Nowadays we need to be careful when publicly admitting to owning Bitcoin. A lot of crypto traders have been receiving threats as in the case of Daniel one of the guys from Chart Champions.

Things are escalating as, apparently, a 14-year-old kid from England got kidnapped after bragging on social media posts about having lots of money made from trading cryptocurrencies.

That's why I don't like anyone to know I'm in the Crypto business.

It doesn't matter if it's Bitcoin or fiat money, bragging is a sign of stupidity.
Kids and teenagers are going some really dumb mistakes. What if this 14 year old kid is actually lying and he never made any money? His kidnappers would be pissed and we don't know what are they doing to do with him.
I would never admit to anyone in my social circle, that I have Bitcoins. Not even my family.
Not because they are going to tell me the usual "Bitcoin is scam" BS,but because most people can't keep a secret.
I really hate people, who can't keep secrets and people, who like to gossip and spread lies.
There's a special place in hell for such people.

He is 14 years old, kids like him always do something out of mind as we did in the says. He could be just so optimistic and trust everyone around him. But yes someone should be telling him about the danger of showing off you have a ton of money whether in BTC or fiat.

What is important now is that he wasn't hurt and the suspect was apprehended already. The kid will learn his lesson after this.

Yeah, talking about privacy which is very key, it is never okey to publicly declare your assets, crypto or fiat, some people are very found of showing off in the social media, not everyone in social media have good intention, scammers are everywhere, reason why I don't discuss my portfolio in Telegram or ask opinions because too many scanners out there, people should really take security and privacy seriously. He should have a guidian to protect him since he is still a minor.

Yeah, talking about privacy which is very key...

Especially now when more awareness is being made about bitcoin and people are becoming more aware about cryptocurrency, its benefits and how addresses are somewhat anonymous. You may never know who is attracted to you for the purpose of stealing your coins after you have foolishly shown the world or declared your crypto portfolio. So we must always exercise caution.

It is much better to keep low profile and be safe than to brag to social media or to people that you are earning this kind of reasonable amount of money especially today where the world are still facing pandemic and economic crises. I can't blame also the kid for bragging his earning because he is just a kid that don't have any idea about the consequences, maybe he is proud on himself by earning that reasonable amount on his young age, good to know that he is safe and sound now. This is not only a lesson for a child but for us too to learn from this incidents.

It's is very risky , people should be extremely careful in Bitcoin transaction. I have always have that thought some years  ago when I do buy Bitcoin public because most of the people I buy from then I don't know in person or have any information about them. But now I exchange wallet to buy Bitcoin.

If there is a crime like this we must be vigilant because this is very dangerous for us as crypto users, Many people who want to live a life of luxury but they do not want to try so that everything they want can be achieved, and they envy the wealth of others so they want to seize, if we have a lot of assets then do not like to show off on social media because this will harm us because not everyone likes the results we get, In any case, personal privacy must be maintained to avoid things that we do not want.

If you don't see that then you are not living in a real-world, the world is corrupt, there are bad people and there are good people, so don't trust anyone or never tell people that you got money as you are just putting yourself into a risk of getting robbed. Once they took your bitcoin, it's hard to get that back even if these people will be arrested, so that fortune (if you have) should be kept in secret.

I guess that is the decisive issue here. While Bitcoin is harder to steal, it is also essentially impossible to retrieve afterwards even if you got the thief or robber. For many physical assets there is at least a chance to either find it or call out a reward, but that is not the case for Bitcoin if the robber is slightly familiar with how cryptocurrencies work.

If you have any investment, you need to be careful about your income, especially not share the income in social media because, in your status, all people in your circle can read that. We do not know who the bad and good people are, and if they have a bad intention, they can start doing something bad to us.

It is better we keep it for ourselves and not easily share about the income from crypto or other sources of income. It is one of the preventive ways that we can do to prevent bad people from doing something to us.

For now the crypto world is a hot conversation among the public especially with the current increase in the price of bitcoin then many people are tempted to want to have it including by means of crime as you say the incident that happened to Daniel, if we have a lot of bitcoin assets and altcoins then do not like to promote our assets this will be a big problem and can be a threat to ourselves, Because not everyone likes to see our success in the crypto world because they assume that the results we get are very easy and they don't care about the hard work we do all along, so they want to rob us of what we have from the crypto world.

There are people who are also aware of the dangers actually but are still willing to share how much they have on their wallets like the crypto influencers, I'm sure some criminals may be watching them already with plans to torture them or their loved ones. That dogecoin millionaire could be a target for these criminals, I wonder how safe his neighborhood is because he appears on interviews and shows off his robinhood and coinbase wallet.

Its not worth the fame when after that you are going to keep watching behind you when you are alone walking on the streets or eating in a restaurant.

Generally, people must be careful on what they post and planning to post online. Considering that audiences in the digital world take the information they see online differently, this could spark the interests of those who wants to get what others have. Not everything should be shared publicly because it can cause harm, especially during these times that many people are desperate to survive and thrive.

No body but my father knows that I know of Bitcoin and other Cryptos and own a little.

He never talks about it to anyone and neither do I.
I wouldn't be so sure if I were you! My father said the exact same thing, but somehow I kept receiving questions about BTCitcoin from his friends Angry

I treat Bitcoin as treasure. If you find treasure, you don't go around telling people about it.
I wouldn't be surprised if most of us would've done the same if we were that young!

but if you are silent doing your business and other thing over the net then you are safe from those kind of people.
Anything that touches the internet, isn't safe [unfortunately]!

4 years for physical assault and kidnapping of minors - these people are obviously eating some weird mushrooms and using drugs - they should have given him more recognition because he didn't kill the child and because the ransom was only £900 - maybe work for the common good in the royal palace Shocked
You have a point but initially, the ransom in question was "£10,000" + they needed to make an example of him.

those kidnappers are a dumbass. they asked for £10k but ended up agreeing to £900
Credit to his mother for having good negotiation skills Wink

but people I know irl like my family or friends I dont have an issue with telling them.
What makes you think the next person that they'd share that information with, wouldn't turn out to be the person that would rob you in the future?!

so why is he not asking for BTC as ransom,
That would've complicated the whole situation on so many levels.

What is important now is that he wasn't hurt and the suspect was apprehended already.
There are still three more on the loose!

I actually do not understand why does anyone needs to yell at public that he owns some bitcoins. It's exactly like you stand and yell I have 1 million dollars in my pocket right now. This can be a good chance for the criminals to even murder the bitcoiners. Bitcoin came to help your economic privacy so none would understand how much you own unless you tell them yourself and of course due to the price of bitcoin many people will try to somehow catch you to catch the bitcoins, I believe by increasing the price of bitcoin we will see more stories like this one.

Unless you're an influential figure with capabilities for bodyguards and such, it would definitely be dumb to publicly say that you are owning bitcoin or at least earning lots of money for that matter. That's pretty much a go signal for criminals and people who would want to take advantage of you to do their own bidding. It's better to be lowkey in things like these because not only will you stop people from doing malicious things to you in hopes of getting on your money, but would also stop unnecessary expenses in the process.

Some people just like to brag and be proud of what they have, it's embedded into our systems as humans. Now whether these people do succumb to this pride and be boastful about their earnings is entirely up to them. They just have to bear with the consequences of publicly saying that you basically own one of the biggest store of value assets in the market as of now. Which is hackers, scammers, and people who will be willing to kill you for your bitcoins in severe cases.

They havent realized how cruel this world so yeah those people keep showing off until something bad happened just like the story above , it's not something new that narcism has been quite popular.. its like new addiction especially when it comes to social media shit, they loved doing that show off on purpose to draw attention and get some recognition which its actually not cool but meaningless and moreover attracts distress & criminality.

beware just beware of this little thing .

its true and that's why some people don't admit and keep secret that they are involved in bitcoin investment because it's to avoid things like this. we must be aware that the crime in bitcoin is not only crypto scammers but also in the real life such as robbery, theft or kidnapping. therefore we also have to be more aware and careful. failure or profit that we get from bitcon let only us know it and also don't involve other people in it. it's all to avoid bad things from happening and so that our assets are also more secure.

Things are escalating as, apparently, a 14-year-old kid from England got kidnapped after bragging on social media posts about having lots of money made from trading cryptocurrencies.
Really sorry to hear this.
But, this is very risky.
There are many people who have already noticed and known that Bitcoin is something very worthy.
The Kidnapper will think that they can get the private key and get the Bitcoin of the kid in order to get money.

Actually, the criminal that may happen is not only like this. We don't know whether in online words, social media, there are hackers that are watching us. And hackers sometimes are watching whoever who are careless and showing their assets.
That is why it doesn't need to show off our crypto to the public.

That is why showing off in public will not be good as we can be their victim of the crime which we do not know who are. Hopefully, they can protect themselves and their wealth from the criminals and hide it in a secret place. But still, once we are showing off our wealth in public, sooner or later, we can become a target, especially if they know our neighbourhood and watch our lives.

Maybe keeping our investment without telling others will be the best thing for us, especially if we live in an environment that we really do not know. Even that, a crime can happen anywhere and anytime.

From the article:

Quote
According to a report by The Guardian, prosecutors said the boy was forced to call his mother and tell her that she would need to pay “£10,000 or her son wouldn’t be going home.” The boy’s mother was able to reach an agreement with the kidnappers for £900 in exchange for her son’s safe return.

So did the mother haggle with the kidnappers to get the ransom down to less than 1/10th of what they were asking?  Sounds very much like the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III back in 1973, where the tight-fisted grandfather wouldn't pay the ransom even though it would have amounted to a drop in the bucket compared to his net worth.  She must be one hell of a businesswoman.

Anyway, this was a 14-year old kid who obviously didn't know any better than to brag (sort of) on social media that he'd made money with crypto trading.  I tend to think pre-teens, teenagers, and even some older people don't realize how dangerous social media can be if you post the wrong thing, because you never know who's reading what you're writing.  I kind of wonder how much he made, though I'm sure it's probably never going to be revealed.  Seems like everyone is getting rich with various crypto-related endeavors, and apparently that even includes teenagers nowadays (though as I said, I don't know how much he made).

At least the kid is all right after that ordeal, which I'm sure must have been terrifying.  As far as the sentence goes, it didn't happen in the US, which has the highest incarceration rate in the world, so I'm not sure what everyone was expecting.  The kid wasn't seriously harmed and didn't lose any money, so how would you have it?  A life sentence?  Hopefully the jackoff kidnapper will do the entire 4 years.
