Heya! I'm aware that this question has been asked many times before. Still, I'd need some feedback from others to see if I'm making the right decision in purchasing a 0.91-inch OLED screen[1] to replace my Ledger Nano S, which had faded significantly after 1.5 years of use.

I'm also aware that Ledger developed a countermeasure for the display vulnerability[2] discovered in their old firmware, which they claimed was non-critical, but I still want to make sure that what I'm trying to do is practical and completely safe.

If the device is about 1.5 years old then it is still under warranty, and accordingly, you could ask for a replacement. I know someone on the forum had a problem with the screen and that that device was replaced for free.

All Ledger devices (Ledger Nano S and Nano X devices) and Cryptosteel Capsules are covered by a 2-year warranty.
If you're experiencing issues with your product, please reach out to our support team for help.
In case your product might need to be replaced, please prepare a copy of the product invoice in advance.

As for replacing the screen, if you are skilled enough to do so, I do not see what the vulnerability of such a procedure would be, or I do not know if such a screen can be modified in any way to be malicious. I know there are malicious USB cables to watch out for, and I guess everything is subject to some malicious modification.

Does that mean I need to hard reset the hardware wallet before I surrender the Ledger to them? Or they will just send a new unit without them receiving the faulty product?

If a warranty replacement isn't possible, I'll replace it myself. Judging on some of the YouTube videos, I think replacing an OLED screen is something that I can do? Maybe? as long as you take care not to damage the entire circuit while removing it. And I guess I can keep up with that.

AFAIK, there's no vulnerability in replacing the screen, but you should try and see if "this trick [credit goes to @dkbit98]" works first.

but I still want to make sure that what I'm trying to do is practical and completely safe.
If you have access to proper prying tools, go ahead and do it by yourself + Nano S will be "discontinued" in a few months, so make sure to get a few of those [if you end up ordering a display from a third-party].

I wrote before about replacement display for ledger nono S and I posted confirmed links with exact compatible versions with images.
If you already have ledger with bad dim on display you can order new cheap display from Alibaba online or locally and replace it yourself following this video instructions.
Make sure you are purchasing this display with 12 PIN connector, or alternative option is to use smartphone cameras to see characters on your old display.
Note that I will repeat what SFR10 said about nono S that stopped production, and there will be no more support for them, like they did for all their old devices.

Of course, the only correct way is to reset the device to factory defaults in case you send it for repair. I found the case I mentioned in the previous post, and the user had a broken device replaced with a new one even before he sent the old one to Ledger. Still keep in mind that it was in 2019, but I still think it's worth trying to get a replacement rather than changing the screen - try to report a problem with pictures or even video, you have nothing to lose but some time.

Have you tried contacting Ledger support (they don't seem to have a problem with that) first, describing your problem and waiting for instructions from them? Perhaps just from them you can get specific answers to your questions about the return and exchange of a broken device.

After I wrote to the support, I would first move the entire contents of the device to another wallet /wallets (for greater reliability), and then reset the HW to factory settings.

In parallel, I would also order a few OLED screens from the links above in reserve, fortunately, they are not at all expensive. Even if screens not needed this time (now you are personally familiar with Ledger devices problems), it may come in handy in the future and OLED screens will already be at hand.

That is, you can prepare for possible scenario 1 (return and replacement of Nano S) and scenario 2 (changing OLED screen) by taking the necessary steps to do so. Both do not require superhuman efforts or actions, including financial costs. So go ahead Maus0728.

Note that I will repeat what SFR10 said about nono S that stopped production, and there will be no more support for them, like they did for all their old devices.
Despite this, I would still try to replace the broken device under warranty, while there is still time and opportunity for this.

Thanks for all the advise!

I just finished contacting Ledger's Live Support through their website, explaining that I am having hardware issues, and I received my case number through email. For now, I just hope that the replacement will go off without a hitch. Never expect that I will be experiencing this kind of issue in the first place  Sad

That's a good thing. When you interacted with their customer service department, I assume they asked for screenshots or videos as proof that the hardware wallet is faulty. Did they?

How long did it take them to reply to your first email?
Did you have to provide them with your order number while describing your problem?
Don't they have a live chat feature now? You still received an email, but I thought their service personnel communicate via the chat now.

I'm glad they're no longer requiring their users to return faulty devices [e.g. this case], but the main issue is how are they going to ship it to your location: UNAVAILABLE COUNTRIES
- IIRC, since Q2 of last year, they haven't shipped anything to the PH.

Why are you surprised if I showed you an example in which one member of the forum also got a replacement in the same way? Personally, I was more surprised that you want to repair a device that is under warranty, but considering what @SFR10 wrote, if you are in one of the banned countries, you will have a problem with delivery.

A possible solution is to send the new device to someone who is not in the banned country (friend, relative), and then they send it to your address.

Don't throw away old device in garbage.
Now you should start praying that new device wont have any issues when it arrives, and you should still keep old device for spare parts in future.
All plastic parts are buttons are made from cheap materials and I saw people complaining about quality, so you will probably need them, and maybe you can even some other parts.
One more positive thing is that you will have extra usb cable and papers for seed phrase backup.

I'm glad they're no longer requiring their users to return faulty devices [e.g. this case], but the main issue is how are they going to ship it to your location: UNAVAILABLE COUNTRIES
- IIRC, since Q2 of last year, they haven't shipped anything to the PH.
That is a new twist, but how did he ordered his device in the first place?
Maybe he has a friend or family in other countries who can receive it first and send him this new device.

I was expecting Ledger would require me to send back the faulty device in return for a brand new product, but they have instead written me an email stating that they will send me a new one without requiring me to return the faulty one! To be honest, I'm quite surprised!
If the situation has developed in this way, Maus0728 can try to replace the OLED screen on broken HW, as he originally asked at the beginning of this topic. Order a screen and try to restore this device. At the same time, Maus0728 will gain experience in repairing Ledger Nano S, which I am sure will be a must-have for owners of this HWs.  Wink

In any case, he doesn't lose anything, but on the contrary, can gain useful experience. If it fails to fix defective device, then it will be possible to use it as spare parts for the future, as dkbit98 suggests.

One more positive thing is that you will have extra usb cable and papers for seed phrase backup.
Oh yeah. Only for the sake of usb cable and papers was it worth contacting Ledger's products.  Grin "/sarcasm off".

From this story, I have a double impression: Ledger seems to have defects with its products, but their quality of servicing their support deserves respect.

This must be due to the fact that the list of Unavailable-Countries changes and is supplemented from time to time. Although for me personally it is strange and incomprehensible, why should they limit their sales markets.

Maybe he has a friend or family in other countries who can receive it first and send him this new device.
Another life hack for interacting with the devices of this company. Ledger could not create such obstacles for its users.

As @m2017 mentioned previously, this was not always the case and the same thing applies to "Trezor products" as well, but having said that, none of their official resellers [in PH] seem to be affected by these changes [there must be a way to ship to the PH, but perhaps they don't want to go through the trouble of dealing with certain issues, for just individual orders]!

Ledger was able to deliver the product in the Philippines before covid19 spread across the country, and the government imposed a nationwide lockdown. However, I recall that when the device arrived in the customs, there was a one-week delay before DHL (courier) contacted me to receive it for delivery somewhere other than my home address.

As of now, I am waiting for the support to reply from the shipping address I provided to verify if they truly acknowledge the replacement, especially now that I am anticipating a delay due to the restriction.

Update!

I finally received the Ledger Nono S replacement after almost 3 weeks of waiting.

Upon checking, as usual, the box container is sealed using a thin plastic but the contents are now a bit different as compared to the previous package I received from them less than 2 years ago. I also checked the latest packaging on their website to verify that the product is genuine. There is also a video about their new packaging on their website, if you prefer watching.

The package of a Ledger Nano S should include:

Quote
A Ledger Nano S
Micro USB cable
Get started leaflet
3 Recovery sheet
Accessories: Keychain, Lanyard
Packaging: Ledger-branded cardboard box

Link to source

As we all know, there is a customs restriction in delivering their products to the Philippines and to other countries as well, but I assume this is not the case given their response thru email and the fast delivery. Also, I still didn't tested the new HW yet, maybe by tomorrow or the day after I finished most of my important task in school.  Overall, I am impressed with Ledger's support in attending to my queries. Thanks, everyone. I might also replace the OLED screen of the old ledger, maybe after some time.

Glad for you that everything went well, you got a new working device. 3 weeks is not such a long period and it was worth the wait to get this HW.

Did you choose the transparent case of the device yourself (was it possible to choose the color of nono s?) or did the company send it in such a case on its own initiative?

Will await the results of a detailed experiment on replacing the display on an old nano s. As far as I remember, no one has published a detailed guide on this topic here yet. Unfortunately, this may be in demand due to frequent device display failures, as many ledger users complain about this.

I'm a bit surprised they were able to quickly send a replacement unit to you [I'm happy for you], but am I correct in assuming that you included your first Nano S by mistake or they just sent you one of their previous packages that had their old logo?

As we all know, there is a customs restriction in delivering their products to the Philippines and to other countries as well, but I assume this is not the case given their response thru email and the fast delivery.
Did Ledger provide any other details [apart from the SS] as to why normally, Filipinos can no longer order directly but they can still ship replacement units to the Philippines?
