Yesterday I created a post about a service to forward bitcoin from exposed keys (called bitdrain).
Today I see my post is completely gone, but I also did not receive any kind of message. Was this post removed by the mods?
-> Why? It does not seem to be breaking any forum rule. One could argue about the potential to be abused but the same goes for any brainwallet hunting tools or bitcoin mixers which are discussed plenty.. It could be a scam and has no reputation? The nature of the tool makes it hard to prove not, but you can't build a reputation without starting from 0. Again, bitcoin mixers, trading and other tools discussed here have similar potential problems.
-> How? If mods want to censor a post, is it not normal practice to just remove the link, or at least give a notice to the op? I find it really odd there is no trace of the post or its removal.
If it was not moderated, is there a bug that caused my post to be lost?

There will always be an automated forum PM when someone other than you deletes your post. I take it that you didn't receive any?
Are you sure that the post was created in the first place (do you have a URL pointing to it in your browser history)?

That's the post indeed. I posted it under project development, where I found most related content on private key hunting and alike. But maybe I should post it under service announcements. Thanks.
Still, wouldn't the post normally be moved instead of deleted?

You don't get notifications when a post is moved to another board, but it also shouldn't be disappearing from your post history suddenly.

From what I know, there's no PM on removal of topics. Only for posts. Also from what I understand, the service can be used for stealing, hence may be seen as an illegal tool. And illegal stuff is against the rules, this would be my take for the reason of deletion.

Looks like the thread is deleted by moderator, but there's bug on forum automated PM.
IIRC, threads and posts can be moved to trashcan by the mods and there would not be any notification message sent to the user, probably because the post can be reinstated by an admin or a global mod. I believe this is used if the mod taking the action does not want to delete the post permanently.

From what I know, there's no PM on removal of topics. Only for posts. That would be my guess too. I've never had one of mine removed, but I do know users don't receive a PM if a topic they posted in gets removed. It might be the same for whoever created the topic. Also from what I understand, the service can be used for stealing, hence may be seen as an illegal tool. And illegal stuff is against the rules, this would be my take for the reason of deletion. But stealing itself isn't against forum rules, and I don't think this post should be disallowed. Sure, you'd have to be dumb to use it, but I do believe in this: Should never have put the temporary illusion of safety above personal liberty.. ie tagging and chasing away “likely scammers” ~
This forum started acting like protecting idiots is more important than letting users express their free wills..

Then thread about unknown mixer, exchange and custodial wallet should be removed as well since it could be used for stealing.
Indeed, you're right. I already understood that from LoyceV post. However, I know that the forum has a rule about illegal stuff, which may be somewhat fuzzy. I don't know what else could have been the reason for the deletion.

it's weird bitcointalk bother to send PM only for removed post. My guess is it's a database thing: Deleting one post requires only 1 PM. Deleting one topic can require thousands of PMs. However, I know that the forum has a rule about illegal stuff, which may be somewhat fuzzy. I don't know what else could have been the reason for the deletion. Asking for someone's private keys is not illegal, just heavily frowned upon. And that's coming from someone who has asked for private keys.OP already created a new topic, which hasn't been deleted yet.

...Yet TryNinja's bot handles that nicely. My take is that it doesn't work.. because it's not implemented. I don't expect it to be hard to implement as one mail per post, but then it may cause bitcointalk mails be seen as spam by various mail services. And if it's done as one mail with all the relevant posts in it, then the mail may become big. OP already created a new topic, which hasn't been deleted yet. I know. ...and I guess that only the mod who has removed the topic can tell why he has done that.

However, I know that the forum has a rule about illegal stuff, which may be somewhat fuzzy.
All the rules and the enforcement of them are fuzzy at best--except for plagiarism, which I've always found somewhat baffling. It's against the rules to offer illegal services or products, but you can post something that's obviously scammy even if it isn't technically illegal, and known scammers are free to keep being members here....and I could go on. I think I had a thread deleted once or twice, and I never received a PM notifying me of it. With deleted posts, I've always gotten the standard moderator PM. OP, you probably realize both of those situations are what happens by now, so hopefully you've had your dilemma solved. I didn't look at what you posted, so I can't comment as to why it got deleted. A lot of times it depends on the judgement of whatever moderator received a complaint or saw a thread that they thought was inappropriate, and again that's part of the fuzziness of forum moderation here.

Deleting one topic can require thousands of PMs. I just checked modlog and found this. Looks like the thread is deleted by moderator, but there's bug on forum automated PM. When a thread is "deleted" it is actually moved to another sub, the trashcan. The OP (and everyone else who is not forum staff) does not have permission to view threads in trashcan, so they are unable to see the thread in their post history (the same with anyone who has posted in that thread), and their post count will not reflect posts in the thread.

I want to say thanks for the elaborations on my question, I think it's very valuable that this forum takes these meta questions serious and they are debated.

I find your lack of faith in Bitcoin disturbing.

When a thread is "deleted" it is actually moved to another sub, the trashcan. Just a small correction. A mod/GM has 2 options to delete a topic : - "Remove topic". Nobody can see the topic anymore and if it needs to be restored, only an admin can do it (via the admin panel I guess, so it's still a bit annoying). - "Move to the Trashcan". Only the Staff can still see the topic, and if it needs to be restored, an admin or a GM can do it easily (just an another move).

Are you sure that “remove topic” isn’t just moving the thread to another “trashcan-like” sub that all mods don’t have permissions to access, and the thread is moved to this sub in those situations? I think it would be very non-optimal if a thread was really “deleted” but is still available in database backups somewhere.

Look like you have again posted the topic here Bitdrain: automatic drain/forward tool for exposed keysI am not sure how your tool works but i have a feeling that you are asking to send the exposed private key ? Newbies can enter their private keys unknowingly and you could have access to their funds Obligatory noob warning: don't enter your active non-exposed private keys here (or anywhere else online)

Mmmm I found this : Deleting Topics You can remove an entire topic, including all of the replies, by going to the bottom of the topic and clicking on the "Remove Topic" button.
Restoring Deleted Posts and Topics Deleted posts and topics can only be restored if a recycle board has been created. Moderators should ask their forum administrator whether a recycle bin has been enabled.
You are right when you say that when a topic is deleted it is moved to the trashcan, but in fact there are 2 trashcans
