guided process step will be better, although I believe OP should have used youtube than the forum

You could use a site like Squarespace to create a simple template website. They have implementations that allow you to add custom HTML code if you want to add something different. It's only like $30 a month or so if you want to pay monthly without locking into a year deal.



You could pay someone as well if you want it to look more professional, but for a simple project the templates should be fine.

Hey, that's not right! Just because I said no deadlines doesn't mean I'm not working on the project. Haven't you ever had a side project that you work on in your spare time? So, even though web development isn't my main thing, I enjoy tinkering with something new and learning new things. Besides, I've already mentioned that I know something about HTML and CSS, so this isn't completely foreign to me.

Since you posted this thread two years back in the January of 2021, i guess by now you should have finished this project and your website must be live by today ?
Is it or you are still planning to create a site ? By the way, if you are not able to create a simple site in these two years, i guess you must be busy in your other works (where you may get better revenue) and you still thinking to get this site done once you get time.

OfCourse you can outsource anyone to create a site for you if you do not have time and i guess you can check out different services being offered at the fiverr platform.

Yes it is and people need to start somewhere.
Once they have a shining sparkling web presence they see that no one else is seeing them.
Next step is ads, those ads perform badly as most first-done websites have not thought about color, font choices, proper pictures and much else. A properly done site neither is a guarantee to success via ads nowadays. Less than a few years back.

Well nowadays it's really simple to create and design a simple website. Wordpress can be used for such work.

All you need is Elementor plugin , watch a couple of tutorials online and you're good to go ( i'd say within a day if you are a little tech savvy )

- get a domain & shared hosting ( most of them even provide free ssl now )
- login to cpanel - wordpress management and install a new wordpress instance
- you're already half way there
- get elementor plugin ( the free one has a lot of features , the pro one provides templates and what not )

The pro would be a good investment if you're keen to learn and make sites in the future for clients. You get to use their template library, their ai content generator and many more

Alternatively there are many AI websites builders out there too which can generate a website in a minute with just a few prompts. ( mostly paid )

That's true but OP did ask about creating a simple site. As time is in his favor without deadlines, he can slowly learn with the basics and improve on his design capabilities. Elementor is a great tool for beginners.

The design and development of a basic website is the easy part, the difficult part is to secure it.

You should also find a good place to host it, to protect it from DDos attacks, which happens a lot.. if you are competition for other people out there that are doing the same thing.

There are so many SaaS applications out there giving you WYSIWYG editors with simple drag-and-drop features to create simple and even complex e-commerce projects.

You can simply choose either Wix or WordPress for websites and Shopify for e-commerce if you need to. Simple good to go.
