I can't provide any tx proof, but I've been seeing on Twitter that the hacker allegedly fucked up and made an extremely rookie mistake by sending a certain amount of the stolen funds on a centralized wallet. Hence apparently why this hacker has suddenly had a change of heart and is now trying to be a white hat lol.

Seeing that in various news today! Also I believe the hacker has said that he just tried to hack the polynetwork to make its weaknesses visible with no intention to steal money. Not sure about this claim though. But yes, if the hacker returns all the money that will be really great. These assets belong to millions of commoners like your and I.

On the other hand, the hacker has done some mistake in sending the funds to binance accounts and other centralized wallets. So most probably he is under extreme pressure and fearing his arrest soon. Let's wait to see how the story unfolds.

He is smart enough to hack secured network but again so naive to transfer it to a centralised exchange? Doesn't really adds up!!

Personally, I do hope that the hacker would be nice enough to return all the stolen funds. As much as there are news that the hacker only did it with the intention of exploiting the weakness of the exchange, we should still bear it in mind that these funds belong to the people and it is the people that will lose.
I sincerely do hope that he returns the funds.

It reminds me of fishing as a sport. When a fisherman catches a fish, he releases it. It can be assumed that a hacker with such knowledge is simply testing his abilities. I don't think he was intimidated by the experts' warnings about his capture. I think that being a master of stealing such large sums, he also knows how to hide

Let's call it for what it is.

Theft.

No-one was employed to test for vulnerabilities and as the article states, the thief made a rookie mistake causing their funds (and probably by extension their own identity) to be identified on an exchange.

It's little compensation for some of the traders whose funds were stolen to then have them returned - some people could have been relying on sales to keep them fed or just about anything.  Not know if/when their funds would be recovered would have been harrowing.

This would be funny but he shouldn’t have stolen funds in the first place for any reason. There was a guy on this forum years ago who hacked blockchain.com because he found a vulnerability. He told the wallet & then returned ALL funds & I think he was paid a bounty by blockchain.com

This guy is clearly different though & did it for bad reasons.

It could be the attitude of that hacker that made him return or send it to a centralized exchange. He knows for sure that it will eventually be returned if he sends some funds to a cex.

I think there's an incident in the past that a hacker also has returned the funds that he has hacked. But I don't also get why they do that, maybe just to show the flaws of their security? we don't know what's the reason behind that.

But one thing for sure, hacking is hacking and if they're caught, they know what will happen to them and might end up behind those bars.

The person who was able to get access on that much amount of money should be at least smart enough to not make such a mistake (send funds on a centralized wallet). He isn't white hat too, as NeuroticFish mentioned, he could just ask for the reward in exchange of telling the bug or he could just gain access on it to prove himself that he is "strong" and then just ignore the thing. I think, he understood that it's not the early years of crypto, when it was very hard or impossible to track the transactions (realized it later) and prefer to not spend the whole life in jail + make some self-promotions by this act (media writes about him).

His accident is equal of something like this: When someone robs the house, understoods that he forgot to wear gloves or analyzes that he left some traces and then calls the police, hey guys, I just checked if his house was secure enough and that's why I robbed.

No, the hackers intention is to really stole money from Poly that's why he did it. He may have been casing it for months, which the usual hackers do. But he forgot his exit strategy as obviously he didn't make himself invisible or at least have to be track. So the only way to somewhat not get arrested is to return the money. But it is still stealing so hopefully the authorities can follow the trail and arrest him for good and make him regret his decision to hack and took all that money.

This has happened several times already. Only that, the hacker before returned back to the company everything he had stolen. I guess the main reason why these hackers are doing this is that they want to expose the weakest side of the security of the company in order for them to be more cautious next time. Maybe what they want is to let these big companies know that they still have their vulnerable points in terms of security and the security team shouldn't be complacent as it would put the whole company at great risk and unfortunate situations such as huge losses.

This also happened before in our alma mater, a group of hackers exposed the records of the student but also took down the post a moment after. They released a statement that they did it not to harm anyone, but to remind the administration to strengthen the security measures or else, the records will be compromised the time hacking really happens to exploit the personal information of the whole studentry and faculty.

Nonetheless, I really do hope that they learned their lessons well, and may this scenario urge them to have stronger security measures and protocols with timely updates to avoid untoward situations like this from happening again. And hopefully, the hacker/s would return everything to the company because the common people are the usual ones who invested and therefore, are affected by the hacking incident.
