Maybe because he is one of the standard and best players of Real Madrid, and in addition, Croatia played in the finals of the World Cup that year with a string of victories against Argentina, Denmark, Russia, England - all of which are respectable opponents, and Luka Modric was one of the best players on the team - but he was also named tournament's best player. I think he deserved the award, even though Ronaldo is one of the best players in the world, there is no doubt about that.

Actually, I still don't know the classification of which player deserves the Ballon d'Or when talking about the championship title, of course I think Messi is no longer one of the players who will win this title, and neither is Ronaldo because these two goats are very minimal in the trophy last season.

For next year honor if mistakenly Manchester united were to win the premier league and champion league with Cristiano Ronaldo playing a very important role in those victory then he deserves to win.

It does not matter who wins the UCL, it depends on the players also, there are cases Ballon d'or winners was not among the players of the club that won UCL. Lionel Messi won the last one two years ago but Bayern Munich won champions league at the time and there are cases like that in the past.


One thing I have noticed about C. Ronaldo, he is more ambitious to win Champions League but Real Madrid is the glory he had. He has no two reasons he chose Juventus, Juventus always qualify for champions quarter final and many times semi final when Ronaldo was in Real Madrid, it could be the reason he went to Juventus to be the best club.

I hope he will play good in Manchester United, but it can never be like the Ferguson time for Man United, his stay in Manchester United may not lead to a single win for Champions League just like Juventus. I'm critically looking at Mbappe on his current form and i think he's got what most attackers has failed to adapt to; speed,accuracy,influence on pitch,body balance,skills,pace and what have you...

Well I do not think the award will have value if it is just be shared among players. I do not care if one player wins it all the time provided he deserves it then he should win. Donnarumma has been one of the best keepers in Europe for about 2 seasons now but I don't think that makes him the only suitable candidate for this year's Ballond'or. Definitely not this year anyway. or the half of last year. Even counting playing time Messi and Ronaldo have not clocked up as much as they used to simply because of sitting on the bench and because of injuries,,, so it would be highly unfair for people to give their votes to these two when others deserve it more.

There is definitely some truth to what you are saying! Certainly, Messi and Ronaldo often deserved the trophies simply because they were the best on the planet, period. But at times there are political and fame elements involved, which is really not great, but not surprising either right? That is how the world works. I am totally convinced that Messi is the all-time best, yet he must deserve the trophy yearly by achievement, not by reputation based on the past. Of course, even in a bad season he is the best striker in La Liga.

It's arose a lot of controversies lately, the Ballon D'or since Covid-19 where a lot of persons expected it to be the turn of Robert Lewandowski following his contributions with both Bayern Munich and his Poland but then, it had to come down to what it was. This time, I see a lot of competition for this as, its no longer the Messi Cum Ronaldo as it used to be. Both of the stars haven't been so awesome if you would ask me but, they've still made a worth while contribution.

Mean while, I think the top 10 list is literally it as, a lot of other names that made it to the top 30 seems like a mare decoration and probably, an appreciation of performance on the individual players. Nice one for every noted player to have made the list.

The ballon d'or is between Chelsea players and Robert lewandowski. Any one  among the Chelsea players do deserve it especially Jorginho. Lewandowski was robbed of it last year as the pandemic cause the event not to hold. If he get it this year ahead of Jorginho it is fine because Lewandowski deserve to be named among the best for his contributions to football over the years.

Reading about goalkeeper winning the award, why is Mendy (Chelsea goal keeper) not listed among the shortlist. Could it be because there was so many players from Chelsea already on the list. Mendy was phenomenal last season, keep clean sheets game after game and conceding just 4 goals in the whole champion league season. With such achievement, he deserves to be on the list. OH wait he is black, an African and also a goal keeper nevermind.

Yes I think if Lewandowski receives it is still fair not only because he was robbed of it during the pandemic, but also because he currently excellently confirms that he is worth that trophy. He still scores like a machine in all competitions, is at an outstanding fitness level and still the brilliant team player he used to be during the last season as well. He is a real team player, similar to Haaland. It has been discussed before, but I would honestly be a little bit shocked if Messi or Ronaldo took it home even though Messi won the Copa, but he has to accept that his achievements get measured by the standards he set in the past.

there is some controversy that will occur when messi gets the seventh Ballon d'or this because indeed to speak of performance no one doubts the ability of this player but the red card problem when he was still in Barcelona uniform might be one of the stumbling blocks for messi to get the title this season's ballon d'or.

This is a yearly award and not one that should consider the achievements during the whole career of the players, obviously Messi is one of the best players of all time but something like that should not count for this particular award, only what Messi did during this year should count, and since he switched teams, suffered and injury and his level has not been close to his best I think someone else should receive this award instead of him.

their performance is indeed quite good but only for individuals and last season their performance in the team was not good enough in statistics especially winning the title.

He is indeed under the two GOATS , lewy individual records isnt enough to put him on top of the list. in recent days colective records & achievements counted towards the ballon d'or qualification , domestically and nationally.
unfortunately lewy has not earned sufficient achievement in his national team , if only poland reached euro final or semifinal at least... he could get that ballon d'or award easily on top of messi and cristiano.

Keep also in mind that Lewandowski constantly delivers, this weekend he again scored two goals while Messi needed to leave the pitch during half-time. He still has his amazing moments, but it seems to me as if his speed gets lower over time and the number of amazing moments also is shrinking. He is still a terrific free-kick striker and he had some solid performances in the CL, but I don't think that will be enough.

If it is really Lewandowski that will win the award, then I am definitely happy for him and he definitely deserved it. However that list doesn't look like it is ranked properly, thats the only thing I am not entirely sure about. Like do we really believe that Messi came in second? or benzema third? Where is Ronaldo in that case? No matter what the situation is like, I have to say that Salah and Lewa were the only two players that I would give the award to this past year. Salah had a semi-decent season last season, which could be one of the reasons why he wasn't first in that list, but we are seeing how great he is once again now that he is playing well again.

A well-known fact about this guy is that he is too humble. Messi is not only an excellent player, he is smart and humble as well. If 2020 were the year, Lewandovski would be the clear and only favorite. However, in 2021 Messi is the undisputed favorite. Lewandovski has scored more goals. However, Messi has more individual stats and has won more international awards than Lewandovski. The 2021 Ballon d'Or nominated players have all done well. Messi, on the other hand, has been incredible, one step above the rest of the candidates.

I am not entirely sure if becoming champions with your national team is enough, you need to also do it with a team that wasn't expected or hasn't won it in a long time. Like when was the last time Argentina won it? Or Italy? So, both of those teams were in a big break and suddenly they are doing much better thanks to their good players.

To all those saying Lewa deserved it. It's like you have forgotten that Lewa only tremendously in 2020 but for 2021, it's a combination of both club and Country performances. Lewa only won his German league and its other cups but lost the ucl. Messi also won copa dey rey and lost ucl. Then comes country's performance, that were Messi beat Lewa hands down. All Messi haters should only pray that Lewa is awarded for his 2020 performance.
