You can go one further and actually send newbies to jail for an extended period, where they only have access to a device which can only access the forum without the post option.

We pick up anyone who attempts to join the forum like, blind fold them and bring them to out secret base; No, I'm not copying squid game, that's the plot for every other thriller movie.
If they fall to pass the IQ test, well, we could actually copy squid game then.

Newbie jail will never be brought back. The merit system does a good job of preventing the spammers from posting too much crap and the newbie jail was too high of a barrier for new users.

In a real world we never put a new person in jail. Only the one who is relatively old and used to the system goes to jail for violating the terms and conditions.
The same rule is being followed after the merit system is introducted and now there is no need for a newbie jail.

I think the Merit system is restrictive enough to noobs. I mean how tough is it to earn 1000 Merit now? I almkst feel sorry for them, almost. I wouldn’t be against bringing back noob jail though.

Limiting newbie participation is very harmful for a community. Newbie jail will never return: I consider the newbie-jail period to have been extremely damaging to the forum. When barriers to participation are too high, then the best people often just won't go to the trouble of joining, and the people who are willing to jump through the hoops are often people who aren't good for the community: people with nothing better to do, scammers, get-rick-quickers, etc. Having a permanent newbie jail policy would improve things a lot in the short-term, but would end up being a fatal poison to the community.

If you propose to make this forum stricter than before, I'd the opposite. Not all people know basic rules of forum and they treat it same as social media e.g. Facebook, Instagram etc where you can copy paste anything and Mark wouldn't ban you for doing that. Though most of newbie is shitposter and plagiarist, but it doesn't mean they wouldn't learn from his mistakes. Perhaps few plagiarist has been permanently banned are actually have 200+ IQ.

There are only about 0.0% of newbie who manage to get 100+ merit before becoming a Jr member while others take months or years to get 100+ merit and increase their rank. The merit system is more effective and I believe it has prevented thousands of spammers from ranking up or getting merit. No more rookie prison, the forum's user base has been decreasing day by day even though the number of registered profiles has grown by more than 3,4 million today.

Generally I don't listen to suggestions from borderline retards, but in this case I think it would be a superlative idea.  Unfortunately it would be about 4 years too late to implement such restrictions, because the worst of the shitposting, spamming, newbie infestation, account farming, and all the other woes bitcointalk has seen were mitigated by the merit system.  

But if it were up to me, I'd keep newbies in jail until they either starved to death and we could hang their skeletons from the home page or they proved their usefulness to the community via a combination of IQ testing, forced sterilization, eugenics, earned merits, and probably some other vicious methods I can't think of right now because of my blood alcohol level.  

And no, I don't remember newbie jail, but I've heard tell of it from members more experienced than me.  I do remember the old scammer tag from my lurking days, and I would also bring that back.  If anyone would like to join me in a forum coup, hit me up via PM.

Hear, hear.  I see, belatedly, that you beat me to the mentioning of it.  I'm sure most noobs don't realize how different the forum was in the early days.  Can you see all of that through the Wayback Machine or some other method?

The newbie jail was something that might no longer be considered now especially after the merit system was introduced. I just don't think that newbie jail would be good advice at this point because they no longer want to stop good newbies from getting a chance to join this community. There's nothing wrong with wanting to remember it, but it's a thing of the past that may not really be needed right now. The merit system is enough to prevent them from achieving high rankings especially if they are spammers.

We really got to have some fun with April Fools this time. It was quite helpful remembering something strange in the past.

Thanks for this simple but yet helpful information, many of us don't actually know what the so talked about "newbie jail" was until now.

And from the description on the quoted text above, I personally think that bringing that back will be really harsh on the newbies having in mind that the introduction of the merit system already does a great job in limiting spammers from ever leaving the newbie rank to advance to the next.
Also, introducing or bringing back the newbie jail will not only put the newbies to jail but also in the long term, put the growth of the forum to jail too, as this will ultimately deter or discourage new members from joining the forum, and some of this new members potentially can be the great posters the forum needs.
So, I personally advice against bringing the newbie jail back.

iirc a person needed like five posts in newbie jail before posting elsewhere in the forum. cant remember if mods had to approve them or not.

There was actually a section that newbies were only allowed to post in and I understand that it was full of trash. Users could get whitelisted or they could wait until they met a criteria to be able to post in the main subs.

Imagine what are the chances for a legitimate user who is actually wanted to get into the forum and trying to give some contribution with such feature so called jail but thank God its not really needed just give the time for them to understand the system if we don't let them to post we can't get what an actual noob wants to know and obviously the merit system is more than enough to clear the spammers.
