Last week, Jörg Molt, known as "German Faketoshi", was arrested when he tried to travel from Germany (Frankfurt at Main, Airport) to Mexico.
He claimed to be a Co-Founder of Bitcoin, holding around 250,000 Bitcoin but never delievered a proof.
In addition, he ran a Ponzi called "Bitcoin Rent" where he collected 62 BTC.

German source: https://bitcoin-kurier.de/bitcoin-pension-polizei-nimmt-betreiber-am-flughafen-fest/

Jörg Molt was very disliked in Germany but got also very famous when he cheated Andreas Antonopoulos:

Luckily, he is arrested now for his fraud.  Cheesy

As Bitcoin is getting more and more popular around the world, faketoshis of different nationalities are also rising. This is getting ridiculous not only because they are obviously not Satoshi but because they have collected money out of their fake claim from gullible individuals. This is both a sort of a testament that Bitcoin is now getting popular and a warning that people should be cautious of weird individuals claiming to be the real Satoshi to scam them of their money.

By the way, this thread is a duplicate of this one: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5348741.msg57440703#msg57440703.

It still really boggles me how some people have the confidence to openly and publicly run a ponzi scheme, while thinking that they could get away with it.

agree. it's surprising to see someone lie that openly. either he really has no shame or he truly believes on his own lie. glad to see he got arrested. hopefully other faketoshi will also get arrested asap.

He should be spunked and should be doing a community service right there in India so he can experience what is real life is all about. I actually heard of this man before with his claim to be the real Satoshi Nakamoto and I think it was here in this forum. Good thing that he got arrested for orchestrating a fraud and let's hope those he victimized with his ponzi scam will go out and file more cases against him. We don't need  Jörg Molt and we don't need Craig Wright ruining the name of Bitcoin for their own personal gains and ambitions.

I do not think he tricked Andreas,,, he just probably went to an event, asked to take a selfie picture and the nice man said yes. Very normal for a nice person to allow public to take selfies with them. The sad thing Andreas probably realized only later on was that the majority of people who have money to go to all these conferences are the saddest, meanest people in crypto.

Does people think that satoshi would be that stupid (if alive) to dox himself holding 1 million coins? Which besides a enormous amount of money is also a liability for many.

Yes, AA was taken advantage of the German Faketoshi and if only AA would have known, he won't bother to take a picture with him.

Well good riddance, it's good that he has been arrested and put to justice. He has used the good name of Satoshi and probably well known personalities that's why he was able to run his Ponzi scheme and very confident that he wouldn't be caught by the law. But it's not the end, maybe we will hear another personality coming out and claiming to be Satoshi and then scamming people around.

That's why it said in the title that it's Faketoshi, meaning that he isn't the real deal plus it's not like satoshi will ever reveal himself, remember that he doesn't want to do any kind of reveal of his/her identity because as you've said, it's a danger to himself/herself. It's good that this German dude is going to be jailed because this kind of people are a danger to society plus they cause bad reputation for cryptocurrencies and it's community.

Faketoshi is what scammers try to become. They can not and don't even believe that they will be recognized as real satoshi.

What they want most is compromise the belief of naive people and steal money. When they finish their scam missions, they don't care what the others call them.

Faketoshis will appear more and they will come from everywhere on Earth.

Let's hope another faketoshi will be arrested as well. It's even better if all of them stay on same jail cell Roll Eyes
Their conversations would be fun to hear hehe.

Lies when repeated thousands of times becomes the "truth".

Satoshi is still missing. And it is unlikely that he would have done something like that.
He hid himself before bitcoin became extremely popular so he wouldn't declare something like that but I wouldn't say he is missing if nobody knew his real identity.

They do get away with it when they flee to another country, especially the one that doesn't help with investigations for some reason, then change their identity there, bribe the local officials if needed. They get caught when there are already charges against them and they haven't flee yet and a judge allows to arrest them, which might not always happen. Look at how many exchange and other service owners pulled an exit scam, disappeared and never got caught.

It's not even interesting anymore if someone claims to be Satoshi or part of the team around Satoshi. It would be so easy to prove it and if they choose not to, the situation is obviously clear. I haven't even been following Craig Wright anymore because as Vitalik once put it, if there is an easy way to prove a fact and a difficult way, and someone chooses the difficult way, it's almost always certainly wrong.

I have to admit though that this Molt guy has a pretty impressive hairstyle! Tongue

Sow how could people believe that faketoshi who is claiming have 2,50,000 Bitcoins and not a single proof for that and still collecting btc by running a Ponzi scheme? How does it sound to be legit to anyone I don't know that Satoshi would be asking btc from you? So we all know some clowns who will come and say they are founder of bitcoin and same treatment should be given to them also.

Just because he has a selfie with Andreas doesn't mean he is Satoshi. I wonder why would anybody believe that shit.
I highly doubt even Andreas would know who Satoshi Nakamoto is. This selfie with Andrea shows how just one picture could be used in a wrong way to spread false information.
The number of people impersonating Satoshi Nakamoto is increasing everyday and this will only get worse in future.
We should spread more awareness on not to believe anybody impersonating Satoshi Nakamoto unless he signs a transaction with Satoshis keys.

If you have noticed, all of them have a hidden agenda, they run something a business or any illegal activities.  How many of them claiming to be Satoshi, but none of them can prove that they are the real Satoshi but instead, they introduce and run their own projects.  How poor Satoshi always has been used people like this, they deserve that they got in jail and I hope those early people who claim Satoshi will also be arrested.

Good to see Andreas give a statement that he doesn't know that fraudster, a selfie image seems to be true as well, what's a good edit.
We hope that there are too many of them will get arrested, they molded a bad image on Bitcoin not only in Satoshi because it used in a Ponzi scheme or a giveaway scam.

These people pretend to be Satoshi because they know others around will get interested on them for this reason, what will give their schemes some credibility and attract greedy investors, since they will think the faketoshi is a wealthy profitable man. Similar situation happens regards Elon Musk: investors idolize him because he has a lot of money and people imagine they can also get some profit by following the guy.

No, but if you successfully convince someone that he is Satoshi, you'll essentially be in the second level of the ponzi. There's incentive in pyramid schemes to support a head. Generally, in the human species; homo-sapiens differentiate from the other animals, due to their tribalism.
