I was spending some time with my friends parents and there was not only a huge party but all of them placed p2p bets on the horse racing. They asked me to come over as well, the ending was deeply sad and essential to cover : The horse died after winning of a heart attack.

The horse was presenting signs of heart attack on the camera but no one was actually even giving it a second thought and at the end when it was the last lap, all the horses got whipped excessively hard as well. That gets me to my point "why do you support horse racing?" This is honestly far to cruel to continue.

According the this site: https://www.horsedeathwatch.com/background.php they have seen more than 2000 deaths in around 5500 days. Most of the horses die during the match as well, they also have instances where they are exploited using drugs (doping).

Are you aware that most of the horses go through slaughter as well? Some of them have very bad injuries making them not even the least bit useful for the business therefore they are killed without second thought. I do hope people would get more aware and try and steer away from *horse racing*.

It seems that like many things in life, horse racing can be done in a bad way or a good way. Horses have been ridden for many thousands of years and there is nothing to say that they are always mistreated. I think all coercive methods like whipping or kicking should be taken out when trying to make a horse ride faster, after that - why should we not allow horses to compete for speed. Even athletes can over do it when it comes to training or pushing the human body, to the point where their heart muscle becomes so powerful it is too much. More research should definitely be done into the topic and if appropriate the laws should be improved on their welfare, but banning it outright may be unnecessary.

Yes, that is right. Maybe not banned but gradually reduced so that people who are used to betting on horse racing can understand why. I think if they are also well informed of the reasons and the government can take a good approach, those people will surely understand.

There is no way we can ban it since it widely watched and popular among gambling community also. With so much animal abuse already going on in the world, I don't think someone will pay any attention to horse abuse. Similar type of things going on in Spain with bulls for centuries. 

This is what I mean from the hereditary tradition in the previous thread because apart from sports and gambling, things like this have become a tradition in some areas, so it is very difficult to stop it.

I know this is some kind of cruelty, but this is a really long-running sport and I know a lot of NGOs are campaigning to ban this, but it still failed. This is also like the cockfighting where all of the roosters that are lost usually die, or if not, they will be killed in the end because of the injuries. I believed that was already taking place since horse racing in some countries, like here, is fully regulated. It's just that maybe some cases aren't reported to the authorities that's why no actions were done.

And about that abuse, I can't think of a way why these people will abuse their horses where in fact they spending big money to make these horses conditioned in the match. There are inspectors before they will allow a horse to race and if those horses didn't reach the criteria, they won't allow being raced.

May I know the specific "abuse" you are referring to here? I just realized that it doesn't make sense to abuse these horses providing they need to take care of properly in order to be fit for racing. How will the owner make money for their horses if they are abused? I also don't see horses being forced to race since it's a risky move for the owners. It's a gamble.

But if it's about betting then everyone who has money will be interested in betting on horse racing too, but if it's only about who athletes can be jockeys in horse racing then I'm sure they are rich people. Anyway, every sport has its own risks, but as long as they have good care then I think animals and/or humans who exercise will be good too. So, in sports betting it's basically not only about animals, because there are also humans who compete directly physically like MMA for example which I think is an extreme sport or tournament that is very prone to getting serious injuries.

It seems that most people here are against the animal cruelty in horse racing, that's a good thing. I am still struggling to understand what the average gambler on horse racing is like. On the weekend I asked some friends and nobody knows anybody who enjoys that sport. It must be a limited target group I guess. In an article I read that almost exclusively older men are gambling on horses. It could also be a cultural thing. Something else I noticed is that we still have Polo teams in my city. Never been to match either or watched on TV but I sometimes see the fields being prepared for a match. Now I am wondering if Polo could also be cruel towards horses. Are horses being hurt when playing Polo? I know that in Spain Polo is still very common and there is also quite a bit of money involved, it must be very competitive.

From my experience I can tell you that those who bet on horses usually bet much more than those who play football or tennis or other sports. Just because... there are many more races (UK IR USA South Africa special events etc etc) every day at any time, much more events with other sports. This led to place more bets, and it's a serious problem for people addicted to gambling.

This do really shows out some argumentation in between yes and no reason or choices which is actually on point with those kind of responses
towards cruel sports.It might sound not right then its still useless because if we do really look closely then its really that impossible for a

imagine the following:

if someone weighing 60 kg climbs on your body and you have to carry that person a few meters, let's say you carry that 60 kg person for a distance of 30 meters, would you be able to do this every day and hours? I don't think you could, so how would an animal like a horse not be too much of a strain on the animal by submitting such a person to it? The problem is that we are normalizing something cruel, athletes are not carrying weight, I would agree if horses just raced without them having to carry weight. but people don't want to do that, they want to enslave the animal in such an inhumane way and they are happy with that attitude
