Notifications for moved topics?

Short introduction:

New bitcointalk forum member cryptnroll created a topic about his website Crypt&Roll in Project Development board.

I don't know if someone reported his topic to moderators or not, but it was later moved to Gambling board and that is probably the best place for that topic.

Problem is, new members can't navigate well in forum and they don't receive any notification in case their topic is moved (like in this case) and we can see this happening more than once.

This was his reply after he noticed his thread was moved:

I will answer all your questions today, I am new to the forum, I didn't notice the thread was moved.

My question:

Is there a way to add some kind of (optional) notifications when thread that member started is moved to some other board?

Best thing would be to have this option in profile settings, but I doubt we are going to see this any time soon, and maybe TryNinja can add this to his BitcoinTalk SuperNotifier, or someone could suggest some better solution for this.

One more thing I am thinking is some kind of automated proposed boards while you are typing your topic title.

I really don't think we have any chance of seeing this until epochtalk comes out.

About my bot, I could add this but it would be limited to the first 5 minutes after the thread was created (which is when I rescrape them). These would need to show up on the modlog for me to track/notify it all the time like I do to the nuked threads.

As much as development for new epochtalk is slow, I think there are some haters who would like to keep this old forum software forever and without any changes

I doubt that topics are usually moved in new board within the first five minutes of creation, but are you saying that this is not registered in modlog at all?

If you use the Show new replies to your posts feature then it shouldn't be a problem as it will show up there regardless of where it's been moved to providing someone has posted in it, or just look for threads via the Show the last topics started by this person link in everyone's profile. It would only be an issue if someone is manually looking for their thread in a specific sub board and obviously it wasn't there but that would be a pretty inefficient way to keep track of your threads anyway.

I'm sure theymos could implement a notification but automating it would likely be a bit more difficult that simply getting a message for a deleted post. I don't think it should be a priority though especially when there's much more important things that need to happen on the forum.

It would be possible to get notified whenever or which topics you might get interested. Just like social media like facebook where notifications are being implemented so that a user will not going to miss important discussions or updates within the thread.

In my opinion getting notified to the topic in which I wanted to get notified with would be ideal. You can jump directly to the topic you wanted to get back whenever you wanted even if it is being moved by the user.

Yet, still a tons of consideration to be made like there will be a volume of notifications will be sent to you and that will going to bombard you with. I think you can't check it one by one especially if you are a busy person and you will just going to leave it probably unattended notifications. If that would be the case then better not get notified.

However, I have my way of remembering topics which I wanted to. I save my reply or link of the post in a document and sometimes using bookmark. It happened to me but only in rare cases not really fan of following threads.

What is the benefit that he will get when he knows that a topic has been moved? Unlike people who wear signatures, which may lead to a decrease in the amounts they get, there is no benefit in knowing where you made your topic.
Most of the beginners want to get answers and they do not care where they post it.

Agree with the opinion of @hilariousetc. Perhaps this request is not urgent enough at this point to be implemented in the forum. There are many other things an admin is more likely to prioritize, in my opinion.

If users check their post history and topic history frequently enough, it will be easy for them to know that a topic has moved simply because of the title. But if case it come from beginner, I'm not really sure they care enough and in fact most of them ignore it.

If I do, then I'll know which board is more relevant to the topic and discussion I'm starting.

In SMF, there's no built in option for this as far as I know. SMF is backdated forum software where you can't enjoy many features what you can in other forum software. To implement such option, it will consume huge time to write the code and implement (not sure if it will be effective or not).

I don’t think I understand the concern. The section a thread is posted in should not affect the content of the conversation. This isn’t the case for this thread, but people often post requests to move threads and they shouldn’t do this, they should report the thread.

I don’t think it would be difficult. The moderator pressing the button to move a thread triggers certain actions, and if the OPs request were to be implemented, it could trigger a newly created function that sends a PM notification that the thread was moved. Depending on the function to send a PM when a post is deleted, a new function may not even be necessary  

I am not familiar with the SMF code base at that level.

Administrators need to install a third-party application to create a custom Move Topic Notification.

when I look inside that Application isn't compatible also with this forum version (SMF 1.1.19). So, hard for this forum to implementation various kinds such reporter badge images and etc.

Indeed, a profile section needs a overhaul with new features such as the one you suggested plus mentions, quotes, deleted posts (instead of telling via pm), etc.

I believe those could be via plugins. For example, a forum powered by XenForo suggests existing topics the moment the user types in a related keyword.

May be you didn’t read my whole post. Xenforo and SMF are two totally different forum software. Xenforo has some advance features which in SMF, you have to write custom code. In SMF, there is no such plugin of the said feature.

I also agree with the idea that we should get notified when our topic is moved. This should also apply even to topics for which we have enabled notifications. We always get notified when a topic or post is deleted, so why don't we get notified when a topic is moved, it should be. But this forum is too old, I think there will be no other change in its function, unless it's really important, I mean the functions can't be nochanged.

Ideally, comments like this should be contributed to building the epochtalk, which we will use in the future.

Notifications.... well i think that's a topic for another day :p...
but other then moved topics, there's one notification I wish the most is to get notified is... when someone quotes my post.

Epochtalk is going to be out of date by the time it ever rolls around these parts.  Lol.  And as much as I understand OP's concern, I seriously doubt Theymos is going to make a change like that, even if it's one that should be made and probably wouldn't require a lot of extra coding.  It's just that suggestions like these tend to fall on completely deaf ears.

On the other hand, there is a way to follow responses in your own thread, and I know you can get e-mails when members post in them.  That at least should provide somewhat of a solution.

I guess I won’t be looking forward to Epochtalk any more (but who in the world was looking to it in the first place).

So actually this happened when I was bored of Meta and was seeking refuge in Wall Observer.
