To have all our emergency funds in Bitcoin isn't  that a good idea in my opinion, since anything can happen due to Bitcoin volatile nature, maybe you can decide to have small potion of it in Bitcoin and the rest should be in Fiat Incase of any urgent needs arise.
You are speaking from both sides of your mouth, Emergency fund should not be kept in bitcoin or any volatile assets so that volatility doesn't affect it when we need it to solve urgent needs.

Keeping it in more than one form is good, but we can always choose less volatile packages like stable coins, government bonds which are easily liquidated, in bank and in physical cash. This can also be seen as spreading the risks of one channel failing at the point of emergency. If one is not reachable, you can kickstart solving the emergency with that from the available channel while you work on retrieving funds from other channels to follow up the emergency.

Try not to keep your stables in an exchange, it can be out of reach or lost if the exchange is hacked. Those that kept most of their emergency fund in Binance might be in a very difficult position if they had emergencies within the last 24 hours and counting. There are open-source multi-coin non custodial wallets like cake wallet that you can hold them. Always practice self-custody

No this is not correct please, emergency funds should never be kept in bitcoin for several reason, some being that when real emergency happens and the money is in bitcoin, it may take time and processes to convert them to fiat and that may cause seripus problems. Another reason os that the value may change so significantly that it will defeat the purpose of keeping it when it is not enough to cover the need for it. You know price of bitcoin fluctuates, so keeping the emergency funds in bitcoin means that the value will also be fluctuating and that brings lots of uncertainties into it.

Emergency funds should be kept in fiat and readily available to be used when the need arises. If possible holding them as cash is better than in the credit or debit car or even bank.

. Emergency funds should be kept in cash.
Why would you even keep emergency funds in cash? That alone can render it not worth an emergency funds because you can get tempted to spending it. Just keep it where you can access it when needed but not where that can render it not useful for the purpose when it's needed. However, regardless of whichever method that you choose, it  won't be a problem if you can keep it safely for the purpose.

Is it really important how you keep your emergency funds ?, I think you can decide to keep it in fiat or you want to keep it in bitcoin, the most important thing is that when you have an emergency that you need money  will have the opportunity of having access to your money, having a back up funds is important, if you want to be keeping your emergency and backup funds in cash is also good, it’s essential to have access to that money all the time because you absolutely don’t know when you’re going to have an emergency to use the money.
I don't think cash is inappropriate for an emergency fund in all cases. It's like combining the problem of saving money and controlling personal spending. If you regularly make unnecessary purchases from your emergency fund, then keeping the same money in the bank is not going to change your spending habits. Because you can probably withdraw money from there whenever you get the chance. I think the problem is not the existence of cash, but rather the lack of adherence to the purpose for which the money was set aside. Again, even if you decide to keep all your emergency fund money in the bank, there may be some limitations. There may be sudden banking service closures, problems with withdrawals, and situations when you need money immediately. So it may be realistic to determine how much of your emergency fund you keep in cash and how much in the bank according to your situation. However, I think that no matter how you keep it, the money should be available when needed and not mixed with normal personal expenses.

Emergency funds should be kept where it can be gotten without much of delay, meanwhile the best place to keep our emergency funds should be in our local fiat so it can be easily get to when needed.

So it may be realistic to determine how much of your emergency fund you keep in cash and how much in the bank according to your situation. However, I think that no matter how you keep it, the money should be available when needed and not mixed with normal personal expenses.
Split approach between cash and bank savings is usually the safest setup. Emergency funds do have just a job to do. Being available for you when things turns out wrongly. If all is being kept in  the bank, you can be lock out if there is app downtime. And if you should keep all in cash u will face impulse spending and also theft.

Splitting around your emergency cash between bank and cash stash actually gives a fast access without taking on price swings. The man purposely and key is completely separating it from your Bitcoin investment so to avoid a forced  sell  during a market crash.

Now you may have a question that how much emergency fund should an investor keep ready.  In this case, if an investor's income is stable or fixed, then the investment journey can be started by keeping the amount of all expenses for the previous three months as an emergency fund.

I would imagine the majority of investors into bitcoin are not coming to bitcoin by already having three months of cash for their expenses in place, and if they do come to bitcoin with that level of extra cash, they may well be better off to invest 1/2 of that into bitcoin and build their bitcoin up at a rate similar to building up their back up funds, and sure I don't see any problem in building the bitcoin up at a faster rate.. even though sure the end goal might be getting the back up funds somewhere in the 3-ish months of their expenses category - and yeah, there could be differences between investors who have stability in their income/expenses as compared with guys who do not, and guys who do not have certainties in their income/expenses would likely need to keep more back up funds to a count for such uncertainties.

Even though each guy can choose his balances, it seems many cases of getting in to bitcoin and treating bitcoin with some intension and seriousness would likely end up building up back up funds and bitcoin simultaneously - otherwise if a guy has almost no bitcoin, yet at the same time he has a bunch of cash, then that seems quite imbalanced on the side of cash, which would likely mean that he is either not very serious about bitcoin or that he is overly whimpy about bitcoin.

Of course, whimpiness versus aggressiveness are personal choices, yet for any bitcoin investor either of the levels or some variation in between should be reached with intention rather than by accident or out of ignorance.

[edited out]
Earlier on in my investment journey, i didn’t really didn’t have much of a choice than to keep my backup money in local currency or whichever currency that was most liquid and least volatile at the time because i surely didn’t  want to expose the back up money to exchange rate fluctuations or to an assets whose value can drop when i suddenly need cash.

But as the pile of backup funds continued to grow, it got to a point where the opportunity cost of leaving everything sitting in cash started to feel kinda heavy for, and at that stage i could only think of diversifying part of those reserves into USDT; this didn’t mean that i was trying to create another investment portfolio in form of USDT, the main reason behind that move was that my trade-offs shifted proportionately as my overall financial position got stronger.

At the end of the day, you just gotta keep adjusting the balance of your situation as it improves, while still protecting the core purpose of the emergency fund simultaneously as well.

I have had similar experiences, and it seems that early in my bitcoin investing journey, I was so reluctant to keep cash, but then when some shortage of income and/or increases in expenses come along, it is nice to have options.. rather than having to scramble to figure out what to do and what to sell first to come up with the needed money.

So yeah, it seems that the longer that we are building and maintaining our bitcoin, the more we might feel comfortable in keeping more and more money in cash, since we know that our bitcoin is working for us, even though it also has long periods of ups and downs in its path.. So then if we are building bitcoin and our cash is also building up, we might also start to think that we have too much money in our local currency.. so yeah, there could be other places to put it, especially if our bitcoin is building and maintaining well, and also if we have various forms of cash that are available that we can draw from first if we have some urgent situation, and even in an urgent situation, there likely are not too many scenarios that we we would need the equivalent of weeks and weeks of our expenses all at once, even though we could end up having various expenses that continue to draw from our back up funds and as we are depleting whatever back up funds that we have, we might have to consider other resources that we have available that we can draw from, and yeah, the more depleted that we get, then we may well end up running out of resources, and have nothing left but bitcoin to draw upon.  None of us can really anticipate all of the situations that we might come into, yet we can still try to prepare so that we are not easily taken out and we have sufficient resources available, and if we ever go through periods of loss of income and/or increases in expenses, we may well end up being quite proud of ourself to have not had to touch even 1 satoshi of our bitcoin stash in order to resolve the situation that we had found ourselves in.

That was when I suggested that, he should rather hold whatever money he earns in bitcoin but it should be treated as an emergency fund and not his savings or investments which means that, whenever there is an emergency, he can withdraw without guilt and the reason for this is that, you'll agree with me that if maybe, we plan our emergency funds per weekly and maybe you set aside $50 for weekly emergencies, you would agree with me that, if one leaves a peaceful life, there might not be any emergency for a whole week and for such weeks when there are no demand for the Fund and for such weeks, the money might then be counted as his investment.
When you build an emergency fund with Bitcoin, you will have to face some uncertainties.

I assume that you need $500 for an emergency. You may have calculated that amount and put it in Bitcoin. But when your emergency situation arises, the market price is significantly lower, so selling your Bitcoin may not be enough to get the necessary money. Then you will have to raise money from other sources, or sell a larger part of your investment. Which will ruin your long-term plan. Even if it were logical to keep the emergency fund in Bitcoin, there would be no need to keep a separate fund called an emergency fund.

Again, it is unreasonable to consider the money saved for that week as investment money just because there was no emergency in a week. Just because there was no danger, there is no guarantee that the money will not be needed in the future.
Yeah. Emergency funds and investment funds should be used for different purposes. Saving it in Bitcoin can be a good idea but we all understand that Bitcoin is a volatile asset, the best approach is to invest for the long term.

It is not a good idea at all to have emergency funds in bitcoin, and if a guy has absolutely no cash or other resources to use for emergency funds, then he has no choice but to tap into his bitcoin, which may well be at a time that is not of his choosing and may also not be a good time for tapping into the bitcoin.

Even if the bitcoin is in profits, it may well not be a good idea to be stuck with no option except bitcoin.  The cash is supposed to give us options about which we choose to spend, but if we don't have any cash, and all we have is bitcoin, then we have to spend from our bitcoin.

And, of course, several times, I have tried to suggest to guys that building bitcoin can take 4-10 years or longer and along the way bitcoin is going to be up, down and sideways, and the mere fact that bitcoin is up does not provide enough justification to either stop buying it or to sell some of it.. and so if guys are seriously trying to build their bitcoin holdings, then they likely are going to need to continue to buy for 4-10 years or longer before they might change strategies.

Of course, there are guys who come to bitcoin, and they do not realize that bitcoin is an investment and that the timeline for investing in bitcoin is 4-10 years or longer.  Their thinking might be sloppy and undisciplined, so sometimes there are needs to learn and needs to reinforce building the bitcoin and buying it every week for 4-10 years or longer and the seriousness of the investment thesis is reinforced, and part of the reinforcing of the bitcoin investment thesis involves building up side-funds that are in cash and that will cover fluctuations in income/expenses so that bitcoin can continue to be bought during the period that the bitcoin holdings are still being built up...so yeah, an overwhelming majority guys are going to be better off to be keeping some cash so that they do not have to sell any of their bitcoin and so that they can continue to build their bitcoin stash by buying only techniques.. since even the process of selling bitcoin can detract the serious bitcoin investors from continuing to build their bitcoin holdings because they might get put into a waiting posture rather than a posture that involves ongoing, persistent, consistent, regular and perhaps even aggressive buying of bitcoin.

The price changes make it a bit risky to hold Bitcoin as an emergency fund, it’s very risky to depend on your Bitcoin when an emergency arrives. It’s better not to keep emergency funds in Bitcoin, rather to keep them in cash. Instead of investing money you may need in short periods in something that the price is unpredictable.

Well.  At least it seems that you understand the idea, and you might consider ways to be a bit more adamant about the need to build and maintain back up funds that are in cash while bitcoin stash building is likely to be happening simultaneously, and many of us know that it tends to take quite a bit of time to really build up a decently good sized bitcoin stash, even for guys who have relatively good income and resources available to them, and surely guys who are more serious and focused on balancing their bitcoin building and the strengthening of their cashflow management (including back up funds), then those guys may well end up outperforming guys who have way more resources than what the more poor person has.. .but ongoing focus and organization can still put the poor person in an advantageous position based on his balancing the use of the discretionary funds that he has in terms of ongoingly (perhaps weekly) considering how much to allocate towards 1) bitcoin investing, 2) back up funds and/or 3) discretionary consumption.

Yes we do, because some people are still  backward in knowledge and reasoning, and it's a big shame that someone that has been here for a long time is the one suggesting such a pathetic and myopic idea, which may cost him his investment, if he is even investing in Bitcoin. When you keep your emergency funds in Bitcoin, you are gambling with it, by trying to make profit from it, which should not have been the case if it's is kept in fiat that is stable, and with no volatility to worry off.

Nothing is as bad as facing an emergency that threatens your bitcoin holdings with an emergency funds kept in bitcoin that has really depreciated in value because of the volatility of the market. That shows that you are not serious or ready to invest and hold strong for years.
That sounds rude, although we know that there are people who are still holding their emergency funds in Bitcoin. The thing is some folks seem to take this inflation stuff very serous that they can't sit and watch inflation coming to eat their money up so they feel saving it in Bitcoin will be the best idea but it's definitely not moreover the money is not something they are holding for longer period of time rather, it is something they will spend within a short term so even though there's inflation I Believe the value will never drop to the point where it can't go a Long way in terms of figuring out emergency.

The inflation (or the debasement of the fiat) is justification to not keep as much back up funds, so 4-6 months may well become greatly unmanageable and losing value faster than it can be replaced.

Yet, debasement/inflation is not justification for not keeping 1-2 months of back up funds in cash, and yeah, we work towards having 3 months of cash and maybe more if we are ongoingly building our bitcoin, then we might feel justified in keeping higher levels of cash, even though the cash is ongoingly losing purchasing power, it still comes in quite handy to have it but yeah, we have to pay attention to our balance and it likely is quite a bit smarter to make sure that the bitcoin is growing way faster than the cash, especially when the cash gets up to higher amounts, we might want to make sure that the cash is not losing value as fast, so we might consider alternate ways of keeping it to try to preserve some value while trying to also pay attention to its liquidity characteristics and lack of volatility characteristics, too.

However, Since emergency is something that could happen without us noticing it then it is wise to store it in a place where we can access it freely or without experiencing anything like drop in value or even finding it difficult to access it. So in this case saving it in Bitcoin isn't the best, we need to understand that whatever that enters in our Bitcoin investment can't be access so easily so for that the idea of saving our emergency money in Bitcoin is not valid.

We might not always know how accessible our funds are or even their lack of volatility until we are practicing and getting used to a variety of situations that happen from time to time....and yeah, it would be kind of problematic if we kept all of our cash in one place (such as at our house) and our house burned down or something unexpected like that..so maybe we keep 1/3 of our cash at our house, 1/3 in a bank and 1/3 at some other location.. and yeah, for each person this will be different and sometimes logistically challenging to create and maintain in reasonable ways.

I think greed and ignorance is the reason why some people feels emergency fund can be invested in Bitcoin. Some investors dont understand the risk behind this, thru think it is something that they csn try and succeed with it at the end. Bitcoin investment is what things are suppose to be done properly and if you try to do things just the way you want you may end up making mistakes that can affect the investment but some people dont understand this risk of investing emergency fund.

It seems like a basic knowledge that normal guys should be able to figure out, and sure, I don't expect that guys are geniuses, but some things are logical when we think about them, and yeah, maybe we come to bitcoin and our math skills are not very good, yet if we are buying bitcoin on a regular basis, then we might need to make sure that we improve our math so that we do not make any mistakes, so basic knowledge becomes being able to add up all of our income and add up all of our expenses, and then to subtract our expenses from our income in order to make sure that we have left over funds that we are able to use to invest, save and discretionarily consume.

Invest and save are two different categories.  Invest  in bitcoin.  Save in dollars (or whatever might be the fiat that our bills are paid in).

Investing doesn't have to be a trial and error process. If you don't understand yet, it's better to start with someone who understands Bitcoin firsthand. This way, even if you're just starting out you won't make mistakes that lead to greed which can become a burden before you even start investing.

The reason for ignorance is part of someone who does not want to fight for good so they are easier to say that because there are factors that make them immediately try without any further knowledge and many people why do not experience many risks, because they realize that in investing in Bitcoin more or less they have to know the way and knowledge so that their continuation will depend on their personality and it feels like it will be difficult to continue when they experience risks more quickly which makes their fighting spirit in investing decrease as they quickly get risks and these risks are actually the ones they create themselves before starting because they already know that they lack knowledge but they do not aim for knowledge from those who have long started in the world of investing in Bitcoin.

To have all our emergency funds in Bitcoin isn't  that a good idea in my opinion, since anything can happen due to Bitcoin volatile nature, maybe you can decide to have small potion of it in Bitcoin and the rest should be in Fiat Incase of any urgent needs arise.

I don’t know how many times they will tell you guys this thing. All your emergency funds should be kept in fiat only. No portion of your emergency should be kept in bitcoin. Your emergency funds have nothing to do with bitcoin, it is only your investment that you are holding for long term is the only one that you should hold in bitcoin.  I don’t know what you want to achieve by keeping part of your emergency funds in bitcoin, but I can tell you for free that it is not a good idea and you will regret it.

Common issue with some people. They think that its still good to hide their emergency funds on their investment like Bitcoin, because for hoping that they can also earn a profit if the price pumps.

But the problem is emergency situation is unpredictable. Then imagine all the hustle experience they could get, if they are in actual situation.

So the ideal thing to do with those matters, is to keep it in fiat. Then separate their rainy day funds for risky matters. They could stay away with more bigger issues, if they know how to handle their money.

Since there is an issue of inflation, it is said to keep an amount equivalent to 3 to 6 months of expenses as a backup fund. I do not think there is a need to keep more than this.

In this thread, I have repeatedly asserted that guys better have pretty big justifications for holding 6 months of cash, so it seems a bit inappropriate to be talking nonsense about keeping 6 months or more worth of cash unless either your bitcoin stash is already quite big or you have some pretty damned good reasons.... so let's talk about getting our back up funds up to 3 months. .and then going from there, since it is quite misleading to be proclaiming it is a good idea to have 6 months worth of cash.. especially given how fast cash is debasing in value and poor people will be spending their full time accumulating cash without every buying any bitcoin if they are trying to keep their cash up to that high amount.
I see guys who are mostly interested in building their backup funds up to 6 months as just making up reasons to stack up cash in preference to their Bitcoin investment. IMO they're really getting their priorities wrong. Your emergency fund shouldn't have more priority than your Bitcoin investment.

Now coming to the aspect of having enough Bitcoin, it's more than obvious that most guys following up on this thread have little stash, so it becomes important that more focus should be given to accumulating Bitcoin, while also building backup funds alongside it. 3 months is enough, funds should be redirected into increasing aggressiveness in buying Bitcoin. It's never a good decision to stack up cash unnecessarily because it would still lose value, Bitcoin should have more priority because it has more chances of preserving and increasing the value of our funds on the long-run.
It would not be right to conclude that someone is looking for an excuse to avoid buying Bitcoin just because they want to have a backup of 6 months of expenses. Instead, you need to consider the financial situation of the investor. Maybe two people have the same monthly expenses. But one of them has a regular job, other family members also earn, and if they lose their job, they are likely to find a new job quickly. But the other person may have an irregular income, a lot of family responsibilities, and is also at risk of not being able to work for several months. Do you think the same amount of emergency fund would be enough for both of them?

For the first person, maybe three months of expenses may be enough, according to his opinion. But for the second person, if he wants to keep an emergency fund of six months to ensure his safety, it may be difficult to call it unreasonable.

I see guys who are mostly interested in building their backup funds up to 6 months as just making up reasons to stack up cash in preference to their Bitcoin investment. IMO they're really getting their priorities wrong. Your emergency fund shouldn't have more priority than your Bitcoin investment.

For the first person, maybe three months of expenses may be enough, according to his opinion. But for the second person, if he wants to keep an emergency fund of six months to ensure his safety, it may be difficult to call it unreasonable.

I think your argument is quite logical. But we should also consider another aspect of this discussion.Just because two people have the same monthly expenses doesn't mean they will have the same financial situation or need the same amount of emergency fund. Income stability family responsibilities other family members' sources of income existing savings and the possibility of being unemployed for a few months all are important here.

Someone who has a steady job and other family members also earn money may find an emergency fund equal to three months of expenses sufficient. On the other hand someone with irregular income and more family responsibilities may want to save six months or more of their expenses for their financial security. This is not an unreasonable decision. So it would not be right to conclude that someone is looking for an excuse to avoid buying Bitcoin just because they want to save six months of expenses as an emergency fund. It is necessary to first understand their real financial situation. Having a large emergency fund is not always a good decision. And having a small emergency fund is not always wise. However one thing needs to be considered separately. Saving a reasonable amount of money for financial security and waiting to complete all possible financial preparations before starting to buy Bitcoin is not the same thing. There is no mandatory rule that one cannot start buying Bitcoin until one has a six month emergency fund. If one already has some backup fund in hand and has real discretionary income left after meeting essential expenses then one can start Bitcoin accumulation with a reasonable portion of that money. At the same time one can gradually strengthen one's backup fund.

There is no such thing as everyone having to divide the money in the same proportion. Some people will give more importance to emergency fund according to their situation while others can allocate relatively more money to Bitcoin accumulation. The main thing is to create a balance that is possible to maintain in the long term by understanding one's income expenses, family responsibilities and financial risks. Our goal should be to build Bitcoin holdings while maintaining financial security not to create a situation where one is forced to sell one's Bitcoin in an unfavorable market due to a sudden expense.

It would not be right to conclude that someone is looking for an excuse to avoid buying Bitcoin just because they want to have a backup of 6 months of expenses. Instead, you need to consider the financial situation of the investor.

Trying to first build your back up funds before starting your Bitcoin accumulation will only successfully delay your Bitcoin accumulation, so it is wise to start your Bitcoin accumulation right away, once your discretionary income is available, and you can be investing and putting down your emergency funds alongside it simultaneously, so pausing one for the other is not ideal.

As for the size of your emergency funds, I think that an emergency funds that can sustain you and your investment for a period of three month is ok, irrespective of your financial standing, because that is a lot of time to get another job or another source of discretionary income, if their is a case of loss of job in the future.
