Well, I don't believe that a social movement has to have a formal organization behind it and this is proven by Bitcoin right now. Or we can say that Bitcoin is a decentralized social movement...that can be the right term. Now, if the idea is to have an organization behind it because it is a social movement, that will be against the very idea of Bitcoin itself so in other words it would be a contradiction in itself. Bitcoin succeeded because of the people who believe on it and this will be the same throughout its existence.
Yes, it is true, social movements do not have to have a formal organization. And speaking of contradictions with the Bitcoin idea, I don't think it is. If Bitcoin has to form a formal organization, it can too. Bitcoin economically has provided many benefits to its users and financial freedom was felt by those who held holdings in the past. This means that Bitcoin is trusted by many people and also provides many benefits for everyone.

Bitcoin isnt a social movement by design, but it allows people to interact with trade freely, and see currency in a whole new way. The dollar is only successful because people believe in it, and people also just so happen to believe in Bitcoin. Social ideas dont have to be on purpose, sometimes things just fall into place. Wink

I agree that most people in the cryptocurrency space are just speculators, but the social movement must advance in order for these speculators to achieve their goals.

So as a result, even the speculators are promoting the social movement (which why I think there is some justification to describing Bitcoin as a pyramid scheme).

I can't call Bitcoin a social movement when the social movement aspect is secondary to most people. In other social movements people are attending rallies, make petitions, contact legislators, have political candidates. In Bitcoin social movement we just have some guys with a few thousands twitter followers write how banks are outdated and Bitcoin is the future.

Then how come there's always people saying that bitcoin will replace fiat currency? That idea won't be popular if there aren't a lot of people talking about it right? We really need to get rid of people that overhypes and exaggerates the capabilities of bitcoin, they give the wrong impression to newbies that would lead to newbies experience the reality and ending up frustrated.

People are free to express their personal opinions, and you are free to challenge their opinions. We shouldn't be getting rid of anyone.

Bitcoin and cryptocurrency globally as a social movement? Well, yes it is. It is also a financial movement.
We can see many people are moving to the crypto world. We know how many more people have pros and cons about crypto, how their points of view about crypto. And how this world reaction to crypto.
Many people change their life, their finances, and their status because of crypto, moreover Bitcoin.

But, is it regulated? No, although there are some centralized cryptos, commonly, crypto moreover Bitcoin is created for a decentralized system, no need to government, And which government will control? No one.

The social movement is generated by the individuals in their organization in relation to certain ideals, whether they are revolutionary or not, but they generate a change, in this case bitcoin is a great "weapon" to
be implemented as a new approach, it breaks paradigms and that makes it complex and difficult.

So as individuals within each of our social environments we have not been able to organize ourselves to make this social movement based on bitcoin effective. There is already noise in some places, countries and several individuals try to wake up bitcoin users so that they do not see it only as an asset to earn money.

Bitcoin has somehow turned into a kind of a social movement. But it is not really a social movement. It is simply a financial technology which is growing. It's just that Bitcoin's philosophy represents freedom especially from government control and abuses. I think this Bitcoin's core philosophy is the primary reason why it has been made as a tool by social movements in pursuit of independence from government control.

bitcoin is a cryptocurrency but there are social movements that are created during the time where bitcoin became popular and example of the movement could be the bitcoin haters and bitcoin lovers or the bitcoin supporters .
there are people that are involved between this two but are not involved in a formal organizations  . they only let thier voice heard online , in social media's or in the forum .

Wikipedia says that a social movement is a:

Quote
loosely organized effort by a large group of people to achieve a particular goal, typically a social or political one

Do majority of Bitcoiners have a common social or political goal? I would say no, because I don't think all Bitcoiners are actively trying to make Bitcoin the dominant currency, most Bitcoiners are just holding it to reap profit. I don't see any discussions about plans how to make Bitcoin replace fiat currency, everyone is just saying "when Bitcoin will replace fiat and banks its price will be $4,000,000" as if it will magically happen on its own.

Based on the Wikipedia description of a "Social Movement" ..... Bitcoin shows some signs of being a Social movement... but I will rather call it a Social experiment. The early adopters of Bitcoin was rooted in the principles of a disruption of the current "centralized" financial Banking system... so they had a common goal.

The goal was also to determine if a decentralized currency would be able to survive as a alternative to Fiat currencies that are being controlled by a centralized government and Banks.

I think the experiment was a success... Bitcoin survived and it triggered change in the financial world.  Wink  Now, centralized exchanges and large financial institutions are moving in to control Bitcoin.  Angry

The community is not calling for rallies on the streets but because Bitcoin investors are breaking free from the government's chain of control which is why having a celebrity in the Bitcoin community is making holders proud to welcome them in the community and switch to laser eyes.

Celebrities I follow do have laser eye for once on their profile pic a lot have followed this even Michael Saylor and this is to raise up to $100K movement.

I think bitcoin is a social movement community where bitcoin uses various media to introduce how it works and what is included in bitcoin, this triggers people to create communities to exchange information and lead to social movements that are allocated to certain goals
I think formal institutions ,are not really needed because bitcoin owners can control and understand the risks faced when entering the crypto world

I don't think that bitcoin or any other cryptos is a social movement neither a part of any social movement. Because bitcoin is a decentralized market, no one also controls bitcoin or leader behind bitcoin and nobody even knows the real identit6 of who invented the bitcoin.
Everyone in the bitcoin market or even the speculators knows what bitcoin is and the risks behind it. The only goal of bitcoin is to become a digital currency and can be used as a payment of any goods or services offered.

I think bitcoin is not a social movement but a personal movement because only we can control using crypto/bitcoin and only we know how many coins we have.
But if that becomes a mass adoption and all people use crypto, that is still a personal movement because people will decide to use crypto or fiat (fiat still exist).
According to https://www.britannica.com/topic/social-movement:

Quote
Social movement, a loosely organized but sustained campaign in support of a social goal, typically either the implementation or the prevention of a change in society’s structure or values.

So basically, if the society wants to use bitcoin and it happens in all places, they use social movement to ask their government to allow using crypto in their daily lives.
But a social movement is also known as a campaign for a social thing that will not relate to personal.

Bitcoin started as a software solution for payments on the internet. In that way, it is a novel solution to an economic problem. It has always had a social and political angle due to the cypherpunk background. It empowers individuals in ways that can be enlightening for those who understand it. It also leads people to want to spread the information in ways that others also benefit for it. This is why it is a social phenomena.

A movement doesn't necessarily need some kind of organization to carry it forwards. Individuals and groups can form movements about a certain phenomena in ways they like. For example, Bitcoin movement has been spearheaded by President Nayib in El Salvador. In a lot of other countries, the exchanges and open source developers do it.

So its a social phenomena with geographically distinct movements of their own, all held together by the internet community.

Do you consider Bitcoin(or cryptocurrencies) in general a social movement? If you consider so, social movements need a formal organization to support the movement. Is there a formal organization behind Bitcoin?
There's a community of people who are interested in Bitcoin for all sorts of reasons, and sometimes they can unite and organize events or encourage local legislators to make Bitcoin and other cryptos legal. But this isn't enough to call this community a social movement, IMO, because it lacks the common ideology. The interests align sometimes, but some people care about Bitcoin because they think it'll make them rich, some believe in the idea of decentralization and adhere to values of the Austrian economists, others are very privacy-focused and like it that Bitcoin can be sent without IDs, and I'm sure that within the community there are people from all parts of the political spectrum. There's also no formal organization behind Bitcoin or cryptos specifically, it's more about the community of users with Bitcointalk being a place where you can talk with lots of people from this community.

Do you consider Bitcoin(or cryptocurrencies) in general a social movement? If you consider so, social movements need a formal organization to support the movement. Is there a formal organization behind Bitcoin?

I think that could happen when Open Communities assigned with specific roles within the Bitcoin Network are created. We could have a community as the formal organization.
The communities would still be based on Bitcoin ideals/principles to avoid centralization and open the whole Network to attacks

I think this forum is enough as a form of organization, if we were to stray far from that, we will end up not following the essence of what bitcoin is, which is decentralization.

Bitcoin provides financial freedom, the freedom to control our own assets without interference from others. If bitcoin is said to be a social movement, it is also quite true because Bitcoin is used by all circles. Bitcoin is driven by developers and communities, many bitcoin communities around the world including the community on this forum.
bitcoin provides many social and financial benefits. Bitcoin for everyone and bitcoin is able to unite the differences of all the differences in this world in one community

Your bitcoin are your money and you have complete control over them if you have the private key. Basically bitcoin is not an asset made for those who are anti-government with all its centralized systems, but bitcoin is here to help people have new payment alternatives in today's modern world. The virtue of bitcoin is the decentralization of your own finances with the security and privacy that comes with it. But unfortunately not all governments legalize its function as a currency in certain countries, including many Asian countries.

Do you know the meaning of social in general? Well, that means there's no need to always have someone formally overshadow it. We operate without any government crypto protection. One thing that motivates all elements to advance Bitcoin is the value it contains has the potential to be value for the future. Everything does not need an organization, if it is able to stand alone and has quality then all will be attracted by itself. An example of Bitcoin when it was still in its infancy, was there any support from the government? no !!! But from individual to individual connected. Even cross borders without having to have a permit, just you and me (P2P).
