Suddenly chatting with a friend today. How do blind people use mobile payment? We don’t know the daily life of blind people. Blind people pay with paper money, but will digital currencies replace paper money in the future? (However, there is no certain mark on the U.S. bills, and the blind cannot touch the face value of the legal currency)

There are also some elderly and children who do not have mobile phones. Children can take care of them and learn cryptocurrency with their families. However, many elderly people have no children and lack the ability to accept new things. With the popularity of Bitcoin, will they continue to use paper money in the future?

In fact, for blind people, no one pays too much attention to their lives. Because there are no blind friends around, they don't think so much. If some technology is developed, it is very expensive consumption.
With the increasing popularity of Bitcoin, what do you think will happen to blind and childless elderly people?

Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.

I think that we keep forgetting that the number of people using bitcoin is still extremely small...

Bitcoin wallets are not even properly newbie-friendly. Making wallets and services friendly with blind people would be a step even farther. But I somehow tend to believe that it's not financially viable for somebody to invest that much time into developing such wallets (although really good newbie-friendly wallets is something I also think that we should have already and - arguably - we don't). And hobbyists will make the programs in the way they can use it (i.e. rather advanced and most probably not for blind people).

So I guess that more time has to pass (and with it adoption grow greatly) until we'll see the software and services you'd like.

Everyone will get old. With the current development, Bitcoin will become more and more popular in the future, but the elderly refer not only to a certain elderly, but a group. A 30-year-old will become an elderly person in the next 40 years.

For payment, with the Lightning Network, this is also more convenient, and novices will see it at first glance. But the popularity of Bitcoin is not so comprehensive. Half of the cryptocurrency people are just investing and do not consider using Bitcoin for payment because they feel that payment is a loss for them.

I think that you see only half of the glass...

Most people invest into bitcoin. One will not spend his investment just for the sake of it....
Bitcoin ecosystem is still small, but there are people who also earn bitcoin. Some mine for it, some work for it in various ways. Those earning bitcoin will see it as a currency and will more likely also try to spend some.

Blind people use screen readers, so it's mostly a matter of making Bitcoin wallets screen reader accessible. At least on desktop this seems to be already at least partially the case:

https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/issues/4637
https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/issues/4637

I'm not sure what the state on mobile is, but it doesn't seem to be an insurmountable problem, rather just one that needs to be tackled and improved upon.

Yes, but for the future elderly Bitcoin will not be some weird new concept like in the worry stated by OP.

@OP: I also would not worry about Bitcoin replacing Fiat currencies fast enough as to confuse our current elderly generation. Everything else is mostly a matter of keeping software accessible, and that's a general problem that doesn't only affect Bitcoin.

As far as I can remember, there was a fund raiser to translate Satoshi's whitepaper to braille. Unfortunately, I don't know what happened to that project because the website is not accessible anymore:

https://pug.sh/adam/braille-bitcoin-whitepaper/

Same with the wallets, many wallet provider, like Multibit has plans many years ago, but not sure if they push through with it or not.

If you look at statistics from various developed nations around the world, you'll find that of the elderly population around half don't own a smartphone and up to a third have never directly used the internet. Think about how completely ubiquitous the internet is in your life today - communication, social media, news, banking, shopping, working, education, gaming, gambling, etc. And yet millions of older people live just fine without ever touching the internet.

This number will obviously drastically decrease as time goes on, not because more older people will start using the internet (if they haven't used it in the last 20 years, they are pretty unlikely to start now), but because the demographics of older people will change to become that of people who started using the internet in their 30s and 40s, and then to become that of people who grew up with the internet from childhood. New technologies don't become widespread through universal adoption of the current population, but rather through widespread adoption of the younger generation.

Yes, the elderly population right now might struggle to use bitcoin, but in several decades' time when the elderly population is compromised of people who have grown up using bitcoin, then it will be second nature to them.

As to saying that "blind people pay with paper money", that is just plain false. What do you think is easier for a blind person - using an ATM, navigating the screen, withdrawing cash, and then feeling for the size of bills to know which ones to hand over, or just paying via contactless credit card? Do you think it is easier grocery shopping in person in your standard supermarket, or using online shopping with screen readers and saved favorites? There might not be any good bitcoin wallets for visually impaired users at the moment (and I would imagine double checking addresses without sight will be particularly difficult), but they will come with time and demand.

Key facts
Globally, at least 2.2 billion people have a near or distance vision impairment. In at least 1 billion – or almost half – of these cases, vision impairment could have been prevented or has yet to be addressed.
The leading causes of vision impairment and blindness are uncorrected refractive errors and cataracts.
The majority of people with vision impairment and blindness are over the age of 50 years; however, vision loss can affect people of all ages.
Vision impairment poses an enormous global financial burden with the annual global costs of productivity losses associated with vision impairment from uncorrected myopia and presbyopia alone estimated to be US$ 244 billion and US$ 25.4 billion.

Src - https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/blindness-and-visual-impairment

The data above shows that many of the found cases have either visual impairment issues up to minor and some having major problems but not completely blind. So they may not face any problems while either using Bitcoins and applications where they can buy, sell and trade it and can also get used to it. About the blind and childless, blind people have got hostels and old people have old age homes where they are taken care of. And our society has not become merciless, so they will also keep doing good for the needy ones including the blind and elders. And TBH, we don't think that bitcoins can replace fiat as national currencies will always be kept ahead by their respective nations and bitcoins will always be an alternative to them, while we think that fiat is an alternative to bitcoins to give it a value.

it seems that blind people are good at recognizing fiat money carefully and can't be fooled, because I have observed blind people and they studied with their fingers to distinguish, I myself don't know how but I can make sure they don't have trouble distinguishing fiat money .

when it comes to parents, it goes back to the individual person, if indeed since he worked he has been using cellphones and computers, I think when he retires and enters old age, it is certain that they will not experience significant difficulties, apart from that since they were young they have not used them and definitely need them. extras provide information and usually they will not want and simple ones will be used.

technology seems that if there are no problems for blind people, it will certainly give them the opportunity to use it because many such facilities have been made and usually use voice, so there is no problem to think about.

If they are blind or incapacitated elderly people, they will have guardians around them. This is the blind person's own problem, not the flaw of Bitcoin. I don't think Bitcoin can solve this kind of physiological problem that doctors can't do.

Agreed, how are they supposed to go to the store if they are blind, they need to be assisted also paying online, how do he/she manage to navigate to the website if he/she is not capable, this should have a guardian or will assist them and I believe this is not within the scope of bitcoin because it is very physical and nothing bitcoin could do with it. Though in the near future, others will figure out how to do this or pay like this for those with disabilities, for the time being, a guardian is required to complete the payment.

This is a concern about bitcoin being user/people-friendly. Well, that's really an issue that cannot be addressed but it's not bitcoin to solve it. But those developers might create an app that shall be associated with bitcoin as its main wallet. I guess someday there will be those developers that might into this thing and try to solve the problem that you've addressed. But if you compare that with fiat, there's really no option for them to determine how much exactly is a dollar bill with the other higher bills that they hold if no one is with them.

For me just my opinion if bitcoin becomes legal in the future and it can be used as a legal tender , perhaps there will be a new system for blind people to manage such stuff.. Indeed nowadays they can recognise the numbers using a raised dots that can be read with the fingers and its called "Braille" even with dollars bills they can use a small money identifier card too wherein in order for them to recognised the money. So for sure there will be a new system for them just to be fair in my personal opinion.

With the increasing popularity of Bitcoin, what do you think will happen to blind and childless elderly people?

I think they should stick to the physical FIAT and credit cards because it will very challenging to use a mobile app if you can't see what you are doing. Sometimes you don't need to create a problem and find a solution for it because the solution is right in front of your eyes. Bitcoin is better stay as a store value this is where it shines the most.

There are several situations mentioned in the OP, but the reference to the popularity of bitcoin, is undoubtedly growing regardless of social class, country, people no longer find the term bitcoin today strange or perhaps for some it is more known cryptocurrencies , the slang is being winning little by little, even in the target of people you mention.

The most used devices have always taken into account disabled people, it is something that has evolved a lot in voice access commands, access to the handling of special keys, in short there is a wide range of features that help disabled people and in fact the use of smartphones is a great tool.

Is true they are not the panacea but in the traditional devices they exist the settings for their use are very limited for certain disabilities but are there in some way for the reach of some.

Now there are special devices for each disability depending limitations that the person has, but for example there are special smart phones for the blind, a well-known one is Georgie.

As for adults, young people who do not have a smart phone, so easy, like they should buy them.

Nothing will happen to them, let's say many people start using cryptocurrency and country start accepting it too. It doesn't mean that all of the people will now use cryptocurrency, they will still use fiat of course this is one of the disadvantages I see in cryptocurrency, it can't be use by people with disability but in real life blind people also struggling with fiat money.

Traditional Fiats were not originally designed to reach people with special needs. It took more than a decade to create the world's first fiat design that was blind-friendly. Bitcoin still has a myriad of complex problems since the satoshi disappeared, but development is still ongoing. Not that a solution to this problem will not be found, especially if it has a profit value.

After all, I'm not sure that blind people will be the majority in the future. So how will it threaten bitcoin's popularity?

The popularity of bitcoin and usage of the bitcoin by blind people does not seem to be matching pair here? I mean they do live today and use the fiat currency whether it's digital or cash that's second part, but they do use money right? And I am not sure if government have really made any big progress for the blind people or disabled one in general! All you can find is audible ATM's or may be in person assistance for them so that they can make their transactions successfully.

Bitcoin, is completely different world and it needs higher developments to achieve the level where they can fulfil the needs of disabled one.
'
Honestly developers can do miracles for them by using digital platforms. From audio synch wallets to face recognisable transaction confirmations. This can be used as per the disability of person and have highest security for them with the ease.
