You didn't even meantion the creterias but i believe aave should become the best defi right now as it was also doing a very big expansion to let the institutional investors to get an opportunity to invest in the defi platform. Defi coin can be called as altcoin and there's no difference between defi and altcoin. Defi was an altcoin that was focusing to create a finance platform based on the decentralization. Unlike the centralized system that used by the bank. Defi used automation on its service just like lending, farm, staking and many more.

I only know 2 DeFi's and those are both with "swap" on their names.
Performance base, those 2 swap names seem to conquer the NFT field and they are in the boom without NFT purchasers even realizing it.
If one project defaults to the DeFi swap platform as their means of purchasing NFT tokens then investors will just follow the instruction given.

eliminate the ecosystem that banks have built for centuries? obviously, that wouldn't be possible. DeFi is doing well this year, but its use is not that great to replace banks. government support as you say is one of them.
I actually think that DeFi will support the Bank in the future. technology will continue to evolve in the future. as well as technology in world financial management. crypto I believe has been talked about and considered a lot. DeFi will be one of them.

DeFi trend seems to be most lasting and most impacting, because till date a lot of them are still in existence and a lot of them are still working out good features and Defi services which will keep attracting a lot of investors. The interesting thing is, even in the midst of the NFT trend, DeFi ecosystem is still waxing strong, it is still growing and still swimming with a lot of good projects, thus in my own opinion I would say, in Defi ecosystem lies some of the best altcoins.

It’s up to you to decide that for yourself. Before going into anything you should do a good research on it and know whether it’s going to workout. A lot of this DeFi you’ll see these days has high fees when you are doing transactions with them, although it’s something  that has to do with Ethereum. But, there are also good DeFi that you will find, as well there are good altcoins you will see. The presence of the Defi project brings a new face to cryptocurrency, Defi is a new generation after previous ICO and IEO graced crypto project. So far Project Defi has proved very successful, thus making it difficult for many parties to compete with the concept proposed by the Defi project. First it was DeFi on Ethereum, then came DeFi on the other chains like Polygon, Solana (which has been stuck for a while), AVAX, BSC (Private chain akin to Binance exchange) and FTM.

Then it was NFTs on Ethereum and then on all the others.

It is hard to choose which one is supposed to be the best amongst these. I'd say that most legitimate projects still build on Ethereum first and then move for implementing on other chains. The high gas fees and the ridiculous NFT drops price out most people who cannot afford to pay upwards of 30-40 USD per transaction. This is where chains like BSC come in.

If you simply want to gamble your money on farms which are mostly only meant for pump and dumps but you feel you can take it out in time, then BSC and Pancakeswap have the easiest interfaces and ease of transferring assets due to the Binance bridge.

If you are completely new, i'd strongly recommend taking your business to FTM though. There are enough bridges for you to easily transfer amongst different chains and they provide staking rewards with the Spookyswap platform. One advantage of FTM is that Andre is also building on it. Well defi is still considered as altcoins as well, I feel kinda bizarre once you pointed it out as something like defi is the best among the whole crypto environment. Every single altcoin has its own advantages so I couldn't agree defi is the best one, not to mention most defi coins are quite the same in many ways.
