if you say bitcoin mining causes global warming, I personally think everyone in this forum will definitely not accept that accusation, because seeing global warming has been going on for a very long time, even before bitcoin appeared in this world, because the business in bitcoin is full of controversy, some enemies big under the covers,

So what you're basically saying is that the contributions of carbon of bitcoin is enough to upset the carbon emissions of the Industrial Revolution for over a 100 years? That's kind of crazy that bitcoin is being blamed because it's not even a direct contributor, it's just a consumer of electricity, what we need to target is the producers of electricity and how they generate those energy.

If we draw a Venn diagram of all the people who are willing to buy Tesla cars (that cause more global warming than anything else to be charged), and all the people who own bitcoin and all the people who are willing to spend a large amount of bitcoin we can see that the intersection of the 3 circles is a handful of people who may not even bother buying such an expensive car.
This has to tell us a lot about one of the main reasons why Tesla stopped accepting bitcoin payments!

Also when you look at Musk's tweets and how he was desperately investing in Doge coin and were trying to pump and dump it you get the other main reason why Tesla stopped accepting bitcoin payments!
Actually doesn't really make sense. Tesla declared more than a billion dollars that they've invested in Bitcoin. Suddenly withdrawing support and pulling out from it was a dumb move. Prices tanked and so did their stocks, it was bound to make a few heads turn. Why didn't they do their own due diligence before investing in it? Was the entire point from the start to buy Bitcoins and lose money on it?

The market manipulation is quite obvious. Elon Musk was certainly not trying to profit from it though, it wouldn't have been worth his time.

everyone on this forum will not believe if you say bitcoin causes global warming,, bitcoin does not consume a lot of energy, the energy released by bitcoin is not too much, it can be said that other mining will cause global warming .. but we can't understand Why is bitcoin always the scapegoat?

Mining Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies may take off unfavorable impacts on the environment, a few fear. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said, "We are concerned approximately quickly expanding utilize of fossil fills for Bitcoin mining and exchanges, particularly coal, which has the most noticeably awful emanations of any fuel."
The topic of bitcoin consumption when mining a large amount of electricity, and then the fact that carbohydrate sources are used for this, was not raised by chance. In general, it is far-fetched, but it will already be used by governments to negatively affect the spread of decentralized cryptocurrency. Therefore, it will be better for miners to switch to alternative sources of energy consumption and at the same time demonstratively show this to the whole world. Because this topic will already be constantly on the floor to discredit the idea of cryptocurrency.

I often read about Bitcoin mining on the effects of globalization that are caused, briefly when viewed from the research of several universities, mining activities do require a lot of electrical energy, Bitcoin is a currency that is signaled by using heavy-duty hardware.

For this reason, with a fairly high energy distribution, researchers say that every year crypto/Bitcoin miners will push the temperature by 2 degrees each year with more miners in various countries, from other studies say the CO2 emissions produced are very large, almost 69 million metrics every year, overall when viewed from research conducted by various universities, Bitcoin miners could be referring to global warming.

In my opinion, if can mine Bitcoin all over the world, should place it in one country by facilitating special/largest electrical energy for them, for example it should be moved to the Antarctic continent or Russia.

other studies say, if you compare Bitcoin miners can cause global warming, you have to compare vehicles/cars etc, that pollutes air pollution to the smoke that is released, why are they not discussed, oh because they pay taxes, Bitcoin does not.
Not to mention the industry of course the emissions released by vehicles and industry are worse than global warming you see.

I don't know if it's relevant information but I've heard Dan Pena talking about Global Warming being fake, I don't know much.
But what he said is that, he had a talk with the scientists doing research on the Global warning by testing the ice and based on that coming to conclusion what will happen if people continued using fuels, industrial products - Then nothing will happen in at @least 40-50 years not even a single 1% change will happen with regards to global warming.

I tried searching for the video but apparently, Youtube took it down for some reason.

Now coming to the topic- I don't think it will cause a Global warning, There already are huge sharks compared to Bitcoin that consume a lot of energy, and bitcoin mining will not affect that much.

I guess what OP is trying to say is that it contributes to global warming,,, which of course at some point it does, but then the problem here is people are attacking Bitcoin as a single entity, saying it is like the size of a small country when it comes to electrical consumption.

But people want to ignore that it is providing security for a trustless and decentralized form of money, that is the bigger issue they need to be convinced of.

Global warming is true as there are a lot of evidence such as climate change and many more if you watch on documentary channel such as Discovery Channel and Nat Geo. But yeah, Bitcoin mining industry only contribute a small percentage for the consumption of energy on earth. Elon Musk is just hyping it to use it on his FUD campaign against Bitcoin by that time, His Tesla cars don't gasoline/diesel but rather electricity which same on what is the source for the power of Bitcoin Mining.  Roll Eyes

It's all FUDS to manipulate the market. Global warming is caused by many factors:mining industry, automobile, forest fire, disaster...All of which makes the earth warming. bitcoin's energy usage will minuscule compared to other industries. It's really not worth worrying about.

Surprising that this thread managed to pile up so many replies. I have a few simple questions, which I know very few would be ready to answer. First of all, have anyone ever heard about any of the Bitcoin mining farms setting up a power-plant all by themselves? As far as I know, almost all of the mining farms get their electricity from the national electricity grid. So if the electricity they are receiving is produced by burning fossil fuels, who should be blamed? IMO, the government should be blamed as they are the ones who produce electricity.

Blaming the miners for greenhouse gas emissions is like blaming someone in Germany or France for the deforestation that is happening in Brazil. If the miners specifically seek electricity from thermal power-plants, then yes, they should be blamed. But that is not the case here.

Even when we talk about Bitcoins electricity consumption, Even in China, I believed that Bitcoin miners most have been using some other form of clean energy too other than just coal-generated energy. Why would Hydropower plants go on sale in China amid mining crackdown and bitcoin slump This just prove that, all those talk about bitcoin consuming too much energy generated from coal is just nonsense, no one ever talked about this part until now that the Hydro plants are closing off too after the crackdown.
Everything is part of Global warming and not just bitcoin.

Let me ask you this question, I am using my computer and my phone, will it cause global warming? The answer is probably a bit of a yes because yes you are contributing to the global warming but indirectly, it's the same for bitcoin, the mines don't have to burn coals just to mine, they need the electricity which is produced by electric companies that is the main reason for global warming with their method of producing electricity.

In my opinion all of this is just a big market manipulation, the idea behiend the co2 emmisions that the bitcoin or any cryptomining is causing is practicaly insignificant to what the real cause of the problem is, i can think of a million other products that are casuing more harm to the enviorment than mining bitcoin, and besieds the big scale copartions that are mining crypto do it on a large scale where they use either solar wind or geothermal energy so that can make more profit in the long term.

Some Bitcoin mining is done using environmentally bad electricity sources, that's true. But Tesla cars can also have serious carbon footprint if they're charged with electricity that comes from coal. So the solution is clearly to tackle coal mining and introduce cleaner energy sources, not to blame those who use energy.
The global warming is already here, with or without Bitcoin. It's a complex problem that cannot be solved by a simple solution like not mining cryptos. There's the meat industry, transportation, energy sources, trash recycling, production of packaging and clothes...
That being said, I think it's unfair to compare Bitcoin with the world banking system when it comes to environmental impact because the banking system also serves way more people than Bitcoin does, so this should also be accounted for in calculations somehow.

I have the same feeling about this announcement of Tesla, I think they were great at manipulating things,

Imagine, after they bought a significant amount of BTC, which contribute a great Bitcoin value and price,

they suddenly release this kind of news, which direct hit BTC value.

...

Bitcoin causing global warming is an old and dumbest fud I've ever heard of...

The causes of global warming are factories, vehicle emissions and also the greenhouse effect. I heard that currently there are many Bitcoin miners who use environmentally friendly green energy so that this fud can be ignored.

No, those industries that has a waste product of carbon will most likely to become the number 1 reason for global warming. In my opinion those power plant that uses coal will produce more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere unless they adapted new ways to prevent their waste product to reach the atmosphere.

Bitcoin mining could be a different story and for me does not contribute that much in the atmosphere pollution. Bitcoin mining can  be operated in low enegy consumption   by using other means to save electricity like capacitor bank. The engineering works will matter and can minimized all the possible waste products that could destroy the atmosphere.

But if there are some places, probably a few or should be a rare case that they use fuel to generate electricity. That place must have a cheap fuel then.
If you mean miners using a power plant dedicated to powering only the miners, yes there are a few farms doing that.

Specifically, they usually are located in oil production fields where there is an excess production of natural gas that cannot be economically cleaned up and transported away from the site. In those cases the gas is flared (burned off) BUT flaring is penalized with hefty fines. Thing is, if the gas can be used to power something - in this case generators feeding miners - then there is no flaring fines. Just look up 'flare gas mining'.

Gotta love it when folks with obviously no electrical engineering background say things like that... A capacitor does not 'save energy'. It stores and releases energy and that means that energy must be put into them from some outside source. More to the point, any energy storage device be it an inductor, capacitor, battery, or pumped storage (of water or air) is not 100% efficient. There is always a loss between energy in vs energy withdrawn.
