Congratulations to Messi for winning the Ballon d'or again! But I'm not sure if he really earned the prize this time. If the assesment scope includes the last season too, then I wouldn't be uncomfortable with it much. Because even though Barcelona were not too good, Messi was still great and had great stats. What they should have done is either:
a) base the 2021 award on performance across both 2020 and 2021, or
b) award a 2020 prize as well.

If they are going to give Lewandowski the Striker of the Year award, they are doing so because he was the best player in 2020 but didn't get a Ballon D'Or for it. 'Striker of the Year' is 'Ballon D'Or 2020' in all but name.

It seems to me that instead of Striker of the Year, they should have given him the 2020 Ballon D'Or retrospectively, and then let Messi keep the 2021 award.
That way both players get the awards, Lewandowski gets recognition for his 2020 performances, and probably France Football gets loads of praise and extra publicity for giving out two awards.

I am not entirely sure if becoming champions with your national team is enough, you need to also do it with a team that wasn't expected or hasn't won it in a long time. Like when was the last time Argentina won it? Or Italy? So, both of those teams were in a big break and suddenly they are doing much better thanks to their good players.

Messi has been playing for so long and I believe it is his first time right? Plus stats are very important and I agree that Lewandowski had one of the best stats ever but the reality is that we are talking about assists as well, put in everything from every game and Messi has less goals but his goal+assist ratio looks insane plus he won so many more things with his teams. All in all I believe that Messi was a good decision, yes they could have given it to Lewa because Messi already has so many and Lewa may never get it again, but I believe they didn't want to do injustice to an amazing year Messi had.

I think that given the fact that computing resources are becoming cheaper and AI is solving ever wider types of problems, plus the fact that all matches in modern football remain recorded on video, we hope that soon we will get an impartial assessment of who was how strong in football. I believe that this award is almost exclusively for attackers.

Not wanting to belittle other attackers, but the correct thing would be to have exclusive prize classes for goalkeeper, defender, attacker, etc.
It would be the most correct and fair with everyone, as each category would have its own scoring criteria.

As for favoring one or the other player, this could easily be eliminated with a purely critical analysis of the data (nr of correct passes, goals scored, assists, fouls, etc. and that's all) without analyzing subjective characteristics.

People are discussing whether Messi really deserved to win this prize. But I believe that he deserved to win the prize thanks to his great performance in the last season. He scored 38 goals and made 18 assists in 48 games. For a player who is 34 years old now, it is a really big achievement I think. And he is not just an ordinary player who has this kind of a season only once in a few years. He was always this good and he is a legend already.
