It's better if we have Bitcoin in small or large amounts, it's better to keep it a secret, not to have been exposed to the public because it is vulnerable to criminal acts that stalk us. Better to stay calm and don't show off.

I agree with previous answers that it is not safe to the same extent that it is not safe to say that you have money or other types of financial assets, such as gold, etc. Surely years ago, when Bitcoin was more unknown and worth less, one could say one owned Bitcoin without people noticing as much and therefore if attracting the attention of criminals. But today, at $60k in price, on the way to $100k, it is very dangerous. With the difference also that the thief needs you to get them: if you have gold, the thief will take it if he finds it in your house, but your Bitcoin, the thief will need you to actively transfer it to him, unless he finds your seeds. And if you happen to have it in a multisig wallet and you can't transfer it even if you want to, I don't think he will react kindly.

Things are escalating as, apparently, a 14-year-old kid from England got kidnapped after bragging on social media posts about having lots of money made from trading cryptocurrencies.

That's why I don't like anyone to know I'm in the Crypto business.

yes things like this from a few years ago also exist. robbery is not for physical money but for crypto. of threats. kidnapping and forced confiscation. which is for sure because it is too vulgar in providing information on the property owned. can become targets for crime. people should be more careful to provide any information on the internet, especially about finances and any assets.

Not only crypto, I think any personal property as well. We should not brag on social networks, it will make scammers and criminals pay attention to us, even endangering our lives. Sometimes that bragging also interferes with your daily communication, not everyone will be happy when you make money and congratulate you when you are richer than them. So we should keep it to ourselves and not make it public when it's not necessary.

Nowadays we need to be careful when publicly admitting to owning Bitcoin. A lot of crypto traders have been receiving threats as in the case of Daniel one of the guys from Chart Champions.

safe or not have bitcoin depending on the person who keeps the bitcoin. silence and save is the power to own bitcoin without any disturbance. I suggest to always be vigilant because the crypto market is increasingly being recognized by the public so you must be really vigilant to secure these crypto assets

Either fiat or crypto, its not really safe to publicly announce what you have, how much it is or how you able to do it.

Your life might be put at risk because we dont know the mindset of other people, those who are envy or having a hard time in their lives might tend to do bad things towards you.

Thus its better to keep it to yourself or with your family for your security.

It's not just crypto business, am pretty sure it applies to all the businesses as well. Having money and bragging about it is totally ridiculous. People end up getting kidnapped, dead or even scammed by their own family members. Well the kid was too young to know what he should have/shouldn't have done but at the end of the day I hope he is safe and home soon.

That's why we talk about privacy as well. It's not a small issue. It's really complicated as well. Things get messy within seconds.

Even KYC is something that takes all the information and sends it to the government and if the website gets hacked there would be addresses and personal information of the whales coming out as well.

How safe it would be for them ??

Boasting should never be done.

Agreed. There's a lot of private information should we handle and keep it save. We don't know public and we can't handle it. Like a lions roar, It's totally liar there.

Keep our data, information, and any privacy related wisely.

What a terrible story, at such a young age. It's the same for me, why should strangers know that I own crypto currencies? It's like going around and telling people you have a lot of money on your bank account. We should be more careful when it comes to money, because we don't know in which desperate situation other people are. Hearing about a lot of money can create the weirdest ideas.
I am in general not an open person when it comes to money, this might be because of my upbringing, at home we never talked about money. Also in my culture it is not so common to speak about what other people earn at work and how many assets they have. Now I only speak with my closest friends and family about money. They know I make some money from poker and invest it in crypto currencies.

Nowadays, it's really dangerous to let the public know that you have a huge amount of money in the bank, in crypto or even any thing that has a high value. Because every time you flex your luxurious things and hefty amount of money (may it be physical cash or screenshot of your e-wallet's fund) it attract people with bad intentions.

For some, it will be inspiring and motivating to work hard to achieve the same. But there are people that don't want to achieve it the hard way, but the easiest way possible. Hence, they resort to bad tactics such as stealing, kidnapping, and even murdering. There are a lot of news about those kinds of incidents, not only in crypto, but as a whole. Bad people are attracted to expensive things and everything related with money. They would do desperate measures just to get what they want, whether that would mean to risk their lives.

Stating those, it's really best to keep lowkey. It's okay to flex sometimes, but also know your limitations. You should not let the public know about the supposedly confidential matters about your life. You are responsible of your assets, so do your best to keep it safe from the eyes of the potential persons to take it away from you.

With the current price of Bitcoin, I believe with what the OP has said.
This is the main reason too why I'm not saying to anybody the amount of Bitcoin that I'm holding (even though it is just a small amount). Publicly saying that you have a reasonable amount of Bitcoin will lead to threats and even kidnapping like what happened to the kid.

Even though there are some who knows that I'm holding some BTC, I'm not saying the total amount. Bragging your holdings online will not benefit you so just be silent if you are holding some especially if you hold a huge amount.

The title of this thread is definitely misleading. The public statement dedicately about owning bitcoin has nothing to do with your safety. If you state that you own 10 thousands of USD, it can create danger around you and probably you'll become a victim of crime, it depends on your relatives and the neighborhood. Most likely, in poor countries you can become a victim of crime if you state your budget/capital in public.

And this child... Parents must control their children, this is just 14 years old kid who has no idea what he is doing and probably was thinking that he would appear cool for stating something like that. And people who use this kind of situations are just an useless humans (if we can call them humans).

Anyone has to control their emotions, are they rich (I am talking about adults at the moment)? You have to either hide it (which is meaningless) or upgrade the security of your house/family members.

I guess showing off on social media of your assets , possessions and confidential information  is never safe and would attract unnecessary attention ,
but if instead of showing the possession of bitcoins if he had posted for any other asset or gold it would have attracted some attention too , I just wanna add that people should be responsible about the stuff they share on the internet and be more careful and cautious .

its always good to be a anonymous even you owned huge amount because these kind of asset isn't really safe because you don't know what will be the situation of crypto in your country since most people don't see it safe for everyone to be involved., and yes if you really care in your private information in the first place probably you will not bragging that you own crypto..

It is not a good idea to brag in the first place. Boasting and pride can destroy anyone and that is what has happened to the kid. Why just that kid alone when we have so many of this people who brag about their riches on social media. It is a pity he got kidnapped, maybe England is not a secured place anymore. This is also a lesson to all those who have the habit of telling others about so much bitcoin they have even when they are lying about it.

That makes complete sense. Social media is a vast platform and it has become relevantly easy to identify anyone's identity through these social media platforms.
It is of more risk if the person disclosing their crypto assets is a well known personality on the social media.
The risk of physical harm, kidnapping, theft etc.. becomes more easy for the criminal than to hack in their way to the persons wallet.
These kind of activities generally happen when the person is holding large amount of assets.
Only a fool would brag about his wealth on the internet.

the problem of society is exhibitionism, if we look at social networks for example, we easily realize that people are constantly posting luxuries to attract attention... when the person is someone almost anonymous, who prefers to have more privacy then in the community where they live in real world starts to be seen as suspect by neighbors, this creates pressure on people and for this reason many people when they have something immediately are showing off to show society that they also have something.

of course it is dangerous for someone to say: " I have X bitcoin knowing that 1 BTC = $60,000 "

but eventually they will ask the person: " what do you do for a living to make money? " the person will have to say, the point is to be smarter when it comes to security and who to talk and deal with in the real world

I know how eager it is to declare your crypto assets. Sometimes I get too excited that I just stay indoors so I don't end up telling people how excited I am. Announcing to everyone that you're a bitcoin holder basically puts a target on your back and everyone will start wanting what's yours. Desperate people won't mind if it requires you to do the transfer or not.

back in 2012-13. saying i had my hoards was not that big a deal. it was only a couple $k
but now even if i down play how much i have and just say i mess around with 1-2 coins. it perks up soo many ears and you start seeing people try getting a little too interested.

i resorted to just saying "international currency trading" it solves many conversational issues. you dont have to sound/appear as a 'nerd' explaining bitcoin. you dont have to make it sound like you have wealth. you dont have to going into huge detail.

if i get to know someone and they want more detail. fine. but i dont do the same initial conversation about how i make money as i did 8-9 years ago.

heck even on this forum i have never actually admitted exact value i have. and no one needs to know, and no one should be asking

I DO NOT TRADE OR ACT AS ESCROW ON THIS FORUM EVER.
Please do your own research & respect what is written here as both opinion & information gleaned from experience. many people replying with insults but no on-topic content substance, automatically are 'facepalmed' and yawned at

Nowadays we need to be careful when publicly admitting to owning Bitcoin. A lot of crypto traders have been receiving threats as in the case of Daniel one of the guys from Chart Champions.

Things are escalating as, apparently, a 14-year-old kid from England got kidnapped after bragging on social media posts about having lots of money made from trading cryptocurrencies.

That's why I don't like anyone to know I'm in the Crypto business.
Stay lowkey and you should be fine because those people who are experiencing criminality is to those people who cant really avoid on telling on what and how many they do own.

Thats why it isnt surprising that they do really put theirselves into danger thats why you should really be careful on opening your mouth because somewhere around is really hearing something.

Dont tell out your profits or on how you do make big money and just continue to invest and do what you do so that you wont really be in danger.

In short, just mind our own business. There's no need to brag or disclose it to social media about how you are doing in crypto or if you are into crypto. Better keep it to yourself. You will find out that you will have a peace of mind dealing with other people if they don't know you are into crypto. Some people are just going public just to feed their ego, boasting it to social media that they know crypto. But if you are here long enough, you will keep silent about this. You know better.
