Why do you say cats damage furniture? You can clip their nails, if you don't know how you can ask a vet to do it. Smiley

A cat without claws is like Bitcoin without SHA256.

Just don't let it go near your furniture, problem solved.

He has claws, just the tips are cut so they aren't sharp. This way you don't get scratched when playing with your cat.

Why not just remove the claws?

Clipping the claws only makes the cat sharpen them more. You create a bigger problem.

Yes cats are amazing at getting rid of rodents.  Warning, street cats will leave a beheaded mouse on the floor and you might pick it up thinking it is a piece of porkchop.

I think claw removal/clipping is really cruel. You basically rob a cat of its ability to climb, hunt, defend itself, etc. You know, stuff cats do.

If you want a cat but don't want your furniture destroyed, there are other options like getting a scratching post, not allowing your cat to go indoors or in certain rooms, or simply not getting a cat at all.

My cat was declawed, and I worked with someone who strongly believed what you just said.
My younger cat has claws.

Indoor cats have no problem with having their claws removed when its done early on. Of course, this should not be done to a cat that visits the outside world.

As far as training a cat to use a scratching post or anything else other than a shitbox --- good luck. Unless you can devote days of constant attention you will lose.

I really don't think house cats are ever domesticated or very trainable. They do show affection and love when it suits them.  They, simply, tolerate us.

Cats are very useful. They eat mice, turn them into shit, and bury it in the neighbours' back yard.

Sometimes a good way is combination of cat and dog Smiley I had those a few years ago and they seem to really like each other Smiley a lot of fun too Cheesy but some of the dogs hate cats as we know

Cats are not to eat rats, it just put the mouse as a plaything, usually play dead.

Some cats will eat a whole mouse, mine does an amazing bloodless kill and then plays with it.

True. I'll address 2 points mentioned before.
1. Cats with clipped nails can't climb.
There are breeds that don't climb, like the British shorthair.
2. They won't be able to defend themselves.
He still can bite or run away, but why would he need to defend himself in the first place?

And it's not cruel, people castrate animals all the time (with dogs it's even recommended) and you say cutting the nails is cruel?

+1

Declawing will make me label you as an asshole, they actually need claws to do stuff, what happens if you die or they have to survive on their own for awhile? You've just made it extremely difficult for them to get any food, the reason they scratch is because they're doing the equivalent of clipping nails so they don't get too long, you could either get a scratching post for them to use or if it really bothers you that much don't get a cat at all.

Yeah if you've got furniture you don't want it near you could just keep it in an area where the scratching won't have any affect and just let it go outside to do that, as for the shitbox, my cats are awesome and go outside to take a dump, then they bury it themselves without any input from me whatsoever Wink

Other than having narcissistic image of themselves plastered all over the net.... Undecided

Are we just a free meal ticket for house cats? I'd imagine lions and tigers would ripped them to shreds for being slackers....

How is it house cats manage to convince everyone they're smart when they're so hard to train.

Aren't house cats taking advantage of persons suffering from emotional instability?  Huh

depend on what do you want the cat do?

If you want the cat catch mouse

yes, house cats can do that

People who want to "train" cats or think they need to be "useful" of some kind - have no clue whatsoever what a cat really is.

To those I say :
Whatever you do, stick with an obidient dog that you manually have to take out to take a shit or piss 3x a day, in every weather. That's an animal you can train to perform tasks useful to you - and most importantly it has far lower human quality/intelligence standards requirements than a cat.
Dogs settle for very little and that's okay. Cats don't do that.
