That part is true.  Basic needs are sorted out first, and what is left over is discretionary income (or it can also be called disposable income).

Discretionary/disposable income can be used to invest, save (create back up funds such as emergency funds and/or reserve funds) and/or discretionarily spend, and yeah, of course if a person does not have sufficient discretionary/disposable income (funds), then he cannot invest, since if he used non-discretionary money then he would be using money that he needs for basic expenses which would be non-discretionary funds or non-disposable funds.

Your point are valid, and to have an effective investment journey one need to take sort out all these necessarily things or expenses in order to get balancing without any distraction. Investing money you will need anytime soon into bitcoin is a big investment mistakes, and this are some of the things some newbies still get confused on. After sorting out all this expenses money, then any money that left is a discretionary income which can be invested in bitcoin. Example now, if I have 400k and my basic needs can reach like 300k, let's assume I have 100k discretionary income, but I can also decide to deduct some percentage from that 100k by keeping 40k for emergency savings 10k for my enjoyment. With all these, even if bitcoin price dips, nothing would affect me and I can still be holding bitcoin potentially.

I have said it before that, for someone who doesn't even have an emergency funds and wants to go into the industry, instead of wanting to wait to get an emergency fund gathered, I would rather prefer that you save your emergency funds in bitcoin so you can be on a safer side.
Emergency funds shouldn't be in bitcion because you are already investing into bitcoin and there must be a balance between the cash on you and your bitcoin investment so that, you don't keep too much cash on your or have too much bitcoin on you with little cash that will make you end up selling your bitcoin because you need cash.

If your emergency funds is in bitcion then you are not save from losses because if it happens that a real life emergency hits you and bitcoin price is down below your entry point, your emergency funds will depreciate and you will sell at loss. Your emergency funds should be in fiat for easy access when you are hit with real life emergency.

I agree with your point, as no one knows when actually emergency can happen, and the purpose of emergency funds is to protect the investment from any unexpected situation that may disturb our investment. That’s why it not available for every new or old investors to put all their available money into bitcoin without having a proper financial plan that will make them to be consistent with their buying. And I think beginners should also understand that, they have bitcoin don’t mean they are financially prepared for the emergency. because if they refuse to keep an emergency funds separate from bitcoin, when emergency comes it may force investor to sell at loss and solve the problem which you never planned for, that’s reason why having emergency funds aside is very important, that can make the investment to keep moving without any form of distraction.

It's a mistake that ruins the investment of many beginners, sometimes it's not about not having it intact but leaving the investment to focus on it when there's enough to build it together with the investment. While some overlook the emergency funds there are others who use it as an excuse to delay their investment.
To them they might be doing the right thing but in reality, delay is dangerous when the discretionary funds is available moreover both investment and emergency funds can be simultaneously built.

LOL. I think saving your emergency fund in bitcoin it is as if you are just trying to play smart to invest your emergency fund, but now it is not refer as part of your hodling,  it is on it own as emergency fund. What is the essence of you keeping your emergency fund in bitcoin and you know bitcoin is very volatile and if the price of Bitcoin falls drastically do you still leave the emergency fund in bitcoin? If you still panic to convert it when the price of Bitcoin drops it means you know what you are doing, by trying to make profit from your investment.  If the price of Bitcoin drops and you still keep your emergency fund in bitcoin without tampering with it, it means you are hodling your emergency fund and it is not longer an emergency fund but part of your hodling. You really need to have an emergency fund and their is no need to keep it in bitcoin.  Let your emergency fund be for emergency and it must not be in bitcoin.  Focus on your bitcoin hodling and dont try to be too smart if not you may end up making mistakes not doing the right thing.

This is laughable and a misleading advice the same time because by doing so, you are gambling with your emergency funds, thinking you are playing smart, but you don't know that if emergency comes and the value of Bitcoin is down, you may be at a disadvantage position which may cost you your investment, so it is not a good idea to keep your emergency funds in an asset like Bitcoin that is very volatile.

Keeping it in fiat for easy access is the best, some in the bank and some in cach, so that even though your bank lock you out that particular moment, you would not be stranded.

That was when I suggested that, he should rather hold whatever money he earns in bitcoin but it should be treated as an emergency fund and not his savings or investments which means that, whenever there is an emergency, he can withdraw without guilt and the reason for this is that, you'll agree with me that if maybe, we plan our emergency funds per weekly and maybe you set aside $50 for weekly emergencies, you would agree with me that, if one leaves a peaceful life, there might not be any emergency for a whole week and for such weeks when there are no demand for the Fund and for such weeks, the money might then be counted as his investment.
When you build an emergency fund with Bitcoin, you will have to face some uncertainties.

I assume that you need $500 for an emergency. You may have calculated that amount and put it in Bitcoin. But when your emergency situation arises, the market price is significantly lower, so selling your Bitcoin may not be enough to get the necessary money. Then you will have to raise money from other sources, or sell a larger part of your investment. Which will ruin your long-term plan. Even if it were logical to keep the emergency fund in Bitcoin, there would be no need to keep a separate fund called an emergency fund.

Again, it is unreasonable to consider the money saved for that week as investment money just because there was no emergency in a week. Just because there was no danger, there is no guarantee that the money will not be needed in the future.

I agree with you no doubts but I think we should go back to the context for why I suggested saving our emergency funds in bitcoin.

The initial discussion was about a newbie who is trying to start a journey in the bitcoin market and doesn't have a start up capital and also doesn't have any set funds set aside for emergency and the question was that, should the newbie try to build his emergency funds or go straight into investing in bitcoin considering the fact that, the economy is a harsh one and one of the best investment strategy is the DCA technique

This is a wrong suggestion I must say. There is no reason that you may give that will make it seem right that you are suggesting that a newbie investor should keep his emergency funds in Bitcoin, and when emergencies come, he can sell and use it. I feel it's a total wrong one.

Emergency funds are for safety nets which protects your investment. That is, you use it immediately to handle emergency situations that may happen at anytime, since we don't always know when it will happen, but certainly, they must surely come. So the emergency funds must be available and possibly in fiat and easily accessible, and not something that should be in Bitcoin and then requiring you to sell before accessing it.

How does it even sound? Selling Bitcoin to protect Bitcoin. It doesn't make sense. Emergency funds shouldn't be kept in Bitcoin.

It's a total mistake from some investors that tend to get somewhat too aggressive sometimes and forget to meet up with all necessary needs before begining to buy Bitcoin. Some also out of ignorance put too much into back up funds while neglecting basic needs. It's always basic needs first, and then, from your discretionary income, you can comfortably handle your buying, building back up funds and also take care of your discretionary spending.

Anyone who understand how bitcoin works or how volatile bitcoin is will not even think about putting his emergency funds in bitcoin.

I don’t understand why someone with the full knowledge of bitcoin volatile nature will think about putting his emergency funds in bitcoin.
Emergency can happen at any time and since emergency can help at any time, it is very wrong for you to even think about putting your emergency funds on bitcoin.

Some people may be expecting to increase there emergency funds through bitcoin but they forget it’s a 50/50 chance, you may be expecting it to increase and it ends up decreasing, so just put it in fiat currency.

I’m not arguing that you can’t save your emergency funds in bitcoin, because one can actually decide to scatter their emergency funds across different savings or assets but what is most important is that it should be easily accessible and available when needed for emergency situations. But you don’t have to start saving emergency funds in the form of bitcoin when you’re yet to start up your main bitcoin investment. And if you’re saying that the reason for saving the emergency funds In bitcoin is for the investor to be at a safer side then it’s a misleading statement because bitcoin is highly volatile and there’s no guarantee that the amount won’t lose value especially during a period of heavy market crash, So there’s also a risk of loss.

We all are humans, so we could very well make mistakes or communicate our ideas wrongly...That's why it's best you Just take to correction and stop trying to prove/or justify a point that is already faulty....Fyi, under no circumstances is it ever right for an investor to save his emergency funds in Bitcoin..The very reason for emergency funds is so as to have money that is readily available whenever an unexpected occurrence pops up, and Bitcoin's volatility simply make Bitcoin an unsuitable place for money you could be needing unexpectedly or in a short notice...

Just imagine you invested $50 into Bitcoin as your emergency funds simply because you had no immediate use for that money...And the following week an emergency arises, and by then the price of Bitcoin had dipped below your actual buying price, you will be left with no choice other than to sell at a loss just so you could attend to that pressing need...

You also have to understand that DCA isn't necessarily about just putting every available amount of money in Bitcoin...The best way to DCA is to do so with your discretionary income...And if newbies can figure out their discretionary income then he can very well kickstart their accumulation journey without having to be held back by the absence of emergency funds since emergency funds can very well be  built alongside one's investment as they go..

Self-Custody is a right. Say no to "non-custodial"

, talking about disposable income you should refer to it as a discretionary income for better understanding.
Disposable income is totally different from a discretionary income, so I wonder why he is calling discretionary income as a disposable income.

For a better understanding, disposable income is the amount of money left after finish paying up your tax, while a discretionary income is the amount of money that is left after all your basic needs have been met, so they are totally different from each other, so I just wonder where he got that from, by using the word disposable income instead of a discretionary income, because that can be misleading to newbies investors that cannot differentiate the difference between them.

For all intents and purposes (especially regarding this thread), disposable income and discretionary income are the same thing.

[edited out]
When we hear the word emergency, we have a sense of urgency and if it comes to an emergency fund, we may need it at any time. It is not certain when the need will arise, so it would be more reasonable for you to keep this fund in fiat.
If I imagine another alternative, if someone keeps a fund equivalent to 3 months of family expenses as an emergency, it would be better to keep that fund in fiat and if it is a larger emergency fund, such as a fund equivalent to 6 months or 1 year of family expenses, then in my opinion it may be logical to keep it in Bitcoin form (3 months of family expenses must be in cash as an emergency fund).

It does not tend to be reasonable to keep much beyond 3 months as back up funds, unless you have special circumstances that you know that you are losing income or going to incur extra expense, unless maybe you already built up your bitcoin and/or other investments.

So the gist of what I am saying is that keeping an emergency fund in fiat form is more reasonable, but if someone wants to keep an additional amount of funds (for more than 6 months of family expenses) as an emergency then that could also be reasonable.

You seem a bit lost @Olatundespo, and perhaps you believe that you are in the cash building (loving) thread, when you are not, and you are misleading guys when you are blanketly proclaiming that it may be reasonable to keep large amounts of cash or back up funds.

Even if you go beyond 3 months of cash that might be unreasonable, especially for guys who do not have much if any bitcoin.  Have you ever thought about why repeatedly in this thread, we talk about building bitcoin and back up funds at the same time?  There is priority and preference to bitcoin investing, and even though guys can prioritize how they like, it seems a bit retarded to be overly prioritizing cash rather than making sure to be prioritizing bitcoin.

Let's say for example that a guy came to bitcoin and he had absolutely no bitcoin, but he had 3 months of cash (to cover expenses), it may well be the most prudent and wise thing for the guy to split his 3 months of cash in half to put it in bitcoin and then to build both the bitcoin and the back up funds from that point.

This thread is about bitcoin investing and not building up cash and never getting anywhere (having fun staying poor).

For the purpose of this thread, try to think about building bitcoin and being practical about cash.  If you are overly obsessed with building up cash, then you probably don't understand bitcoin.

[edited out]
This is a good example and investors should understand the diversity of making the emergency fund available in both cash and digital like in the bank or in form of digital currency. Once the purpose can be easily fulfilled that will not be a problem again.
Also you can decided to build your emergency funds uot o 6 months coverage so incase you lose your source of income.

In this thread, we talk about building back up funds (aka emergency funds) up to 3 months of expenses, yet we also talk about building up bitcoin simultaneously.

It hardly makes any sense to even try to build up back up funds to 6 months, unless already having a lot of bitcoin (perhaps a couple of years of bitcoin to cover a couple of years of expenses).

Guys have to make their choices about how to manage their cash and even how to grow bitcoin versus strengthening cashflows (including back ups), yet it seems retarded that guys continue to cite 6 months of back ups as if it were even a normal (or typical) situation.. when it is not, and I would suggest that guys who are focusing on getting 6 months of cash likely do not understand bitcoin, unless they understand that 6 months of cash mostly only makes sense if they already have a lot of bitcoin, such as 1-2 years or more of it.

1) Self-Custody is a right.  Resist being labelled as: "non-custodial" or "un-hosted."  2) ESG, KYC & AML are attack-vectors on Bitcoin to be avoided or minimized.  3) How much alt (shit)coin diversification is necessary? if you are into Bitcoin, then 0%......if you cannot control your gambling, then perhaps limit your alt(shit)coin exposure to less than 10% of your bitcoin size...Put BTC here: bc1q49wt0ddnj07wzzp6z7affw9ven7fztyhevqu9k

It's clearly impossible for them to prioritize anything other than basic needs, because basic needs cannot be postponed. Even if we are investors with considerable wealth, it's certainly a mistake to not fulfill basic needs because basic needs are necessities that cannot be postponed until tomorrow.

After understanding what you said, I completely agree with your ideas on this matter. You also immediately pointed out the mistake they make if they ignore basic needs and choose to buy Bitcoin over basic needs. I think your answer is correct no matter how great we are, when times of need come we will certainly be less likely to take action if they haven't been met. For another reason after all the basic needs are fulfilled, I think it will be easier for us to collect or do anything for our activities whether it is buying aggressively which costs us a lot of money, of course there will be no problem anymore in fact we do more with a sense of comfort without thinking about other things and the results will clearly be more optimal to become our future assets.

Some people may be expecting to increase there emergency funds through bitcoin but they forget it’s a 50/50 chance, you may be expecting it to increase and it ends up decreasing, so just put it in fiat currency.
This is exactly what greed does to people, even though they may know that investing their emergency fund in bitcoin put them at a disadvantage if the price of bitcoin falls when an emergency hits , but their greed won't allow them. If an emergency hit when bitcoin price is decreasing, the value of that emergency fund may likely not be adequate to cover for that urgent need at that moment and you may even have to sell the whole of your investment to covered for that need. Emergency fund should instead be saved in stable coin while a portion of it should be save in the bank and in cash for quick access just incase the bank delays your withdrawal, you can rely on the other available options to avoid being stranded or frustrated.

Why does a person create an emergency fund? Of course, to deal with emergency situations. When a person feels the need to create an emergency fund, I don't think he will later intend to use the Uttara Fund for anything other than emergency work.
Investing in Bitcoin is not a greed, it is a necessity, but you need to make sure that you are walking on the right path to reach the goal for which you are investing in Bitcoin. When a person feels that the amount of money that he needs to deal with an emergency in his life has already been accumulated, he can reduce the amount of money in the emergency fund and create a separate fund and name it "fund to buy in DIP". Yes, this can be a very effective way to grow the investment portfolio, but I would not advise any investor to invest using the emergency fund even if the price drops.
There is a saying that it is harder to maintain freedom than to achieve it. Yes, since you are holding Bitcoin, if you want to take the Bitcoin to a certain price, you may need to wait a long time, so you have to ensure that you do not have to sell your Bitcoin portfolio at that time. That is why people say to create an emergency fund so that if an emergency arises, you do not need to sell your Bitcoin fund.

I agree that market volatility should not be used as a reason to have a part of your emergency fund invested in Bitcoin. But, the stablecoins are not entirely risk-free either, as they pose issuer, depegging and access risks. Some cash or bank account is there to help if an emergency occurs. Ideally, you should be investing funds that you can afford to let sit for years and not use next month, when investing in Bitcoin. The true advantage of an emergency fund is not only that it pays for unforeseen expenses but it will also save you from having to sell off your bitcoin in a bear market.

I have said it before that, for someone who doesn't even have an emergency funds and wants to go into the industry, instead of wanting to wait to get an emergency fund gathered, I would rather prefer that you save your emergency funds in bitcoin so you can be on a safer side.
I don’t like this your approach, emergency funds should be saved in fiat. My reason is that bitcoin in volatile in nature, what happens when your bitcoin is down for a prolonged period and emergency came up? You will observe that the amount you have kept for any emergency have declined because you kept it in bitcoin and it will affect you. Emergency money should be stored in fiat possibly stablecoin, so that the amount you kept for emergency won’t be affected even if bitcoin dips for a longer period of time.

The primary reason for having an emergency fund is its immediate usage in case of emergencies rather than trying to make money out of it. It would be highly foolish to have an emergency fund in Bitcoin since in the case of a emergency, the market will fall, and half of your savings will vanish into thin air.

Secondly you talked about the stablecoin that was not volatile than Bitcoin but still was not totally safe. There were cases of de pegging and even freezing of exchange account in the past. In addition, it takes a lot of effort and time to liquidate cryptocurrencies in order to pay a emergency or hospital bill in the middle of the night.

So in my view, the whole emergency fund should be held in easy accessible fiat money. One should keep a portion of it in the bank and some in cash form. Bitcoin is very suitable for investing for the long term but not tomorrow's emergency.

A lot of people don't take the emergency funds serious and that's one things that's supposed to be taken very serious because without it, there are always high possibilities of investors touching their investment but in situations where the investor has a very good budget for their emergency funds, there wouldn't be any reason for the investor to touch their investment and that's will make such an investor hold their coin for a much more longer time.

I have said it before that, for someone who doesn't even have an emergency funds and wants to go into the industry, instead of wanting to wait to get an emergency fund gathered, I would rather prefer that you save your emergency funds in bitcoin so you can be on a safer side.

What do you actually mean by being on a safer side? Are you trying to suggest that saving emergency funds In bitcoin is better than saving it in fiat where it can be easily accessible and available for use when you need it , does it mean that there will be no risk of loss when saving emergency funds in bitcoin?. As far as I’m concerned, bitcoin is volatile and keeping emergency funds in bitcoin still doesn’t make it safer because of the high volatility issue which means that you can experience some loss during periods of market crash and there by reducing your emergency funds savings which may not be enough to sort out your emergency situations when they occur at such period of heavy market crash. To be at a more safer side it will be better to avoid savings it in a highly speculative asset like bitcoin that’s very volatile. The main reason for keeping the emergency funds is to use it for sorting emergency situations only and not attempting to make profit from it.

I think it will be easier for us to collect or do anything for our activities whether it is buying aggressively which costs us a lot of money,
Buying aggressively doesn't need to cost a lot of money, you can buy aggressively even from a small discretionary income as long as you put a larger share of your discretionary income into buying bitcoin.
For example, if investor A has $100 discretionary income and he puts $70 into bitcoin, and investor B has $1000 discretionary income and puts only $400 into bitcoin. Investor A is buying more aggressively than investor B even though investor B is using bigger amounts. This is because investor A puts 70% of his discretionary income into buying bitcoin and investor B puts only 40%.

We should also not invest aggressively and forget to build emergency fund alongside buying bitcoin unless we already had emergency fund before getting into bitcoin.
If an investor gets into bitcoin without any emergency fund, he should give his emergency fund a good priority, but not more priority than his bitcoin investment. He can do 40:40:20 which is 40% into buying bitcoin, 40% in building emergency fund and the remaining 20% for discretionary needs.

You are right. Emergency funds should always be kept in fiat currency because you never know when you will need the funds in an emergency. Emergency funds should be kept in cash. What happens when the value of Bitcoin decreases? You will be forced to sell the emergency funds that you converted into Bitcoin at that time at a loss but you are accumulation Bitcoin for future profit. What will happen to you in an emergency situation when there is a natural disaster and the internet and electricity in your area are disconnected? Even if you keep it in stablecoin, you will not be able to find the money in such an emergency. The main thing is that your goal is to easily accumulate Bitcoin and hold Bitcoin. You have to be careful with this Bitcoin holding and not withdraw Bitcoin before reaching the goal.
