Linux operating systems are created before Bitcoin and they have same Open Source spirit but it's strange to me that some of the big Linux projects are still not accepting Bitcoin donations and payments.

That is why I decided to create and maintain a list of all known Linux OS that people can support with BTC donations, and raise awareness about this issue, because helping linux developers is also helping Bitcoin indirectly.

I am going through the list from distrowatch.com and currently most popular linux projects like Ubuntu, Debian, MX Linux and Manjaro are not accepting Bitcoin, or I can't find their donation page.

- Linux Mint accepts crypto donations with Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bcash and Monero.
- Linux Lite accepts crypto donations with Bitcoin.
- FreeBSD accepts crypto donations with Bitcoin.
- Tails accepts crypto donations with Bitcoin, Monero and Ethereum.
- Qubes OS accepts crypto donations with Bitcoin and Monero.
- React OS accepts crypto donations with Bitcoin.
- Trisequel accepts crypto donations with Bitcoin.
- Kodachi accepts crypto donations with Bitcoin and Monero.
- Ubuntu Mate accepts crypto donations with Bitcoin.
- HardenedBSD accepts crypto donations with Bitcoin, Bcash and Ethereum.
- Mageia accepts crypto donations with Bitcoin.
- BlackArch Linux accepts crypto donations with Bitcoin.
- Graphene OS accepts crypto donations with Bitcoin and Monero.
- Whonix accepts crypto donations with Bitcoin and Monero.
- Calyx accepts crypto donations with Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bcash, USDC.
- Parrot OS accepts crypto donations with Bitcoin, Litecoin, Stellar, Ethereum and erc20 tokens, Doge, Dash, Zcash.
- LockBox accepts crypto donations with Bitcoin, Ethereum and Cardano.

Please make suggestion and propose any Linux open source projects that is missing from this list if they accept Bitcoin donations.

I made a quick search using "bitcoin site:distrowatch.com", mainly the result shows that the Electrum wallet is included in the distros. But upon randomly inspect the result I could find the distros are accepting crypto donations. Like https://trisquel.info/en/donate and https://www.digi77.com/linux-kodachi/. That is an unfamiliar distro for me, but maybe you could find more Linux distros that accepting a crypto donations.

I wouldn't be comfortable using a wallet that is included in the package when you install the OS. It might just be a good idea to just download the package yourself from the original website of the wallet like Electrum.  Probably inspect the repository if using the synaptic manager too to be more cautious.

Any Linux system today is easy to use already unlike back in 2003 when I started using it, we have to manually unpack the tar.gz and repackage to deb or rpm to install software but that's what makes it opensource since users can check the codes.

Well isn't that the same source OP used.

If look at their Reddit and other community pages, it looks like those major distros are still not keen on accepting crypto. It doesn't change after a few years. I don't find what exactly the reason is though. Probaby finding who control the address is quite difficult.

Just to add the list, I found another distro that accept Bitcoin donation. https://ubuntu-mate.org/funding/

Well isn't that the same source OP used.
Distrowatch listed around 922 distros, it takes a dedicated time to goes through all the list. Meanwhile, it is indeed better to recheck one by one about the distro donation info page. I just trying to suggest that it might be easier if we filter with the bitcoin niche, assuming, the maintainer listed crypto packages, that the whole project itself might be accepting a crypto donation.

Does anyone know why Ubuntu is not accepting Bitcoin donations? I don't think they have heard of cryptocurrency and there is no reason why they should not accept payments. I was surprised that they didn't accept bitcoin.
In general, there is no need to create a long list, as most users use two or three Linux projects.

anyway https://lubuntu.me/ accept bitcoin

Since we're talking about open-source projects and bitcoin donations, I think these projects(and people) also need to be mentioned:

Just to add the list, I found another distro that accept Bitcoin donation. https://ubuntu-mate.org/funding/
Can you please tell me where exactly they accept Bitcoin donations?
All I can see is donations with Pateron, Liberapay, PayPal and Teespring.

...
Thank you for posting suggestions, list is updated.

Since we're talking about open-source projects and bitcoin donations, I think these projects(and people) also need to be mentioned:
I added GrapheneOS and Whonix but I can't find any donation page for CalyxOS, and I am focusing only on Linux operating systems in this topic Wink

I added GrapheneOS and Whonix but I can't find any donation page for CalyxOS, and I am focusing only on Linux operating systems in this topic Wink

It's not direct link, i had to make few cliks to find out
1. https://calyxos.org
2. https://calyxos.org/contribute, click "Donate Now"
3. https://members.calyxinstitute.org/donate, Click "Donate Online"
4. https://members.calyxinstitute.org/donate/online, enter donation amount and click "Donate"
5. You'll see order page where you can choose "Pay With Cryptocurrency" button. They support BTC, ETH, LTC, BCH and USD coin.

I found it, but it is hidden so deep on their website and you can't see it unless you click donate with USD and come to the last step, like they are hiding it on purpose Smiley

List update and added both CalyxOS and Parrot OS.
Maybe we need to contact other big Linux projects and ask them to add optional Bitcoin donations (if they want).

Worth trying IMO especially for people looking to donate. They are more likely to implement it if they know there's a demand (the higher the better) and every inquiry contributes. Might as well leave a note that encourages people to inquire first in case they are looking to donate to those who has not yet implemented bitcoin as a payment method.

I have mixed feeling for popular Linux OS such as Ubuntu (Canonical) and Fedora/RHEL (Red Hat) since company behind it already make profit by providing support for business/enterprise.

I am not a big fan of Ubuntu and I think they are now somehow connected with Microsoft, but they have big user base and other distros are forking them like for example Linux Mint.

My idea was to send emails to some big distros and ask them if they want to accept Bitcoin donation and if they want to consider doing that in near future.

Yes, and maybe you noticed that cooperation between Ubuntu and Windows has never been better in history.
Windows couldn't destroy Linux space from outside so only thing they could do is to infiltrate from inside and takeover some distros.
Even opening Ubuntu website you can see Microsoft logos on main page Smiley

Few distro based on Ubuntu planning to fork different base distro, for example Linux Mint slowly moving to Debian with LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition).
I used Linux mint before but I think they are slowly losing their ground and other distros are taking over, like Manjaro based on Arch or MXLinux based on Debian.

Seriously, if you care for the future of computing then you should be supporting Linux wherever you can. I deal with multiple systems, and I've become increasingly annoyed at the stunts that Microsoft has been pulling on its users over the years. Increasingly so recently, including things that I don't want, but every time there's an update, it'll be added again. Even after prior removal. Linux, not only has several distributions to choose from, which you can cater to your needs, but they don't force anything on you. Plus, some of the popular distributions are really starting to touch upon industries that they hadn't before. For example, Linux has got significantly more improved in the gaming industry, and its now actually viable to have a gaming computer on a Linux operating system, because of the support for a lot of games, either through the game developer or  the community.

I'd hope that a few of you in the community had already contributed to Linux in some way before the implementation of Bitcoin, even if it wasn't financially. However, now that they've included Bitcoin I really hope they'll be an increase of donations, because Linux is simply awesome, and is one of our only hopes when it comes to privacy, and personal computers while not giving up too much in return.

Honestly, I just love Linux. I've used a lot of distributions, and still do. I even used Slackware for a while just for fun. However, the more popular distributions have really come on leaps, and bounds recently.

List updated with LockBox Linux OS made by bitcointalk member MagnumOpus3k, there is even a topic about that OS in bitcointalk forum.
He is accepting donations in Bitcoin, Ethereum and Cardano.

One question for bitcointalk members:
- Do you know what Linux OS have Electrum wallet preinstalled (other than Tails OS)?

AFAIK, Distrowatch lists the package list for every distros, so I think searching the search engine using the keyword "electrum site:distrowatch.com -tails" would do the tricks. But I haven't verified whether it's preinstalled or not.

https://packages.debian.org/bullseye/electrum
https://packages.debian.org/bullseye/python3-electrum

If you're looking for full list, check https://pkgs.org/search/?q=electrum although i don't know accurate is that website.
